People need to stop quoting IMDB like it’s gospel. It’s a Wikipedia for movies before Wikipedia was out - user cultivated and generated. It can be (and frequently is) wrong.

true I don’t usually trust them and take everything with a grain of salt from their I just was shocked that I’ve never read some of this stuff anywhere else lol

the chalk scene was filmed but never included in any release as for the Harrison Ford scene its on the a LD set along with an alternate ending this I can confirm as I’ve seen it

Right, its just one final version no workprints or v2.0 or v2.5 etc its not really even a fan edit its just an HD upgrade of the 20th anniversary version for people like myself who want both versions in the best possible quality I feel that way for all films for that matter, which strangely enough its called the directors cut on movie censorship, I much prefer just calling it the 20th anniversary edition, are all the sources in place at this point ? the only one I could think of as being absent is the 20th anniversary 5.1 DTS track, then again isn’t that included in the 720p version ? if not the dvd is very easy to find, then all that would need to be done is to rip the tracks their are 2 on their I just checked ones the DTS and the others Digital Dolby but they are the same track, but I assume we’re going with the DTS 5.1 track for this

also should we start thinking up names for this release, I think it should be called something other than the “20th anniversary HD”

I agree the 720p version seems to have more detail, Im not exactly an expert on upscaling and quality control but being the blu ray is 1080p and this is 720p wouldn’t it fit better if both sources were 720p because the upscale clearly looks darker and less detailed than the blu ray would, I think the 720p footage mixed with the blu ray even if it were a combination of 720p (for the 20th anniversary footage) and 1080p (for the blu ray) would go together quite nicely, unless it possible fore some one to clean it up a bit and make it more seamlessly match (the blu ray looks incredible, to say the least is seems like it would be hard to match without a true 1080p source) I am sure it will look good regardless anyway then its just a matter of syncing the audio which seems like it wont be too hard

what do you guys think ?

I read that it was changed in 1988 so I assume the movie being it came out originally in 1982 had the line in tact in theaters, the blu ray restores it though but the original laserdisc release seems to have come out in 1998 so I guess that’s where the change originate the original vhs release was in 1988 as well and I assume they use the same master as the laserdisc

More interesting things I found on IMDB

On the VHS version when E.T. is watching the Tom and Jerry cartoon, he gasps and starts yelling. The original version and 20th anniversary have him scream like he’s scared after the gasp.

In the original theatrical release of this film, in the scene where E.T. is drinking and getting Elliot drunk, Elliot used chalk and began drawing on thin air. This scene was later cut from video and subsequent theatrical releases, but is pictured in The E.T. Storybook.

In the original cut, Elliot and his mom go to the principal after the frog incident. The principal was played by Harrison Ford, the screenwriter’s husband. Allegedly the scene was cut because too much attention was brought to Ford, and not to the scene. The scene is not restored in the 2002 edition.

In the original VHS copy of the movie (the classic black and green plastic) as well as television broadcasts, the now infamous terrorist line was simply supplanted with “You can’t get dressed up like THAT” and not the terrorist line OR the hippie line of the 20th anniversary edition.

well I cant do anything technically but, I was confirming that their are at 3 tracks at least the whole intent of this is a restoration of the 20th anniversary so only that track would be needed nut the blu ray/dvd from 2012 uses a slightly different mix than the one on the 2002 theatrical dvd its nothing major I just compared and noticed like 3 things mentioned

  1. alternate line about E.T. having dna
  2. static added when the feds and mary find the van at the playground
  3. the ship has more of a hum to it taking off at the beginning (im not sure about this one it sounded pretty similar)

There were some new sounds added to the 20th anniversary cut that have actually made it into the mix now used for the theatrical cut but not all. Some of these fit, some dont. I’ll try to give a rough list of what they are. Might need some double clarification or elaboration on this.

  1. A ‘bump’ noise added when E.T. rushes past the van when the Feds spot him, likely him bumping against the van’s grill as he rushes away. Now included in the theatrical cut.

  2. Extra flash noises as the mothership flies by in the air. Now included in the theatrical cut.

  3. E.T. hopping to his feet, followed by the fluttering away of non-existent birds, and the sound of E.T.'s feet as he advances toward the town. Now included in the theatrical cut, which makes no sense since these dont fit the action depicted in the original cut.

  4. The word ‘shit’ is cut when Michael is at the fridge and sings the line ‘nothing but health shit’.

  5. Extra ‘scream’ when E.T. is scared by the Tom and Jerry cartoon. Now included in the theatrical cut.

  6. Mary tells Michael he’s not going out as a hippie instead of terrorist.

  7. Alternate ADR added to the medical scene(s). The dialogue about E.T. having DNA is completely different and has new lines. The 2002 DVD of the theatrical cut has the original dialogue while the ‘new’ dialogue is included on the 2012 BD/DVD.

  8. Radio static added to the scene where Mary and the feds approach the abandoned van. Included on the 2002 DVD of the theatrical cut but removed for the 2012 DVD/BD.

I just checked the 2012 DVD and compared it to the 2002 DVD here’s what I found

a bump when E.T. hits the car in the beginning (Both)
Spaceship take off (sounds the same to me possibly more of a hum in 2012 very minute)
E.T.'s scream (same for both)
Michael says shit (Both)
no birds fluttering (Both)
Mary tells Michael he’s not going as a terrorist (Both)
the DNA line is “He’s got DNA, he doesn’t have 4 nucliotides like we do he has 6” in 2012, in 2002 its “He’s got DNA, Im positive” (Changed)
Radio Static (2002 only)

so the bluray track isn’t the original theatrical one used ? this makes sense the track used currently was made specifically for the blu ray, they must have mixed elements from both tracks to create a new one would you be able to get the 20th anniversary track ?

I came up with an idea that should make everyone happy sort of in the style of Harmy, we include all known tracks

Theatrical (VHS/Laserdisc Release ???)
20th Anniversary (DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital)
Blu-Ray (New 7.1 Track)

so this would mean that their are at least 3 tracks 4 if you include the Dolby version of the 20th anniversary

how about some bonus features, should we go all out

WOW this is really coming together, I wish I could be of more help but my current setup isn’t ideal for editing the best I could do is offer some tips about the 20th anniversary version and give links or info if I find anything new, so to sum it up so far we have

at least 2 different confirmed 720p hdtv rips of the 20th anniversary version (hopefully widescreen)
we need access to a blu ray rip of the 1982 version (a 720p rip for consistent quality between both sources, unless it can be up converted to 1080p somehow)
a list of changes between the 20th anniversary and original theatrical cut
access to the DTS and Dolby audio tracks

something just occurred to me if the 20th anniversary version is in 720p and the only differences are two extra scenes with the rest being altered shots is a blu ray rip needed since the blu ray is exactly the same minus the digital alterations couldn’t the 720p rip just be synced up with the DTS and Dolby tracks and be made available, unless of course if someone else has a better idea

did I miss anything ?

Im sort of an E.T. expert as ive seen it millions of times since I was a kid, its been a while since I watched the 20th anniversary but as far as I know all the changes are listed on movie censorship, the 20th anniversary has a new digitally remastered soundtrack the only 2 entirely new scenes are E.T. taking a bath and Gertie and Michael being picked up on Halloween night by their mother most of the alterations are enhancements to the E.T. animatronic giving him more dynamic facial expressions, basically just about every shot of E.T. is replaced with a cgi model sometimes entirely and sometimes just parts, the only actual altered bit of the audio track is the line between Michael and his mother concerning his Halloween costume instead of her saying terrorist its replaced by hippie but the whole exchange is way shorter than the original line, their are altered shots such as the bike passing the moon (Elliot has his cape now)

actually a lot of shots are entirely replaced and really can’t just be rotoscoped into the blu ray footage id say a 720p blu ray rip mixed with the 720p hdtv rip of the 20th anniversary would be the best splice in any new shots and scenes, then just sync the dts soundtrack and the dolby soundtrack for good measure and ta da

20th anniversary trailer mentioning the remastered soundtrack and digitally enhanced effects
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TheDCyeGiEI

the 2002 2 disc special edition dvd has the DTS 5.1 track along with the Dolby Digital 5.1 track im not sure about the single disc releases, though id assume it does

yes I started this thread and sort of seem like I need to put my input in and I think no matter how people feel about the walkie talkies, they should be included along with every new shot, its meant to be a preservation a HD version of the 20th anniversary 100%

found the opening logo on youtube in 720p I assume the hd rip includes this however

funny you mention this, it seems that many movies are shown open matte on tv channels I know for sure show some open matte movies are

AMC
FX
FXM
BBC America
SYFY

I noticed if it says “this film has been modified from its original version, it has been formatted to fit this screen” theirs a good chance of it being open matte

I know someone asked about x-men fx showed the last stand and its on demand on fx too and it displays this message
