Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)
Time

I doubt that the current pitch of voices on PAL video (VHS, Laserdisc, DVD) is incorrect. If you slow down the 25 fps to 24 fps none of the voices does sound natural any more. Leia sure doesn't sound like a woman any more!

I have heard star wars avi files of german audio run at 23,976 speed. It's unwatchable - actually unhearable!

I doubt that home video release in PAL don't feature the original pitch of voices. People would remember the difference frequencies of the actors between hearing them in cinemas and hearing them at home. This 4% are very easy detected, especially if you are familiar to the voice of the actors.

I think for the studios it's quite easy to create two seperate audio tracks because you have the audio track without the voices to begin with and just insert the actor voices at certain timestamps. The speed of the voice track however doesn't necessarely have to match the speed of the main track.

Blurays features the original 24fps but the pitch (frequency) of the voice actors don't change! If there was an international cinema release you can bet that the voice actor do sound on PAL DVD as they sound on Bluray.

I will reactivate my starwars hdd this week and hopefully find all the stuff 'krieg der sterne' related. If I remember right, I have kept all those captures of the crawls, at least from the vhs videos (I was never able to play my Laserdiscs).

I am looking forward in any attempt to recreate the german cinema experience.

@grisan: Please keep the laserdisc Logos at the beginning somehow included, if at least as a bonus feature or share it here like the 1982 LD release. Such things are part of german star wars history as well.

Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)
Time

Hi guys!

Well, I wasn't really lucky with LD-Players. Bought 2 of them via ebay, both stated in working condition, both of them not working after shipping. My motivation in buying a 3rd LD Player is like zero.

I have all the german Star Wars LD sets at home but can't play them.

The original German dub was archived on the German gout, now out of print as is the japan release and the USA release.

Too late to buy new copies.

The USA release is still easy enough to get through second hand sellers on Amazon.com, but unless you live in the UK getting the UK release is next to impossible, the same with wanting to own any other regions release or countries.

I have all three movie discs of the German GOUT. The audio however is not without errors (see thread history).

Seeing Star Wars in german is not only about having another audio track running, it's about having the german title crawl, german alien subtitles, and it even had german credits at the end.

Dunedain said:

It would be cool if a German Star Wars fan with the German GOUT DVD set would make the German Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack available, then the PAL audio speed up could be reversed and it could be synched to the U.S NTSC GOUT video.

That would be really interesting to watch, since the Empire is based on the German military. And the German Darth Vader is *awesome*, far superior voice. :)

If you reverse the PAL audio speed up you will get a slower (deeper) voice of everybody, which doesn't feature the original voice frequencies. Instead of seeing a NTSC version of German GOUT for NTSC countries who barely speak the language I would prefer a PAL version with at least the german text crawl reinserted.

Info & Offer: Does anybody still need any LD captured?
Time

I know the X9 is a NTSC only device but so far no one has released the original trilogy in any other languages than english. the german gout dvds for example suck.

the german audio track on it is missing stuff, and it's ac3 only. instead of the german title crawls that have been made and shown in the cinemas the gout dvds use the english title crawl and have the german translation as dvd subtitles. so weak.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

from the official site:
http://www.starwars.com/movies/saga/bluraymay4/index.html

"Fans will get an exclusive first look at some of the collection's extensive special features at this year's San Diego Comic-Con International -- which marks Lucasfilm's 35th anniversary as a Comic-Con presence. In 1976, the fledgling film company was looking for innovative, grass-roots ways to promote its underdog release, a film no one expected to succeed -- a space opera known (at the time) only as Star Wars. One of the first film companies to reach out directly to core audiences by way of fan conventions, Lucasfilm will return to the venue to showcase the full evolution of the epic story with a special first look at STAR WARS: THE COMPLETE SAGA ON BLU-RAY. We already know the truth. Lucas thinks one day everyone who saw the OOT will be dead and all that will be left are people who grew up with flashy CGI. He's pandering to children from the future.

If all people, who saw & appreciate the OOT, will be dead, he won't make any profit releasing his "holy grail" to the public. So my guess is there will be a release at some time because he is into the money!

Don't you find it interesting that the official site for US users gives specs of having 6.1 DTS Surround Sound and explicitely leaves out the fact that it might be DTS-HD, while the official site for german users gives specs of 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.

DTS Facebook now released the info that the US discs will feature DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1.

The THX Demo DVD featuring Star Wars Episode 1 Clips was mastered in 6.1 DTS Surround Sound already, so the audio master might be from that time of period or even older.

My summary this far:
'Everything will be revealed' can't be any more wrong. We basically know nothing about this release yet. I won't buy this set!

Imagine the following trailer:

For an entire generation people have experienced Star Wars the only way it has been possible, in the Special Edition.

But if you've only seen it this way, you haven't seen it at all!

Now after decades of wasted time in changing perfect movies.

See the Oscar winning original theatrical version.

With its original visual effects.

With its original Sound and Score.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

just a quick note:

40+ hours of bonus features minus 24 hours of audio commentaries gives us 16 hours remaining special features. the more detailed described disc 9 contains around 7 hours leaving 9 hours of special features.

this means disc 7 and disc 8 will contain around 9 hours of special features together.

---

i don't understand why lucasfilm can't get it right. they miss a really great opportunity. why release the movies without video commentaries or multi angles? i remember reading interviews in which GL talked about the need to wait for the advantages of the blu-ray technology - where he can show us the bluebox version, the preliminary animated version, the final version of each and every scene of the entire saga. it looks like after all this waiting we won't be getting this!

'dts 6.1 surround sound' is dvd niveau, high-def sound would be called 'DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1'. strange.

what i am expecting after seeing this spelling error on the doc-title is another rushed & pressured release. what such a release would really need is once more missing: love and passion for doing it well.

30 hours of Special Features in marketing language means the following thing:

6 movies a 2 hours, each with an audio-commentary, equals 12 hours of bonus features.

If they add another audio-commentary, another 12 hours is 'away'.

So in worst case: only 6 hours of footage besides audio stuff will be featured, spread over 3 BDs.

Btw: the official Blu-Ray Teaser is now avaiable in 720p:

Info Wanted: dvd.starwars.com archive (anyone archived it before it went down?)
Time

Hello there!

I have just posted the in Depth commentary of Episode I on a.b.starwars. I manually saved the content and change the html/css back then in order that it is playable without internet access and looks more pretty. You will need to install the dvd software provided on the disc.

Sadly, I didn't get the other text commentaries .

You can grab the commentary from rapidshare as well:

http://rapidshare.com/files/390123539/starwars_episode_1_dvd.starwars.com_official_text_commentary.zip.html">http://rapidshare.com/files/390123539/starwars_episode_1_dvd.starwars.com_official_text_commentary.zip.htmlhttp://rapidshare.com/files/390123539/starwars_episode_1_dvd.starwars.com_official_text_commentary.zip.html

The goal would be to create a dvd (blu-ray) subtitle track out of it.

You are welcome 'none'!

Well, there were several reasons to hold the release back at first place: Copyright Issues, no Usenet Account, bad Upload Speed. But somehow George seems to tolerate these releases in some way.

I will try to release Volume 2 until the end of the week. It contains another 60min of TV-Footage from that time area.

Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)
Time
Hello There!

As we all know by now, the GOUT DVDs do not feature a german title crawl.

I am using the gout videotrack, made it anamorph (avs script --> cce sp reencoding).

In the last week I was trying to merge my german title crawl with the gout videotrack of episode 4 and was very successful.

The crawl is from the VHS Silver Screen Collection, featuring the title crawl stretched to 720x576.

The results of filtering were astounding clear, you can download the latest video here:
http://rapidshare.de/files/35146630/deutsches_intro.mpg.html
(mpeg2-file, 16:9, ac3 2.0 german audio, 100 MB)

Please download it and post your commentaries/critics here.

Audio track from GOUT:
Episode 4 GOUT german audio sounds pretty filtered. Listen to the very first sentences of C-3PO ("Hast du das gehört?..."). Compare it to the Silverscreen VHS Audio and you will know what I mean:

GOUT DVD Sample:

(wav-file, 30sec, 700kbyte)

Silverscreen VHS 1990 Capture:

German ANH DVD OOT audio track: Entire part of dialogue missing in Chapter 13
Time
Here is another German Audio Bug, exclusive for GOUT Release. All other Releases don't have this bug.

Episode IV - ANH German Dub:
Missing word at 0:56:51/0:56:52. Luke normally says: "Mit dem Schutzvisier runter kann ich nicht mal sehen, geschweige denn kämpfen."

Now you only hear: "Mit dem Schutzvisier runter kann nicht mal sehen,..." The word 'ich' is missing. And the pause between the words kann/nicht seems to be cut to zero seconds. Sounds awful.

First Impressions of the OOT ...
Time
I'v just seen ANH GOUT PAL DVD on a friends setup. His dvd-standalone player is connected via YUV Component Out (Progressive Out) to his DLP Panasonic AE-9000 projector. We have a 2,4meter (over 7 feet) width screen wall.

At first it starts okay. We all know that the title crawl is not from the laserdisc master, so this scene is not represantative for what the movie is like in terms of quality. So we cut to the next scene...

Okay, the picture is dirty sometimes, but it's not only that, the most distracting (bad) is the shaking picture. It's not stable! Extremely irritating, and something like that brings you out of the movie.

To top that the noise is extremely visible on the big screen.

And I must say that I have never seen a movie more pixelized than this one on his setup. That brings you out of the movie, too.

Maybe some of those things are due to the NTSC2PAL Conversion they did for the PAL Release. I will try to get my hands on the NTSC GOUT as well. And I will do some tests via HDMI-connection to better use the native resolution of the dlp.

It was a bad cinema experience, really.

I've seen the SSE2004 DVD on the same setup. There are worlds between those two.

I am sure the X0-Project will do a far better job.
