Idea: My Perfect Original Trilogy DVD Release
Time

Perfect Blu-Ray for Star Wars 77

BD1- 1080p Theatrical Cut, 1997 SE, Ultimate Cut with seamless branching

Visual Commentary with several people involved (Including GL I guess but I dont particularly like listening to him), including concept sketches, storyboards, outtakes etc.

Visual Fan "Geek" commentary with major industry people. JJ Abrams? Kevin Smith? Kyle Newman? Simon Pegg? Dave Filoni?

1.0 Lossless theatrical mono, 2.0 lossless theatrical stereo, 4.1 lossless 6-track mix, 5.1 lossless 97 mix, 7.1 lossless remastered Blu mix

BD2-Extras!

Deleted Scenes- EVERYTHING including the Luke and Biggs scenes and the original Jabba and Cantina scenes. With or without introductions by GL

Several minidocs- editing, sound, scoring, characters, how things changed from the original ideas, woes on set and budgetary problems, technology and spaceships, practical effects 101, making the ultimate cut etc.

Empire of Dreams doc or something similar. It would be nice to see a similar doc for each film.

Some kind of unnecessary game that is barely playable with a BD remote

Some kind of unnecesary BD-Live tie in to SW.com

I'd want something similar for each movie

The one on the left is correct. However, you need to change your sequence's settings to 16:9. Always make sure your sequence and your clips are in the same format. What you should get is something that looks like the right one but with a 16:9 "box" enclosing it instead of a square one.

I can't walk you through it because I don't have FCS installed on my notebook atm. Right click the sequence and one of the options should allow you to change sequence settings.

It may help to set your sequence first and the import the clips.

I use Mac OS X Leopard (10.5), because I need to use Final Cut for school (or so I was told when I bought the computer - still haven't touched Final Cut).

I also have Windows 7 installed via Boot Camp, which I like very much, and use for anything I can't use OS X for.

I don't really take a side.  I like OS X a lot, it's very easy to use, but it doesn't have the wide range of programs/applications for it that Windows does.  If I could do everything I can do in Windows on OS X, I would.

But Windows 7 is pretty awesome ...

This, except I use Snow Leopard (10.6) and I use Final Cut all the time.

I've encoded the film and deleted scenes to Prores422, and while the main movie is fine, the deleted scenes are enlarged and take up the entire screen (whereas with the main movie, there is letterboxing).

This did not happen with DVCPRO50, and the original M2Vs were the right size in premiere.

I'm confused!

ProRes is just better quality I believe. I think it has better color fidelity but don't take my word for it. I also know it preserves timecode and I'm not sure if DVCPRO50 does. ProRes is only available with FCS because it's a special format designed for pro editors, especially when working with HD (its great for SD too). As for your deleted scenes issue, I'm not sure what the issue is. Did you check anamorphic widescreen?

Idea: a Star Trek 2009 Extended Cut?

Just went over the scenes on the Blu-Ray. You'll need someone with quite a bit of After Effects prowess. Even where it's not obvious, there are little things that need to be done, like adding the silhouettes of those massive background buildings in the Kirk and George as kids scene. You would also need to change Kirk's line "Hey Johnny" in the finished film to "Hey George" possibly using dialogue from another child actor in some other movie. The location titles on Rura Penthe would have to be cropped out and then remade to match the rest of the movie (might be wrong on this one). The short scene where the Klingons capture the Narada is almost unusable because they all speak in Romulan, and they do that nowhere else in the movie.

Yoda should of been in the PT, but he shouldn't of had the kind of screen time he had.  Yoda was the head of the Jedi Council, thats pretty important.

I see no reason why we need a digital Yoda in the OT.  If you think about it, why did Yoda need to be CG in the PT?  Cause of pointless duels.  He should of been the same freakin puppet from the OT when he was in the Temple.

The idea of a CG Yoda was a good one, but CG isn't good enough yet.

It is weird that we go from CG to puppet. Mabey someday, CG will take a huge leap and GL will put a consistent, real looking CG Yoda in all 5 movies.

I know he's the head of the JC. But how does he impact the story? In other words, you couldn't take Padme, Kenobi, or Anakin out because they're tied directly to the storyline.

But Yoda? For the amount of screen time he has, his connection to the story is really weak.

I don't think they should of taken him out, I think they should have give him something more important to do.In TPM he served as a counter to Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan in the training of Anakin but so did Windu.

Hi, Final Cut guy here. Don't try editing the M2Vs. Final Cut is an amazing editor but it's a bit finicky about what you put into it. To Balance Quality with Editability I'd recommend you use MPEG Streamclip to convert the m2Vs into either ProRes422 (If you have FCS) or DVCPRO50 (If you are using Express). turn the quality slider all the way up.

DV looks like shite (a good example would be the Phantom editor's DVDs) and those Photo and Animation formats are slow and hard to edit

Hope that helps.

Btw welcome to the Mac club :)

someone who doesn't like the classic specials!?!  that sacrilege!   Burn 'im at the stake!

haha!  I'm just not into the commercialized, marketed version of Christmas.  I never really liked them as a kid, either.  I do like the old Grinch cartoon, though.  The Charlie Brown Christmas is great as well.

What are you talking about? I thought marketing and corporate plunder was what Christmas wall all about! Anyway, cant forget about the Charlie Brown Christmas. But cmon' Silver and Gold? You gotta like Rudolph, even if it's only for the animation.

I have not seen the film yet though the films message will be judged by me if its applicability or pure allegory.  I dislike pure allegory usually in fantasy fiction.

As for a sci fi film actually having some plot, meaning and feeling and a message that should have been what Star Trek should have been instead of a remake of starship troopers/star wars.  This to me has the chance of being the second good sci film of the year the other was District 9. Star Trek was nothing but sights and sounds lacking any subtance, lens flares and shaky cam, pure eye candy aka junk.  Good action film it may have been Star Trek it was not.

Star Trek has really always more about the characters than the science fiction, and while there has definitely been much more cerebral Star Trek, I think Abrams captured the series' essence perfectly. Like the original Star Wars it's NOT all flash and effects, It also has great characters and a solid story. By your logic Star Wars was also junk. I'm sure the next Star Trek film will have a message but for the first one it would have been too much to have a message, reset the continuity, introduce the characters, do the origin story, liven up the action and "sexiness" of the series all at the same time. Now that all that stuff is out of the way, the next one can have more of a message.

I guess the thing that makes cursing "cool" is that it is a "nonconformist" sort of thing to do. Society says swearing is bad, so every would be rebel out there does it.

I've honestly never thought that much about swearing.  I swear because I do.  I'm not trying to be a conformist, or a non-conformist, or cool, or badass, or anything.  I grew up with constant swearing all around me (mainly from my father), so to me, it's just how I talk.

By the way, this thread has veered pretty fucking far away from Avatar and 3D.  (Yes, that was intentional this time.)  So I'll throw my two cents in on this subject as of now:

As I said, I was very underwhelmed by the first trailer.  The second was better, but still not "HOLY SHIT I HAVE TO SEE THIS NOW!!!" by any means.  Now, the reviews are overwhelmingly positive.

So I'm gong to go, with modest expectations, to see it at the Navy Pier IMAX in Chicago on Friday.  I'm not holding my breath for a "revolution in cinema" or whatever the hell Cameron thinks this movie is, but I'm intrigued enough to see it.  I would see it in a regular theater since it wasn't shot in IMAX, but of all types of 3D I've seen, the only one that has ever immersed me properly is IMAX 3D, most likely because the screen envelops your entire field of vision, unlike a regular screen.  So Avatar will be an exception to my usual rule of "see it how it was shot."

If it's good, I'll see it again in 2D to see how that changes things.  The 2D version will also be in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio, whereas the 3D version will be 1.78:1, so that should be an interesting comparison (I prefer 2.39:1 generally, but I see how 1.78:1 would be better for 3D).

Thank you Chainsawash!

Really? What makes you think he/she/it is a lady? You thought the Gaffer was a lady too. Perhaps you just have an inclination to assume people are ladies? Or maybe Octocrox actually is a lady and you know what you are talking about on this one.

As for me, I am still the old fashioned sort that doesn't believe in cursing in front of ladies, and since I have the unfortunate tendancy to let one slip on these forums ever now and then, I like to assume this is a mostly estrogen free zone (with the exception of vbangle, who I believe is made up entirely of estrogen; and who will never know I said this about him because he has me on ignore).

Eh, the ladies curse in front of me all the time so I don't really mind. Maybe it's a generational thing. For me it's an issue of appropriateness. I won't curse in a formal environment at all. I won't curse in front of professors. I won't curse in front of my parents unless out of anger. I won't curse In front of others in a loose environment unless they themselves are cursing. I find it a pretty good balance.

(I like how this discussion has turned from Avatar to etiquette. I will be seriously disappointed if someone tries to "salvage" the topic.)
