Info Wanted: 'TekWar' & 'Alien Nation' movies - has anyone preserved them?
Time
Ok so I won bidding on the 4 TekWar VHS films, now the "DVDs To Do" list is:

Finish Star Wars trilogy
Blade Runner HDTV to DVD
Re-do Explorers DVD (make menus, restore the bonus scenes)
Re-do my complete ReBoot DVD set
TekWar PAL VHSs, NTSC laserdisc & NTSC DVDs to a PAL DVD set.

*phew* I don't think I'm ever going to run out of projects

~French Coffret Trilogie LD to DVD transfer~ (Released)
Time
From what I've seen, the video on the Coffret LD set is from the same source used for the French THX LDs, German THX LDs and UK widescreen VHSs, and shares the same audio source as the UK widescreen VHSs in that it's time compressed so pitch is preserved but the dynamic range has been compressed so loud explosions don't have any real 'impact' and just merge into any other loud noises going on.

I did a 40min test DVD using automatic 3:2 pulldown removal, the final DVD I'll manually find the undo settings because I don't trust the automatic ones, the quality is stunning and makes the official directors cut DVD look like it came from VHS or LD. But I can't start it until I've finished my SW trilogy due to the amount of space it's going to take, the 3:2 pulldown removal will probably take a few days instead of normally a few hours for a captured film due to the sheer size of the film.

You only have the 6gb capture? I have the 1920x1080 res 15gb capture, the picture doesn't go blocky during high motion like the 6gb capture, ie when Leon shoots Holden, no blockiness of the gun flashes.

I will be making PAL & NTSC DVDs from the 15gb capture, with 2 audio tracks, the first being the 5.1 mix they put out and the 2nd I'll use the 5.1 mix and add-in Deckard's voiceover, toying with the idea of putting the voiceover on the rear channels instead of the center.

But after I've completed my SW trilogy transfer though.

Starchaser actually has more parallels with The Matrix trilogy than the Star Wars trilogy!

In Starchaser a young man discovers he is 'the one' and his destiny is to free his people from being slaves to robots. In a past lifetime he went up against the robots and won but the robots are determined to stop him this time.
In The Matrix a young man discovers he is 'the one' and his destiny is to free his people from being slaves to artificial intelligence. In many past lifetimes he went up against the artificial intelligence and won but the artificial intelligence is determined to stop him for good this time.

Info Wanted: Definitive Collection versus Faces - which is better and why?
Time
Thought this was an appropriate place to post, what with the mention of the split sabers, as I was capturing the ESBcommentary audio from my Definitive LDs that don't exhibit the split sabers in ANH when Luke gets given his saber, I noticed some split saber happening when Luke & Vader are fighting and Vader falls off the carbon freezing platform:

That's some mighty weird grain removal side effect going on there... it's like the code is trying to anticipate where the lightsaber will be in the next frame but gets it wrong.

I think Shatner is only in the first TekWar movie and one maybe two of the episodes, I have the official 5-disc boxset of the TekWar series (18 episodes) and I've got my eye on an auction for the 4 films on VHS; TekWar, TekLords, TekLab & TekJustice. If I feel rich enough to bid I will so I can complete the entire collection, possibly converting the first TekWar film (NTSC laserdisc) and the 5-disc box set (NTSC DVD) to PAL DVD because that's my native viewing format.

Full-Res

But as you can see in a relatively still shot, both the Faces and Definitives blow it out of the water.

But also remember the Faces and Definitive video has been through some edge enhancement too, couple that with the temporal smoothing and that's why it has the illusion of looking sharper. If you were to do the same cap of this frame from all 3 versions you'd see what I mean:

William Shatner’s TekWar & Alien Nation, two off the beat sci-fi series I quite liked, I have all the episodes of both tv shows but not the all the films, is anyone or has anyone converted the films to DVD? as far as the films go I only have the original '89 Alien Nation film and the first TekWar film on laserdisc.

The Alien Nation films produced after the tv series are:

Alien Nation: Dark Horizon (1994)
Alien Nation: Body and Soul (1995)
Alien Nation: Millennium (1996)
Alien Nation: The Enemy Within (1996)
Alien Nation: The Udara Legacy (1997)

and the TekWar films produced before the tv series are:

TekWar: The Original Movie (1994) (I have the laserdisc of this, which is what got me into the series)
TekWar: TekJustice (1994)
TekWar: TekLab (1994)
TekWar: TekLords (1994)

And sometimes there can be some quite noticeable dotcrawl, what do you think has caused that? But don't get me wrong, to my eyes it seems perfect in every other way.

The noise you're seeing is what's on the laserdisc, the 5x capture-merge system meant I could do away with temporal softening as the picture you get is as close to what's on the laserdisc as possible.
I intentionally left the noise there for a couple of reasons; if I were to add a temporal softener filter to reduce this noise it would mean even more motion smearing and I hate that kind of smearing so I don't use temporal softeners unless I really have to, secondly to maintain an overall even quality picture feel to it because removing the noise through temporal softening would mean when there's no camera movement the picture would look extremely crisp & clean but when things started moving the noise level would increase and look worse than if the static scene already had some noise.

The dotcrawl could be because of the capture device I use, a Canopus ADVC-100 which converts the analogue video to DV so there's some compression artifacts, the 5x capture-merge and subsequent filtering helped reduce some of the compression artifacts but probably not entirely.

Thanks segaflip, I'll give it a try, if I find the process too much of a hassle or can't cut out & replace exactly the right number of frames, I'll just do the mpeg2 encoding process all over again - delaying everything by 2 days but safe in the knowledge things will be ok framecount wise.

Max_Rebo, kinda like this?

Hoichi, just keep an eye on my info/feedback thread, it has all the details relating to my trilogy transfer.

Ok, anyone know of a freeware mpeg2 cut/join tool? the ESB SL & DL & PAL & NTSC mpeg2 files are encoded but playing back I notice the black level jumps up noticably when the STAR WARS logo goes into the distance (not my encoding/filtering fault, it's like that on the disc) and I only really saw it once playing them back on a tv, so I'd like to just re-encode that part and splice it back into the 4 mpeg2 files that took almost 2 days to encode. TMPGEnc doesn't work with them because of the high filesizes. It'd be much quicker to splice fixed clips back in than re-encode the whole damn lot.
