This sounds like a great project. I have been toying with the idea of a similar project myself, but I could not come up with a way for it not to be boring. There aren't enough images in the "Story Of" books to make a decent slide show. I thought about using more images from other sources, but it still felt underwhelming. Your idea of syncing the audio with the actual film is fantastic. I did not think of that. It's sort of a condensed version of Star Wars. I'm really looking forward to it!

You're absolutely right. And it doesn't help that there are several scenes featured in the booklet that aren't even on the album...

Sorry about that empty post!!!

MA,

I found an old advertisement for the "Story of Star Wars" LP on the following website http://www.rogersbasement.com/SWscrap20.htm, unfortunately it's not High Quality, but it might be helpful, even if for nostalgia sake.

Keep up the good work!

The editing is now completed. Thanks to Rebel11_38, there is now a beautiful title crawl to make it FEEL like SW. How could it be SW without a crawl? The color correction is as good as I can make it. Until you've really had to study the 2004 dvd, it's hard to truly understand how botched (no, butchered) the color correction (no, destruction) is on the official disc. There is no continuity at all throughout the movie even from scene to scene with color values or brightness, except that for the most part it's incredibly dark and blue. I could have easily gone down the slippery slope of trying to fix every shot for consistency, but I don't have the time or skills, really, to do that. I have for the most part brightened the whole thing (darker scenes much more) and have attempted to adjust the blue cast to something warmer and reminiscent of the real movies. It's hard to bring out detail when it's not there to begin with. It's interesting that the movie clips in the menus of the official disc have really good brightness and color. Van Ling did these himself independent of Lowery. Compare Van Ling's menu cantina clip to Lowery's. GL should have had Van Ling do the whole damn trilogy. Anyway, I digress...

Things To Be Completed

Subtitles: Never done this, but seems real straightforward. I would be interested in supplying my subtitle file for translation to other languages. I would love to have Spanish and French. I know we have some Scandinavian members here. That would be cool, too. Let me know.

Authoring: I'm going to work on some nice menus for this, maybe even multiple random menus like the official disc. Does anyone have any suggestions for easter eggs? Please PM me if you do. We'll try to keep it secret

Cover and Disc Artwork: I'm planning on doing this myself. However, I am open to collaborating with some of our great graphic artists here.

Well, what an eventful month it's been around here! A bittersweet "victory" with news of the OUT has us all a little apprehensive waiting for September. Although I haven't posted in a while, I have been working on this thing A LOT. The DVD is 90% complete. The 2 things that need to be completed are:

1) Subtitles - Incredibly tedious and boring to transcribe. I should have paid someone to do this. Around 25% complete.

2) Easter Egg - I know what I'm going to use. But, if anyone has any cool suggestions, let me know.

Menu Screenshots

Main Menu (motion with audio) - Inspired by the 2004 dvd, the live action main characters fade in and out to the left of the droids.

Chapter Menus (motion with audio) - Chapter clips loop. Pretty standard.
http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/395/chaptermenu8xm.jpg

Options Menu (still with audio) - 2 audio choices. The hybrid mix uses 2 short bits of 2004 audio mixed in. 1) The door explosion and subsequent stormtrooper blaster fire aboard the Tantive, and 2) TIE fighter roar after Ben says "Ninety-Four" in the cantina and the scene switches to a view of the Death Star. This is the most enjoyable way to watch this, but I've included pure '77 audio also.

Things To Be Completed

Cover and Disc Artwork: Haven't started yet but the idea is to make the cover look very similar to the LP cover and back. If someone has the album themselves and would like to take a stab at it, feel free. I'm definitely open to collaboration on this.

That's about it. It's almost there.

Let me answer a question that's popped up. I am going to hold off on starting ESB (and ROTJ after that) until the OUT comes out. I'd like to see how the OUT looks before getting underway. If it's not anamorphic, then the 2004 dvd may fit my workflow better with more lines of resolution to start with.

Thanks, JD! I used DVD Studio Pro 3, Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD, and Photoshop 7. I believe you're familiar with some of these.

The main menu was composited in Final Cut Pro with a mixture of Photoshop layers and live action with image masks.

The chapter and options menus were done all in Photoshop and DVDSP, although I did create custom drop zones for the chapter clips.

Things To Be Completed

Subtitles need to be finished and then it's pretty much done. Probably a couple of more weeks and then I can start sending discs out. Ah, the end is in sight....

I am really looking forward to this one MoveAlong. As I said before, I briefly toyed with this idea, but it looks like this'll be far better than anything I could have pulled off.

And congrats on seeing a project through

Great cover; perfect! That's exactly what I would have wanted it to look like.

Again, I can't wait to see the finished product.

Sorry, can't help there. But I'm excited to see this project! I'm another one who lived with the LP always playing on my little record player as a kid, and I always loved the differences in some of the takes used for Empire and Jedi particularly. I'm hoping you'll include the complete unaltered LP audio as an extra on the disc, and maybe a slide-show of the book pages? Anyways, I hope this goes out as a wide release so that those of us without newsgroup access get a shot at it.

Is there anyway I could get a disc copy of this by chance? If not I'll jsut download it.

I just remembered I have a copy of the record, still sealed in the original plastic. But it's different from the one I owned as a child (and still own). The cover is slightly different on the front, and totally different on the back, and it's not a gatefold cover. However, it still has the booklet included, according to the back cover.

There was also a picture disc version of this record as I recall, but I haven't picked up one of those.

Yesterday it was. It'd be easier to get upload approval on the 'Noid anyways, wouldn't it? In any event, HIGHLY looking forward to this making it out into release!
