my memory isn't that bad, is it?
I have told all my friends about this for many years, and never once have I been believed. And I have never found evidence to prove what I know to be true.

I can swear on all that is good and holy and just that a long time ago, in a place far far away, I saw a version of Episode IV where Luke misses the grappling hook. He and Leia are gonna try to swing across the chasm, but he missed on his first throw. Everyone tells me that I am crazy and don't know what I'm talking about, but I insist. I know I've seen it, but it was so long ago and I was so young. Because, we have to remember, with as many versions we have from the Special Editions of '97 and from the remastered versions of '93 and the newest versions of '04 -- there were at least 3 previous VHS versions released during the early and late 80's. Somebody please help me!! I know I'm not crazy!!

Also, on the Laserdisc remastered versions of '93, there is a scene with the X-Wings that I think was added. I think actually, that it might be one of the first CGI additions ever put on screen. It is when the guy says to "Lock S-Foils into attack formation." I'm pretty sure that the original versions did not actually have anything happen, just somebody saying that over the radio. And with the '93 version, you actually see a few X-Wings open their S-Foils.

Just a couple things I have not seen commented. Am I right? Or totally of the mark?

I know nothing of the first thing you posted, but then again I didn't get into Star Wars until the THX Editions.

As for the second, the shot of the S-Foils is definetely not CGI, AFAIK it's always been in there.

Luke missing with the grappling hook never happened. It is a common rumor, though.

Rumor!!

LOL

I saw it with my own two eyes! More than once! Nobody told me any far-fetched stories, and I am certainly not making it up. Maybe my memory is wrong, but I'm not taking this from some story that someone else told me.
I can tell you that I am pretty sure that I saw the "miss" on television. I was living in either Minnesota or Indiana at the time, I don't remember when or where exactly. But I have seen it more than once because I remember thinking "There it is! Just like I told everyone! It's right there!" If I had been watching it on VHS, I could have had proof, but it was just a TV broadcast.

It was in the novel. Thats why a few people remember seeing it. Just like they remember seeing the spaceships crash into the DS shield in ROTJ. They saw it in their minds when they were kids and twenty years later it feels as though it was seen on a screen. It never happened.

As for the S-foils, them opening was in all versions. There has only been one visual change from 1977-1996, and that is the Episode Iv crawl.

Just like I can swear when I saw "Hannibal" in cinemas... and then bought the DVD less then a year later that it was missing a shot where they cut the brain!! It was the very first thing I noticed...

... but then... what do you know... it was never their in the movie to begin with. The mind plays tricks!

No real evidence of Luke missing with the grappling hook has ever surfaced in all the years people have claimed to have seen it. Same with the ships hitting the Death Star shield (which even I thought I might have seen at one point).

I'll pay 50 bucks to anyone who can actually provide hard evidence that either of these two Star Wars urban legends made it to film.

P.S. - People claiming to have seen the Biggs on Tatooine scenes in the film aren't even going to be considered.

Dang dang dang!
I did read the novel when I was a kid. So all these years, I've been wrong? I was so sure...

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming... Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Hmm. I also remember seeing Luke missing the first time, but not in the movie, but in a documentary, it never made it into any cut of the movie. If i'm right its possible you saw that doc to.

My 50 dollar prize still stands if you can produce the goods. Not gonna happen, though. I've seen nearly every documentary there is on Star Wars.

The wierd think is, I never read any novel about the original SW. But I do remind it was low/medium quality footage, about Luke trowing, missing, taking the rope back, trying again, crossing the ravain and then it takes them about 20/30 to get rid of that rope and move on.

Are you talking about the scene where Luke meets his three friends (Biggs, Cami and other person) at that place (Anchorhead or Tosche Station? I can't remember.) that was a rough deleted scene on the Star Wars: Behind The Magic CD-ROM? Or is this something else? (EDIT: I misread your question. No, I have never seen those scenes ever in the film.)

On an unrelated note, I will swear on my life that the first time I watched Alien 3, on a broadcast airing on CTV Television here in Canada in 1997, there is a short shot near the end of the film where one of the researchers goes up to Ripley after she's killed the alien and is talking to Bishop, and does some sort of test or something on her arm. Ripley looks at him for a moment and looks back up, mildly angry. I have never seen it in any subsequent versions, and that was the only time it was aired on that station. I am sure it exists.

I thought I remembered that scene as well from back in 1977. When I saw it again in re-release, I remember saying to my friend that that part had changed, and that I remembered Luke making one attempt, failing, and then getting it on the second try. Who knows, but I really believe that I remember seeing that on screen in 1977, as well. You're not alone.

I too thought that I remembered Luke missing with the hook the first time. However, in retrospect, I now believe that I saw this in a sneak preview which was shown many months earlier on the Bob Wilkins late night "creature features" show. I'm certain that the preview shown included the grappling hook scene, so it's reasonable to assume, given all I've read, that THAT is where I saw it, not during the actual viewing of the movie. Of course, I have no proof of that.

Another curious rumor that I have heard is that the STAR WARS logo before the crawl would have been solid in the original. Has anyone else heard that?

Bob Wilkins late night "creature features" show? If it had this "lost" shot, then it'd be awesome to see.

I'd never heard about the logo being a solid instead of an outline. Maybe some was confused with the first trailer, which had solid lettering instead of the final version of the logo.

Bob Wilkins was a mainstay for geeky guys like me on Friday and Saturday nights. I think his show ran for something like 10 years or more. His show was all about B horror/scifi movies, and showed an incredible mix of great unknowns as well as shlocky stuff. I remember when he announced that there was going to be this fantastic film coming out, with special effects like we'd never seen. And he showed clips that he'd gotten from somewhere. This was months before the summer of 77, although I can't say exactly how long before.

Someone's gotta dig this old Bob Wilkins show up so we can see. Just seeing any pre-release SW footage would be worth it alone.

I never noticed a version of ANH with no s-foils opening.

I did notice in the EpIII DVD that the part at the end when Obi-Wan tells defeated Anakin "I won't help you." Then and only then does Anakin say "I hate you!"
