They apparently shot an entire movie before realizing the Solo directors weren’t very good.

I wonder if doing that and the relative non-caring by the media made Kennedy more comfortable with getting rid of Trevorrow.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Trevorrow was a very promising director after his debut and JW. Yes, it’s very possible it took two years to find out. Screenwriting is a long and complicated process, and it could definitely take awhile to realize someone just doesn’t have the chops to take the material where it needed to be. In fairness to Trevorrow, this is probably the hardest writing task of the trilogy for a variety of reasons.

Weird because the Solo firings are worse in pretty much every way imaginable. I’d very much like to find out what really happened there at some point in the future.

For now, ultimately the quality of the films will determine if Kennedy made the right decisions.

Since SW movies aren’t author movies anymore (unlike Lucas/Kurtz then Lucas/alone eras) but huge studio production closely validated by an army of shareholders which has elected Kennedy to represent them, I do believe that any director could write/direct Episode IX. You don’t need someone too good for the job. They should take Justin Lin to deliver the product (at least this time the action scenes could be good !).

That’s literally not true at all. Both Abrams and Johnson wrote/directed their films, and it seems like their were both pretty much given free reign. If “any” director could have directed Episode IX, they wouldn’t have just fired one. This is so obvious it hurts.

Anyone else stop reading posts as soon as Gary Kurtz is mentioned? Just me?

Because he’s so frequently used as a talking point in tiresome posts like that. When four out of five mentions are about how Star Wars has sucked since he left in the early 80s, he tends to be a flag to stop paying attention.

Yesterday “someone” tweeted at Collider Movie Talk and said that Rian Johnson had stated in some Japanese interview that he is not directing episode IX. If true, probably just means he hasn’t signed a piece of paper yet. The comment is total hear-say but have you guys seen / heard anything about this from a more reliable source?

It’s Abrams again, according to the official SW Instagram account.

EDIT: beaten to it.

Anyway, I’m fine with this. There are more potentially interesting choices out there, but I already know I like J.J.'s flavor of Star Wars. As long as he’s learned a lesson from the reaction to Starkiller Base and/or the story group reigns him in enough to prevent anything else like that, I’m on board.

having given myself a minute to calm down, i guess i mostly agree with you. I haven’t even seen what Rian came up with for 8 yet, so it would be wrong to think he would have been a better choice.

I cautiously agree with this.

Interesting. For the director, I think this is great news. For him being the writer? While I would probably not have wanted him to do VIII, it could be a bit better having to deal with the plot as Rian leaves it off. And in turn, dealing with the after effects of his own setup for Luke (for which he apparently did not have any kind of long term plan).

Edit:
googles “Chris Terrio”

… Oh.

I think the bigger issue is JJ’s perhaps unconscious use of weaponized intertextuality:

Well there go my hopes for IX. Abrams is the absolute WORST at endings and now he’s been given the ending of the trilogy itself.

No idea what to expect from someone that co-wrote a Best Picture winner as well as an enormous, poorly written failure.
