Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)
Time

Did some quick queck with Media Player Classic yesterday. I have to agree with you. The Jedi Crawl looks like a SD upscale. Can't decide from this tool if its interlaced or not but avs scripts can deinterlace the picture if so. The crawl looks identical (quality-wise) to the GKAR Jedi Edition.

Nevertheless one of these two editions is the best quality of the original theatrical title. I am sure it will fit well to the darkJedi Blu Ray Project.

The HD .ts files all feature english end titles only.

Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)
Time

I checked my collection now. The original .TS files of the best HD Broadcasts feature the Krieg der Sterne Logo and german title crawl. Empire & Jedi seem identical to the Silverscreen VHS from 1990, and to the Widescreen VHS from 1993. I would need a frame 2 frame image comparison but it looks like we have two of the original theatrical crawls in superb quality!

Laserschwert, what makes you think, that the Jedi crawl is an SD-upscale? Can I verify this on my sources? Maybe I got something else here!? The .TS stream did look quite impressive on my 42" display.

I am preparing (doing rar files right now) my captures of the crawls for usenet-upload. Please be patient, as I haven't uploaded stuff in a long time and forgot how to do everything, have to reinstall the tools as well.

Some new videos posted on the star wars youtube channel with footage for all 3 of the OT but the footage is in German. Got to say that the cyan tint looks to have gone from Hoth

EPISODE 4

EPISODE 5

EPISODE 6

Does the fact that the German subtitles for Jabba's dialogue are white text in a black box mean we're finally getting burned-in subtitles that the other language options have to cover, or is that just how they like to do things over there?

The german 2004 DVDs feature the same subtitle style as the NTSC 2004 DVDs.

Releasing all 6 exclusive previews in german audio only seems like a publish accident to me.

Technically though all the OT stuff that's been changed or re-created for the SE should count as "deleted scenes"... ;-)

If we only get the Deleted Scenes in SD, what would it be good for?

The Blu-Ray Full Trailer in 1080p resolution indicates that the shown deleted scenes are only SD-video-quality:

45min of deleted scenes for each trilogy? I thought it was for the whole saga. If those are in HD, I might consider buying the saga boxset.

Those 45min each will be filled with introduction videos from some guy talking about the scene for sure. So raw footage length will be much less. But you are true - it's quite something!

BTW: The Pod-Racing, that walmart released last monday, is now in 1080p on starwars.com/movies/saga:

Deleted Scenes that are in the new trailer:

Ep4: Luke fixes some stuff from before looking into the sky
Ep4: Extended Cantina Footage (Han with Girlfriend) black/white
Ep5: R2 flees away from Wampa
Ep6: Luke building his green lightsaber

The pink is awful present. Did GL turn gay that he enforces this new color?

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

Those guys from the press asked such lousy questions that have been asked before and have nothing todo with the blu-ray release.

"Q: Is everyone SW fan?"
"Q: What is your most cherished SW memory?"
"Q:Did you [as a actor] get the part you wanted in Star Wars?"
"Q: GL has changed the movies over the years - what would you change?"
"Q: How you would you recommend watching the six films for the first time? 456, then 123 or the other way?"
"Q: What do you feel about the fandom?"
"Q: Is GL right to change the films? Is there more monkeying around?"
"Q: What's the future of Star Wars?"
"Q: What do you think of Star Wars in 3D?"

That was supposed to be an ILM presentation?

Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)
Time

As dark_jedi will release his Bluray Trilogy Project to the public soon, we could use this as base for a German Bluray Trilogy Project.

I might even buy a laserdisc player for this, but it won't feature Digital Audio out. :(

Can anyone help us providing the german PCM streams on the laserdiscs? You could use your Laserdisc Player and hook it up to a DVD Recorder and record picture with PCM audio instead of dd2.0. Or of course a soundcard with PCM-In.

I will upload my stuff on usenet asap.

I have analyzed the footage released on the german site. Actually I wanted to release some comparison pics (see below) regarding quality/colors. But I found two most interesting screenshots - movie frames. The first one further indicate that Episode II seems to get a recut in the final fight between dooku and yoda. There is a frame there which is not on the DVD. And there is an Episode 3 frame from the Kenobi/Darth Vader Duel that is not there on the DVD as well.

Another info for the german fans. The german blu-ray trailer indicates no new synchronization, that's good news at least.

No, most of those shots are Promos already released in 77/80/83. Non of the OT pics seems to be a screenshot of the BluRay.

thanks for clarification. removed the image to avoid further confusion. btw - i like your german star wars trailer recreation.

Minor important info:

It seems in germany the two main electronic markets will both offer a special bundle for all those who prebook the complete saga:

Saturn: 99 € including an Hasbro Action Figure - Boba Fett Prototype
Mediamarkt: no price info, including a Limited Edition Senitype Filmstrip

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

to bring in some comments about dubbed versions: The german OT SE introduced a 2nd voice for Luke, used in the reinserted Biggs scene at the end of EP4. It introduced a 2nd voice for Darth Vader, used in ESB for the 'Bring my Shuttle' scene. Both voices don't(!) fit well.

The 2004 ESB DVD introduced a 3rd voice for Darth Vader, used for the Emperor Hologram scene. And a 2nd voice for the Emperor, in the very same scene.

It's a shame having a character using 3 voices in one single movie.

At least the Ep4 fanfare is intact in the german audio, so are the lines spoken by Boba Fett dub actor, they were overseen (or untouched) by LFL in 2004.

So the more GL is changing his saga to fit it together, the more it falls apart in its international versions.

Although, what I find curious is that it is documented that there were digital projections of TPM in 99, so why didn't they use the digital copy made for those projections for the DVD?

I had the same question myself.

The EpI DVD does not contain the theatrical version but the DVD-Version of EpI. Nevertheless they could have used the digital copy as a base.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

having followed this thread for a long time now.

It's so funny that the material released about the upcoming Blu Ray set only features stuff from the OT: Deleted Scenes Teaser & Comic-Con Death Star Attack.

It's even more funny that most of the comments on the blu-ray section on the official site http://www.starwars.com/movies/saga/ are not positive. I suggest, you join the commentary section and insert your 2 cents!

Regarding leaking of the final blu-ray disks: DarthFirst got his hands on the Trilogy DVDs in July 2004 for the September 2004 release http://www.millenniumfalcon.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=1465&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0&sid=d0789123bf220a83d0740aa61e741a16. So we could say that the final disks should already be pressed by this time. With any luck the blu-rays will leak soon.

I don't understand why LFL did use the new transfer for the Episode I blu-ray. From point of sale this will reduce the quality improvement for the Episode I 3D blu-ray. After all they will only have 3D & unreleased bonus features as sellers for the 2013 blu-ray. But I don't care too much about the PT anyway ;)

Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)

Moth3r said:

Just use your ears; if you listen to the first few bars of the Star Wars theme music from each release it will be obvious if they are at different pitches.

Hi Moth3r! I don't agree here. It's not about the music.

I think you have to distinguish between the music/effects audio track and the dialogue track, that is mixed together later for the end product.

When synchronizing a movie only the dialogue track gets replaced.

The dialogue track can be thought of a bunch of voices, piece for piece, played at a specific timestamp.

The 24fps version plays the music/effects audio track at original speed, while the 25fps version plays the music/effects audio track with 104% speed.

Both of them get the dialogs mixed in at the specified timestamps, but the dialog track is always played at original speed!

Compare the german audio of any movie dvd with its bluray edition. Music/effects play faster but the voices are at the same frequencies!

The actors of Star Wars on DVD sound the same as on the upcoming Blurays.

We can compare the english voices on the UK DVD and the US DVD to see if I am right.

What does that all mean us?

As we only have the end product of the audio track the solution can't be slowing down the audio. My experience is the voices are correct as they are now on all PAL releases. If you want to fix the speed of the music/effects, you would have to have access to the production audio tracks.
