Preserving the...cringe...Star Wars Holiday Special (Released)

Maybe I'm just ignorant, but what is this commentary?

Good luck on this project. I'm sure that many of us would love to see the final product.
Other suggestions for the disc are:
I think I've seen some TV commercials for the SWHS on some disc I have, but I could be mistaken. If memory serves, they were included on the KCCI disc, but I could be wrong. I'll try to look around tonight.

Cash cow-abanga shit, another SW OT dvd repackaging for the holidays! Luca$$$

I see the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles is being released on DVD this fall for the Christmas Season, as I think Lucas is taking a break with any new SW release to pump up interest in Indy IV. That means Indy IV & the new Indy Boxset will come to DVD next fall, so I am starting to believe the rumored boxset may not come til 2009. Think about it, Lucas puts out one new release every year on DVD:

TPM - 2001
AOTC - 2002
Indy Boxset - 2003
OT/SE - 2004
ROTS - 2005
GOUT - 2006
Young Indy Chronicles - 2007
Indy IV - 2008

Sorry guys, but even though it is not confirmed they will ever remaster the OOT, we may have to wait till the HD/BluRay format war is ended to see something new from SW. IMO

I think another issue is that how many copies of Star Wars does the average person want? I mean, you have the the '04 release, the '05 re-release without bonus disc, then the GOUT with non-remastered laserdisc rip OOT. Most people who wanted Star Wars has it by now. I'd be suprised if the completist-collector's market has enough to make another release profitable. So Lucasfilm might be waiting for the format war to end, and the winning format to get into a certain number of homes for the new release with new bonus features, etc.

Help: looking for... 1997 SE TB Digital Broadcasts

No seed ATM, but that could change....

Unfortunately, I don't think that there have been any seeders to that torrent in quite a while. Also, no ESB or ROTJ.
But I too wish that someone would post one something like Gkar or TB editions somewhere. Maybe someday....

Idea: 'Cheers' - Seasons 9-11 preservation?
Time
I hate it when the studios start to release complete season sets of a series, then stop part way. They started to release the classic western Have Gun, Will Travel on DVD, and so far have only released the first 3 out of 6. But its been a year or more since the last season was released, and it doesn't look like the rest will get released. Maybe someday they'll finish some of these releases up.

"Making of Star Wars" (1977) taped from ABC??

Yes, William Conrad did the original narration from 1977, when it first aired on TV. I have a manufactured copy of that, but not a taped copy of the original broadcast when it aired.

The 90's re-issue of that special was a VHS tape made available through a 'corn pops' mail-in offer. Famed movie trailer voice artist Don LaFontaine did the narration for that issue.

Again, all I'm looking for is the original broadcast recoridng of the original 1977 special. Still waiting...

One might have to settle for the manufactured copy of this. Since it was released officially, I would think that it wouldn't of been held onto or distributed unofficially as much as something like the Star Wars Holiday Special.

As for preservations, I'm surprised nobody has done a version of the Making of Star Wars with selectable narration, by either the original William Conrad or the re-release by Don LaFontaine.

Why the hell did the lazy Emperor even think Luke would join the dark side and become his new apprentice?!

I was talking more about the 1-6 story line. Among other lost opportunities, the prequels could have shown what the power of the Dark Side really was.

In the 4-6 story line, the whole scenario in ROTJ works a little better. We have to imagine what the power of the Dark Side is. We dont have the Sith "rule of two", so we don't know the Emperor plans to replace Vader until the end, and this makes Vader less of a willing participant in his own demise.

Lucas bothered to change dialog on the ESB DVD so that Vader is trying to hide Luke from the Emperor. But he did nothing to change Vader's motives in ROTJ.

The more I think about this stuff, the more I get depressed.

Before the prequels, the dark side seemed to be much easier to fall to. So the emperor didn't have to work as hard, because it didn't take all that much. Get Luke to strike down Vader in anger, or something similar, and that would be it. The dark side was very potent, and very controlling.

Then we had the prequels. In that, Anakin can basically be constantly angry and self-centered, cut down an entire tribe of sandpeople in a fit of uncontrollable rage, decapitate Count Dooku in cold blood, and he's still good, still not dark side. (I'm not even counting the stuff in the Clone Wars cartoons) For him to finally become a sith, he had to take an oath and willing turn evil. The dark side seems to be very difficult to fall to in the prequels. I would think that by prequel standards, Luke could of killed Vader and the Emperor himself, with no dark side troubles.
Of course, by OT standards, Anakin would of fallen sometime during AOTC.

MASH

MASH was pretty good, I thought. Glad to see someone else here is a fan.
Have you ever seen the TV series yet? there are several changes between the movie and the show. As for 'best episodes', most are pretty good. The few I can think off off the top of my head are the last episode: "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen" and the one were Radar is wounded, and the one where they are making the newsreel about the war, and they interview most of the camp about the war. Sorry I can't remember the episode names. There are usually reruns of MASH on at around 9:00-10:00 or so where I live, and I imagine that it shouldn't be too hard to find. I think it is even on TV Land now. So it shoudn't be too hard to find on TV. Enjoy!

Another few good episodes I just remembered:
The episode where Radar goes home.
The episode where Col. Blake goes home.

Possible last chapter for Harry Potter Book 7 (POTENTIAL SPOILERS)

This is why I am starting to think its real. If it was a hoax, even of the quality they have obviously turned out, they would of said so, or ignored it. But they are "refusing to confirm or deny", then turn around and start shutting down everything that has it up. I just don't see them going to all that trouble for a hoax.

Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time
The issue will be gameplay, not graphics alone. The Wii had a great launch, and helped make the PS3 launch basically fail. But the question will be if the wii has any more great, must have games for it. So far, its basically a console for Wii sports and Zelda-Twilight Princess. Two games won't give it any longevity. They need more fun games. The wii had a great launch because it was fun. It also attracted groups other than teenage boys/hardcore gamers. My worry for the wii is that they won't be able to follow-up on Wii sports. If the Wii has no staying power, it will be because it couldn't do it.

When the PS3 launched, that seemed to be the main selling point, how great the graphics were, and it didn't do so well. Many failed systems had the 'best graphics' in their day, and still failed.

Holiday Special Cartoon/Deleted Scene DVD rumours at CELEBRATION IV
Time
I'd be suprised if we ever actually see an official DVD of The Holiday Special. I could understand the Boba Fett cartoon released as an extra on some sort of upcoming DVD release, but the Holiday Special as a whole, probably not.
Of course, I'll point out other Star Wars stuff that hasn't gotten a release, such as the Droids and Ewoks cartoons. That only got a partial release, and most episodes are unavailable outside of fan preservations, and I haven't ever actually seen an Ewoks preservation yet.
