Apology accepted, Captain _ender.

I really am apologizing and didn’t see this post till after my last, so please don’t take my last post too harshly. I obviously did misunderstand you and I admit that.

I agree and it’s why I think the “we need our guns in case the government goes crazy” argument is nonsense.

No! We need a right to fly fighter jets and a right to drive tanks and a right to own nuclear silos! The Second Amendment needs to be updated!

Are those silos filled with mucus?

At the very least, we need to beef up background checks. No way the nut in Florida should have been able to buys guns. The warning signs were all there.

We need to make thorough background checks and mental evaluations required in every state. Beyond that I don’t think any restrictions on the weapons themselves are necessary or particularly effective. The guns need to be kept out of reach of the kind of people who will commit atrocities, not out of reach of law abiding citizens. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.

I know most everyone here disagrees with that sentiment, but that’s how I figure it. Pretty much every shooting that has occurred has happened because there was a neglect for making sure the wrong person doesn’t get the gun.

On another note, if they can’t get guns, they’ll make homemade explosive devices out of fertilizer and blow the school up. If they can’t do that, they’ll take the steak knife from the kitchen and stab some people.

Another problem is the media coverage being way too specific.

You can’t possibly kill as many people with a knife as you can with an assault rifle.

What happened on Wednesday would not have been possible with a knife. Period.

name a use for an automatic riffle? other than having a gun fetish.

There are uses for fertilizer and steak knives. and it is hard to buy fertilizer in bulk now. because, you know, it makes sense to try to limit people having access to high kill weapons.

I’d like to see how many people that kid in Florida could have killed with a steak knife before other students took him down.
I’m guessing none. One kid gets stitches, kid with knife gets the shit kicked out of him.
Much better story than the real one.

Not for lack of trying. Columbine, for example, was meant to be a bombing. Luckily, the bombs didn’t go off, but they were still able to kill 15 people because they had guns. If they didn’t have guns, then it would’ve just been a failed bombing, not a school shooting and failed bombing. I think it’s a false equivalence to say “oh they’ll just make bombs and it’ll be the same as if they had guns,” because homemade bombs are a lot easier to fuck up, they’re not nearly as effective as guns.

I never equated the effectiveness of those other things to a gun. I never alluded to the idea that I felt those were equivalent. I simply said that there are other ways for psychos to hurt the people around them.

And considering a gun as a sporting good, doesn’t a gun have just as much use as a baseball bat or a golf club? Both of which could be easily used to bludgeon someone to death. Or a sword that has no practical in-home purpose. Again, I’m not saying these objects are of equivalent effectiveness at killing people. Just pointing out that various “deadly weapons” are found everywhere in the average American home. These things sometimes have practical use, and sometimes only exist for entertainment. But the thing they have in common is that they can all be dangerous in the wrong hands.

Guns are just the most effective way to commit mass murder without anything going wrong. This of course makes them the most dangerous and that is only exemplified by the lack of a practical use.

This is one of the stupidest arguments I’ve heard in a long time. Sure, I could kill somebody with a can of Pringles if I tried hard enough. But the effectiveness matters. And a can of Pringles is not tailor-made to kill a large number of human beings in a short amount of time — unlike a gun. The goal of a can of Pringles is to give a mildly satisfying food consumption experience. The goal of a gun is to kill. And that’s why we regulate the latter but not the former.

What percentage of people that own guns in the US use it for something other than “having it just in case shit goes down and I have to unload it in someone’s face”? You may argue that hunters use it for hunting or things like that, but I find it hard to believe that he’d use an AR-15 for the job.

Many people enjoy firing at shooting ranges and such, for fun. It’s like shooting hoops, only not 😛. But yeah, it’s just a hobby for a lot of people. And of course there are people who like to collect various guns and don’t necessarily ever load them. Especially antique and WWII era guns.

I get why people like shooting automatic rifles at firing ranges. I get it. I don’t get why they need these rifles to have the power to kill someone. That just seems unnecessary.

If an automatic rifle fires bullets that are capable of killing, how would you remove the power to kill from them exactly?

Just curious what you meant.
