Help Wanted: Greed (1924) General Release Version on TCM - any cap this?
Time

What TCM actually showed was the “reconstructed” 4-hour cut, not the general release version. I believe the GRV was issued on LaserDisc.

Weird. I was under the impression that, contrary to their normal operating procedure, they showed the general release cut instead of their 4-hour reconstructed cut. Are you sure about this?

Help Wanted: Greed (1924) General Release Version on TCM - any cap this?
Time

TCM is showing the general release cut of Greed this Sunday. Turner has had the rights for the movie since the 90s, and generally only shows their attempt at a restoration of the longer, original version that was never widely released. Read more at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greed_(film). However, they are showing the general release version on the 15th. Can anyone capture this airing? It would be awesome to preserve this cut in HD, as it doesn’t seem to exist in HD anywhere else. Thanks to anyone who can help.

It comes on at midnight EST, 11:00 CST, April 15th.

James Bond - The Living Daylights - 35mm (Released)
Time

RU.08 said:

The issue with the Bonds is a mixed one - some of them look great on Bluray and they have done a good restoration job, others were rushed to meet the deadline and look awful. Really they should have restored them in batches instead of trying to do all 22 Bonds (at the time) at once.

IIRC they basically did the great restorations for the most popular films, then rushed the rest.

kk650's Regraded Spider-Man: Homecoming (blanket yellow tint removed from blu-ray) (Released)
Time

Frank Sintelle said:

Right, I know that’s what’s been done, but why? Is there any reason to believe the yellow tint isn’t intentional? In a modern DI workflow that involves no photochemical steps, there’s no reason to doubt what’s been released.

kk650 has a long history of color correcting movies not to make them more theatrically accurate, but to make them look better. Just a different philosophy from most projects here.

After Ellison threatened legal action, subsequent prints of The Terminator have since carried, “Acknowledgement to the works of Harlan Ellison” during the end credits.

Honestly, this is such a minor change that I’m not too bothered by it. That said, it would be a (relatively) easy project, if someone wanted to remove it.

Sadly this new release contains a couple of minor digital alterations. The windshield does not fall out of the truck in the first chase sequence. In addition, an obvious Arnie stunt double has been altered to look more like Arnie in a motorcycle scene (I think the same scene as the truck).

I haven’t seen the new 3D release but… are the alterations distracting on George Lucas levels? With today’s technology I’d imagine making the stunt guy look more like Arnie, could be done pretty flawlessly. The windshield I can sort of understand because it has always fallen in the past viewings.

I had never seen the movie before and never would have noticed them. The stunt guy is far away in the shot, so quite small. The changes are totally transparent.

An insider at Paramount claims that from 1997 onwards, the colours on The Godfather and Part II have never been correct and very likely, never will be. A depressing read that also includes details of how the original negative was mishandled during the 80s for home video transfers.

Man, I never would have known. The Coppola restorations of the first two are top notch releases that look phenomenal.

A new blu-ray release of T2 is coming out soon which will fingers crossed be a big improvement over all previous blu-ray releases. I plan to release an updated version of Terminator 1 as well to tie in with that release.

Another Cameron title for the list. Don’t forget the numerous digital revisions to T2: Judgement Day on the 3D theatrical re-release…

These revisions will also be present on the 4K BD and (presumably) the standard BD that comes with it.

Stephen King's IT (1990) - Original two-part version! [RELEASED]

No, no such thing is planned.
However, you can just take MKVtoolnix, load the MKV file into MKVtoolnix GUI and specify the following:

Tab: Output
Split mode: After specific timecodes
Timecodes: 01:35:22.645

This will split the MKV into two at the exact location of the Part 1/2 split.

I was able to do this successfully. It took all of 8 minutes. Thanks!

GOT IT! The video quality isn’t perfect, obviously, but it’s 100 times better than that smeary Night Tracks/youtube upload.

This version is longer—the Night Tracks version was obviously edited:

I’ll need some assistance going forward…

The video was deleted! Maybe try Vimeo?

To my eyes the difference between the warm grade and the cool grade is pretty subtle, so I’d be happy with either. Here’s a screenshot comparison:

I think i prefer the cool, though as you said, they’re very close and are both great.
