Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)

I don’t know precisely what compelled me to watch this; I dislike CG/greenscreen-heavy movies, and I no longer have any respect for Sam Raimi as a filmmaker. Perhaps I watched it 'cause I like James Franco. Perhaps I watched it 'cause I hoped the story would flesh out the wicked witch’s backstory and motivation, making her a more three-dimensional character. Well, if fleshing out a character means making them a jilted lover, mission accomplished. *rolls eyes*

The long and short of it: This movie was obnoxious, overbearing, overlong, and very, very trite.

5/10

Yeah as a Sam Raimi fan it kinda made me sad.

I forgot it was a Sam Raimi film. Drag Me To Hell is a great Raimi movie.

They even had some groups buy out the entire Theater, then ask for a refund, to ensure the seats cannot be purchased again.

Wow, sure that stops people from seeing the film but it certainly gives the box office a boost haha!

Not if they ask for a refund, so the movie doesn’t make the actual money, and doesn’t get reported to the Box Office.

Gosh, I didn’t read that properly!

Spider Baby (1967) - Solid black horror/comedy. Nice writing, interesting characters, fun movie all around.

No Country for Old Men (2007) - Loved the lack of dialog and thought the scenes between Brolin and Bardem were incredible but I’m not sure if the film landed thematically. It seemed like they were going for a Wild Bunch esque “too old for this; life is passing me by” sort of deal but it never really clicked with me. Regardless the cat and mouse game was riveting.

+1 I always loved this movie I don’t know why it never got much attention. When it came out critical reception was very positive I don’t know how it’s fared since though.

There’s campaign to downvote the film going on and others trying to counteract it: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/hollywood-is-losing-battle-online-trolls-992582

That is correct. They put those Turkish bots everywhere to downvote the film. They even had some groups buy out the entire Theater, then ask for a refund, to ensure the seats cannot be purchased again.

The Turkish government and lobbyists do this every year, when the Anniversary of the Genocide rolls around.

Turkey has released their own movie about World War 1, “The Ottoman Lieutenant”, starring Ben Kingsley.

Why would Ben Kingsley star in something like that?

The man was in Schindler’s List and played Ghandi. I don’t think taking a paycheck for something like Bloodrayne (I’ve never seen it) can be compared to government propaganda garbage that denies genocide.

The CGI and ending ruined Drag Me to Hell for me.

The CGI is bad, and the boyfriend is bad. But I laughed hard at the ending, it’s just his sort of schtick.

It’s not Evil Dead II but it’s better than people remember. It gets overlooked I guess because audiences now don’t know what horror comedy is any more.

I know what horror comedy is and I hated Drag Me To Hell. The cgi is terrible. Never at any point is it slightly convincing which is distracting and kills every scene. The characters and acting are all horrible. It isn’t funny. It isn’t freaky. It’s dumb and it’s dull and it looks like crap.
Cheers, everybody!

I thought the same thing when I first heard what they did. Then I found out the people were getting refunds.

Spider Baby (1967) - Solid black horror/comedy. Nice writing, interesting characters, fun movie all around.

Hmmm, sounds interesting, might have to check it out.

No Country for Old Men (2007) - Loved the lack of dialog and thought the scenes between Brolin and Bardem were incredible but I’m not sure if the film landed thematically. Yeah, it was great movie, especially the cat and mouse game between Brolin & Bardem. Bardem was a clever, philosophical killer.

Exactly, Kingsley played Ghandi & starred in Schindler’s List. His decision to star in the Turkish movie escapes me, besides the obvious lust of money. Germany helped the Ottoman Empire, and took notes what the empire did to the Armenians. Hitler even said in one of his speeches, “Who after all, remembers the Armenians”.

Here are some other movies regarding the subject:

  1. 40 Days of Musa Dagh (1980) - haven’t seen it yet, it is based on the 1933 book.
  2. The Cut (2014) - have not seen it yet.
  3. Ararat (2002) - directed by Armenian Canadian director Atom Egoyan. It’s a movie about a filmmaker making a movie about the Armenian Genocide. It feels like Egoyan’s other movies, because it always deals with families and their struggles.

4 star scale as always.

Murder by Death-pure classic fun that just ends much too soon. The LD is the same as the DVD.
3 stars out of 4.

Men in Black-revisited after finding the BD trilogy set for super cheap and plan on doing some other Sonnenfeld films for the heck of it. The film works well due to its spontaneity and character byplay. But it ends far too soon and feels half baked-much of which is explained by how the entire ending was changed last minute and budget was withheld for sequences until the studio felt it was worthwhile. Many of the CG shots stick out like a sore thumb. But it is far more enjoyable than 99% of what we get these days. 3 stars out of 4.

Addams Family-a lark that is fine but never really impactful. Nothing of much interest really happens outside what would have appeared in a cartoon originally. The design and sound mix is quite good and the actors have fun but this ends up as somewhat forgettable. It’s nice to finally see the movie that inspired the legendary pinball table I’ve played for years. And someone must’ve literally seen this and thought to copy it over as Casper in the 90’s. 2 stars out of 4.

Addams Family Values-Much better, more fun and a bit silly. Much more of a plot this time around which is a complete improvement. 2.5 stars out of 4.

The Devils
I waited for years to see Ken Russell’s infamous 1971 film, and I’m glad I did. I saw an Eastman studio scope print apparently of the UK theatrical release that quite surprisingly was in good shape and not faded. This is a supremely powerful film that should be seen by anyone curious as it really tries to depict the depths of human depravity in circles of power that existed then and now. It isn’t a great masterpiece as with every Russell film I find myself begging for more story and less over the top visuals. If there was more story and narrative this would be one of the great films. As it is, the performances are staggering, the visuals and cinematography hauntingly great, and the film is quite unforgettable.
4 stars. That the studio still refuses to release the film or its restored uncut version completed in 2003 is CRIMINAL. Particularly since Russell made the Director’s cut and was not able to see it released before he died in 2011.

Hated that movie. But I think the correlation between people who like Tarantino films and people who like Coen Bros films must be close to 1.
