TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released) — Page 29

I personally don’t see the need to do such a big shuffle music-wise with the “Kylo Ren Arrives at the Battle” track when I feel like it’d probably be easier and smoother to just put something else over Finn seeing the star destroyer and then leave the rest in place, but I guess maybe I’m nitpicking if it doesn’t bother anyone else.

Pretty much perfect. The changed music from the TIE arrival scene stood out to me but I think that’s only because I’m too familiar with the original score in this scene. Where did you get that music from btw?
And Finn’s line also stood out a little but again, I’m not sure if I would have noticed if I hadn’t known it is a redub.

The music is an unused cue that was posted on Reddit, there was a link to it on page 25. I’ll keep tweaking it a bit, I’m glad everyone seems mostly happy with it (but I’m thankful for any criticism of course)! 😃

I still find “those beasts” cheesy as hell but otherwise the audio editing is good. The music might be a little bit too loud and there is a jarring “clic” when Finn goes in the smugler’s ship. “They have found us” is near perfection, I don’t know how you could improve it. And gosh the sunset shot is so cool, glad it’s been kept.

This is what I’m thinking about for the first R2 scene. Audio is temporary, and if people like it, my hope is that someone with a 5.1 surround setup can do more justice to the sound.

For the second R2 scene, it would only require lengthening the shot of R2 waking up slightly and adding the final clicks and flashes of the backup data drive.

I know this version is all about accuracy, so are you planning to address scenes that have been horizontally flipped or the wrong hands used/contradicting placements? There are a fair amount of them.

Personally, I’m not interested in anything like that. It’s really about the SKB restructure in all its elegance, with a few subtle things in the same subtle vein.

This edit is shaping up to be the best one yet. SirRidley, you’ve done some great work! I know this edit is only to restructure the SKB shots. But I would love to see a version of this edit where Kylo wasn’t blatantly called out as Han’s son so early in the film. I feel it’s more powerful to be left at the end, just before the SKB fires.

Also, not to rock the boat, but I have to disagree with the comment made about “those beasts” I love it and am glad you are keeping it in.

Mostly agree with both points. I wouldn’t be sad if the Snoke lines about Han got cut, simply because I can’t imagine such a powerful entity caring about Han enough to learn his name. It just seems a little…beneath him, if that makes sense. However, I think it’s absolutely necessary that we know that Kylo is Han’s son at least by the interrogation scene.

I’m making some changes like that in my personal version that will be released later. Is there a list or something? I don’t know all of them.

I think there’s another edit that does this. For my own edit I was at least planning to remove direct mentions of the fact but you would still figure it out from Han and Leias conversations before the end.

No official list that I know of, but a few particular ones are the doctor’s hand when checking Chewbacca, Rey hiding from the Stormtroopers on Starkiller Base, the placement of characters when they are running up in the snow and Han introduces the idea to use the explosives, and Rey pointing on the Falcon and asking Finn to giver her an item. There are a few others, but I’d have to go look at the movie again.

My edit keeps his helmet on and parentage a mystery until the catwalk scene. Sorry, Hal, shameless plug 😉

Thank you, I’ll check these out. I’ve already flipped the “Rey hides” one and Kylo setting down his helmet in the ashes.

If those shots were flipped, it wasn’t an accident. If they weren’t, why change them?

To be fair the entire movie was made as it is on purpose, yet here we are. We’re just making a second judgement, and might find that in our opinion some shots work better if flipped back.

Given the restructuring of the film this project implements, the only way to remove Snoke’s identification of Kylo’s parentage would be to remove the first Snoke scene entirely. We wouldn’t meet him until a smash cut to after the interrogation scene. Even if it weren’t outside the scope of the project, it’d be a little tough to pull off at the same time as the other stuff.
But the nice thing is that this edit will be available to any and all whom would like to take or modify it further. That’s part of why I’d like to A) make it solid and seamless, and B) stick to the original focus.

I’ve cut some dialogue from the first Snoke scene so it ends like: “… aboard the Millennium Falcon, in the hands of Han Solo.” “He means nothing to me.” “We shall see.”

So it’s more vague.

But yeah, sorry for going a bit off track here.

Of course you guys are allowed to change whatever you want, that’s the beauty of fan edits. I try not to pipe in about changes I disagree with, as there’s no point, but I just wonder if you’re going at this one from the wrong perspective. If you’re unflipping shots to fix continuity, I think you should just keep in mind that when the editors flipped them they would have known that they were upsetting continuity, but were purposefully doing it in favor of something more important (like screen direction). If you think it’s better the other way, there’s nothing wrong with that, but I just mean you should consider why it might be like that in the first place.

I understand that this was what you were saying, it’s a good point, thank you. I won’t change things “just because” without considering how it will affect the scene.

Here are the completed R2 scenes, in terms of visual effects:

A final sound mix would need to include the sound of C-3PO walking away and BB8 sound effects, in addition to the soundtrack finessing.
