And the problem is, for TTT and ROTK, the audio continues over the black screen that says INSERT DISC 2, so if you just join them at the cut to black without overlapping the audio from disc 1, you get a hard audio cut that’s jarring. This isn’t the case for FOTR, a simple join works fine for that one.

If he releases it as a BDMV, you can use MakeMKV to turn it into one file.

It’s not on this list but I did read that Scarface - Al Pacino has a scene in the theatrical print that is not in any other version so that would be one to look out for.

Just thought I would give the heads up on that…

Specifically, it had an intermission in the original theatrical release.

As per the “35mm prints for sale” thread, there is a Russian print of this up on eBay, which would be extremely useful for missing frames.

Fan preservations are never to be bought or sold. They are freely available to those who legally owns the home video version used as the release’s primary source, or in the case of 35mm scans, any home video version (I think).

I saw Alien: Covenant, which was much better than I was expecting. While it definitely has some idiot plot elements, it does a great job with its atmosphere. All of my complaints are with the story decisions made; the film-making was rather excellent.

Also, just a heads up, The Godfather will be in theaters in the USA on Sunday and Wednesday for its 45th anniversary. I’m sure it will be the Coppola Restoration master, and I’m excited to see the film on the big screen for my first time.

I have seen images of many Titanic release print film cell strips that were being sold loose on ebay and elsewhere. What I noticed is that when I extract the full height of those cells and crop out the rounded edges at the sides, I get an aspect ratio of about 2.20:1 (around that) not 2.39:1. The 2.39:1 is achieved by further cropping the extra height.

I have seen this in the case of the Empire Strikes Back anamorphic print as well. The original cells had more image at top & bottom than the final cropped version released.

Because Titanic was also released in 70mm with the 2.20:1 aspect ratio, I would request that at least one release of this print be made with the full height of the frame kept intact, so that someone interested can create a 70mm version out of it and the existing open-matte materials.

Print looks beautiful so far!

I’ve finally decided on what my very first project will be: The Ring.

The Ring (2002) is one of my favorite horror movies. Unfortunately, the Blu-ray release is even scarier than the movie itself. It suffers from an EXTREME green tint throughout the whole movie. While the movie was always very cool in its palette (which matches the mood quite nicely), the Blu-ray takes it to a whole other level. Fortunately, the DVD’s colors are much better. So, I’m going to use Dr. Dre’s Color Matching and Color Balancing tools to fix this thing.

I tried using the Color Matching tool without the Balancing, but Balancing first gave better results.

Here’s a comparison (Sorry for the super high resolution on these, that was a mistake on my part):

I’ve done a quick test with the tool on this screenshot with promising results:

It’s not perfect, but it is MUCH better. In addition, you may notice slight cropping issues with the BD-to-BD comparisons, those are my doing, and certainly wouldn’t be present on the release. The slight pixellation in the corrected BD shots are also my fault, not the tools.

Fortunately, the tint seems to be fairly consistent across the movie, so I might not need to do a shot by shot correction, though it is a definite possibility.

I think we might finally have a way to piece together the film as it originally aired. Saturday VH1 here in the US aired the “TV” version of Titanic with the alternative version of the drawing scene. The transfer was beautiful though, and in the correct aspect ratio. The only logo/bug on the screen was a tiny VH1 logo that sat in the black bar space at the bottom of the screen. It didn’t show on any part of the movie itself. I missed the first half of the film, but they are scheduled to re-air it two more times. I’ve set both to record just to be safe. I didn’t detect any censorship other than the drawing scene but I plan to watch it all the way through when it re-airs to make sure.

If it is complete as I believe it would be very easy to edit the drawing scene from the 2012 version into this TV version of the pre-2012 version to make it complete as it originally was.
