So, the World Cup starts on Friday. Who's watching, who are you supporting, etc.

I'm obviously for England, but I'll be following USA too.

Have you figured a way to watch it? I suppose ABC and ESPN will be broadcasting some of the games, right?

i really think the USA has a great chance this year. they made it to the quarter-finals in '02. they WILL make it all the way this time around. it's high-time for an upset.

EDIT: to answer your question, ric, Soccer United Marketing (SUM), the marketing arm of Major League Soccer (MLS), will present all 64 matches LIVE in English, with no commercial interruptions during play.

ABC will air 12 games, ESPN will air 21 games, and ESPN2 will air 31 games, in both standard definition and high definition (Some cable and satellite TV operators charge extra for ABC HD, ESPN HD, and ESPN2 HD).

Univision Communications will broadcast 56 games live on Univision and 8 games live on TeleFutura, all in Spanish, with no commercial interruptions during play, in standard definition ONLY.

I'll be watching Univision.

I had already figured that ESPN were going to be showing some games, but this schedule helps immensely. Thanks dude.

As for USA having a chance, I agree - before I left England I placed a bet on England winning all their group games and USA qualifying to the second round. Whether or not they'll go all the way I'm not so sure, but I think they'll definitely make the quarter finals again. They've improved a lot in the last few years, and I think football (I may as well just bite the bullet and start calling it soccer) in general has become a lot more popular in the States in recent years.

Australia made it for the first time in 20+ years, which was exciting enough for us to begin with, but on top of that we beat Uruguay to qualify, and we tied with the Netherlands (ranked 3rd currently) two nights ago. Considering Australia's ranking, we have done very well so far.

We'll have to play Brazil soon though *gulp*, 'cause they're in our pool. I don't think any Australian has illusions of beating them.

After seeing the pathetic game against New Zeland, with no soccer traditions at all, I wouldn't be surprised if Australia beated Brazil.

I belive England might take this one.

Stick to your 'handball' game man!
LOL.

I bloody hope England win just so they will stop going on about 1966. It was 40 years ago and nobody except us cares, so just drop it. If they do win though it will sucik that I'm in America - there's nothing like the atmosphere in a London Pub during an England World Cup game, especially when they're winning. Instead I'm gonna have to settle for watching the game on my own at 8am with an American commentator getting all the names wrong.

And as for Rooney, there's no denying he's a good footie player, but he's also a chav and a hooligan. You just know that if he wasn't a footballer he'd be out nicking cars and robbing houses, and Steven Gerrard would be with him. I kinda hope he's not ready for the World Cup so someone else can rise into the limelight and we can all shut up about Rooney, but at the same time I have money on England so I kinda hope he is fit in time.

good luck finding a pub/bar playing the world cup, btw. it's pretty scarce, unless you are in NYC.

I'm not the biggest footie fan, but fuck me, all this 66 shit gets on my tits too. It just one game. I remember hearing on the radio when they revealed their new red kit, all this "it resembles the look of 66" bollox. There was 3 or 4 players spread out during the day saying the same bloody script. Footballers, most of em are thick as shit.
Which brings us back to Rooney. Fuck me Yoda man, your spot on about him 100% How the fuck did he manage to pull his missus. I know shes probably just with him now coz he's loaded. But if he was still the unknown thug, do you think she'd stick with him after finding out he shagged that old, ugly prostitute. Nope, ne niether! Not that she's stunning or anything but fuck me, he's and ugly fucker

Rooney!

Sadly I am in Jamestown ND. I'll be watching the games at home (actually, my in-laws' home. I would never consider this place to be my home).

Wayne Rooney looks like he comes from North Dakota.

pretty off-topic, but have you seen mt. rushmore yet?

Author
Time
Nope. I wanted to make the trip to South Dakota to see Mt. Rushmore (which is probably the only thing of interest within 500 miles of here), but then I saw some photos taken by a tourist and it doesn't look like you can actually get that close to the monument, which has put me off making the long trip. It seems to me to be more of a 'take a look if you're passing by' kind of thing rather than a 'make a trip especially to see it' deal.

well, you can't climb on it. there's an elevator inside it, but that's off limits to tourists. it's still worth seeing, imho

well, once you leave the dakotas, it'll be a long time before you get back there (assuming, of course). but you have to be careful and schedule around the world cup.

(you see how i got back on topic? so smooooooth)
