Info Wanted: Has anyone done... The Theatrical Cut of THX-1138?

Thank you all for the information. The additions to the Director’s Cut honestly looked like cut-scenes ripped from Abe’s Oddysee. I mean, it’s Lucas’ vision and I can understand his motivation, but for him to then claim that the previous versions of the film “don’t exist anymore” simply because it doesn’t match up with his vision is just an ignorant statement to make. Preserve film.

Lucas is the worst for that. He’s not the only director to do it, but Lucas really does try to bury his old work.

A New Hope: The Reimagined Cut | SC 38 Reimagined + Rogue One + Hal 9000 + Adywan (V1.1.1 available, V2 on indefinite hold)
Time

This seems like a fun concept, editing together all the reinterpretations to make it look and flow like a modern film. My only advice would be maybe use the original crawl instead of the Episode IV one? I feel like the cold open intro makes it feel more like a standalone film. The Episode IV subtitle is a little jarring after that opening. The 1977 crawl would flow much better right after it I think.

Keep up the good work though, this is a very fun and interesting one indeed.

The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)
Time

Looking so forward to watching the trilogy back again once ANH is done. The Custom SE has quickly become one of my favorite ways of watching these films. Some other attempts to blend theatrical with SE changes usually have at least one thing that I personally don’t love, but every change in these edits feels perfect to me. The spirt of the original cuts remain, but with genuine improvements from the SE versions that only enhance the films and don’t take away their charm. They fall in line with the rest of the saga without feeling butchered or distorted. The original filmmaking is still there, but with enhancements that actually improve and don’t distract. You’ve done an incredible job Hal.

Info Wanted: Has anyone done... The Theatrical Cut of THX-1138?
Time

The Hybrid Cut by TM2YC is currently the best way to go with THX 1138. TM2YC focused on trying to use as much HD footage from the blu-ray as possible, while keeping the film cut to match the laserdisc. Only new effects that genuinely looked better were used, otherwise it’s the original effects. The footage cut for the blu-ray is from the Laserdisc and is not great quality, but this is something like 9 mins of the entire film, and it works quite well.

In terms of cuts of THX, there were actually 4 different cuts. The one most people call the original cut is actually the first reissue of the film. The actual original theatrical edit has never made it to home video. WB cut footage from the film for it’s first theatrical run, and George added it back after it’s post Star Wars rerelease. The other cut is the German and Italian version that’s only slightly rearranged and trimmed, but not super noticeably. I don’t think it’s known why though.

Parasite: Color and B&W version (Dead Project)
Time

Have you considered doing a slow fade to and from black and white? Sort of like what Park Chan-wook did for the “Fade to Black and White” cut of Lady Vengeance. If timed perfectly it could really elevate the visual storytelling of the film to a whole new level.

I don’t have the best skills or tools available, but if you want any help I won’t mind lending a hand where I can.

AOTC actually tries to have a mystery plot, which is a new and interesting direction for a Star Wars movie. Even if it doesn’t ultimately work, it at least tries. In comparison, TPM and ROTS are much more straightforward.

I feel like the step into new territory makes ANH the most compelling prequel for me personally. I think sadly it’s ambition is part of why so many people don’t look toward to fondly too. In my opinion RotS felt too fan service focused, and TPM was very much a rehash of the beats from the original movie. Weirdly enough the prequel and sequel trilogies parallel in that way. You could say they rhyme 😉

The Phantom Menace - Bobson's Theatrical Recontruction v2 (WIP)
Time

Another kind member helped me get a hold of this, and I watched it yesterday during my Life Day celebrations.

I’m utterly gobsmacked with how good this looks, and CGI Yoda in the theatrical cut is a dream come true. It actually makes it feel very in-line with HAL9000’s Custom Special Edition trilogy (which are my favourite versions of the OT). This will probably be my preferred way to watch TPM and I look forward to following any possible future updates this project.

Not sure which of the prequels is the best/least-bad. RotS is the easiest to swallow, but TPM has the actual story. And as for AotC, well, it’s cringier than TPM and only barely has more of a story than RotS, but it has some cool action scenes and the Obi-Wan part of the movie is kind of cool.

I’d argue that RotS is just as “cringe” as the other two, but hides it well behind slightly more competent direction and more lively acting. There’s a reason RotS memes are a thing. Most of Palpatine’s scenes are super hammy, some of the action sequences look really cartoony, most of the nods to the OT feel like they’re one step away from winking at the camera, and the dialogue is maybe even more tonaly out of place at times than the previous two films. If AotC suffers from underacting, then RotS suffers from a huge case of overacting. I know some people would prefer that, but it always sort of takes me out of the film.

Also TPM feels like too much of a singular story. Most of the film is set on Tatooine, and it mostly follows Qui-Gon’s POV exclusively apart from some Anakin scenes. That’s why The Battle of Naboo is so good. It finally shifts into the classic style of jumping around and showing all different aspects of the story. AotC stays more true to the OT format of showing the story from many different view points and even more of the villians’ POVs. RotS sort of does this, but it feels more flat since it’s mostly just Anakin and Obi-Wan’s parallel stories, and Obi-Wan is trapped in a video game style cutscene for most of that.

AotC is far from perfect, but it balances out a little better out of the three for me. TPM and RotS are two different sides of the scale, but AotC feels somewhere in the middle and makes it the least offensive, at least personally. It feels like the film that’s closest to classic Star Wars even if it misses that mark a lot of the time. RotS felt like it was trying to be too “edgy”. The Clone Wars finale is a better example of how to emulate that classic Star Wars tone but still tell a much darker story.

2006 GOUT : The changes to the OT films & general 2006 GOUT DVD discussion thread
Time

The GOUT trilogy was very frustrating to me. On one hand, I have a fond memory of being able to view the films in their unaltered state again. I grew up with passed down VHS copies from the 80s, so even though I’m a child of the 90s, my first memories of these films were the non special editions. Even though there are one or two SE changes I admire, nothing compared to being able to watch the films the way I did the first time around.

The huge negative was that infernal letterbox aspect ratio. As a teenager I’d watch those discs on my xbox, and the options for viewing them on my TV were as a tiny box in the middle of the screen, zoomed in (which completely cut off the subtitles for the alien speak), or horribly stretched. It was always really annoying to me that I owned the unaltered films in a format I could watch on my TV again, but not at all the way I wanted to watch them.

It really makes me thankful for projects like Harmy’s Despecialized Trilogy and Project 4K77/80/83. Without the great people from this site, TheStarWarsTrilogy and elsewhere preserving the past so beautifully, we’d be stuck with an option so tedious, that the original cuts would probably get lost to history eventually.

My super unpopular take is that not only is RotS the worst and most soulless of the three prequels, but the best prequel in my opinion is AotC.

Most disagree, but for whatever reason Clones is just the film that feels the most in line with what I love about Star Wars. TPM feels weird and disconnected from the rest of the saga in tone, and RotS always felt like a string of boring conversations held together with video game style boss battles to me.

AotC, despite the sillier stuff, the overuse of CGI and the terrible romance, has some of my favourite additions to the Star Wars mythos. I always thought Boba’s origin fleshed out his character in a more interesting way than some of the other retcons, Obi-Wan finding the clone factory brought some of the mystery of exploring new worlds from the OT back, and the Battle of Geonosis feels like such an exciting and pivotal moment in the franchise.

In the same way I don’t understand the intense praise people show for RotS, I don’t get why AotC is SO despised by many. I feel like too many people get hung up on the bad stuff, but I would argue that it has higher highs than RotS, and feels like a much more intriguing story despite all it’s flaws.

RotS took too much mystery away from the OT and it was a little too hard to get invested in a story where you know pretty much every outcome. AotC on the other hand was the first time we ever got to see the clone wars in any capacity, and without it we never get The Clone Wars or Rebels.

TL;DR - I’m probably about to make a lot of enemies.

Project Ewok | Caravan of Courage & The Battle for Endor - 4K Upscales (Released)
Time

Just watched these back to back. Wow, just wow. I’m usually blown away by the work some people do on here, but this was one of those moments like watching Despecialized for the first time. I never thought this level of quality for these two films would be possible. I used to love these as a kid despite the cheese, and as much as the double feature DVD has given me a reliable way to revisit them in more recent years, this will be my preferred way of viewing them from now on. Thank you.

P.S. Would you mind if I used these as the base for an edit?

Help: Looking for... restored deleted scenes
Time

Has any of the projects restoring the deleted scenes from ANH been completed yet? Especially the tosche station stuff. I’m looking to make a fanedit that follows only Luke, and introduces everyone else from his pov, but was wondering who I’d contact about good quality versions of those scenes.

If such thing isn’t available yet that’s fair enough, but thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask.

I’m being constantly bombarded with requests from people to invite them to the SWT forum.

99.9% of the users making these requests have literally just signed up to OT.com and never posted or contributed anything to the discussions on this community.

As such if you are one of these people I’m just going to ignore your request.

I’ve been on here a while wondering how to get on those and I know better to annoy people for an invite. I think people hear about this stuff on reddit and decided to start seeking it out without realising what this community is all about.

SOLO - A subtler remaster of 'The Bold One' (unfinished)
Time

Would anyone be able to point me in the direction of where I could view “The Bold One”? Interested to see what work was done there, and happy to help with any feedback with this project. Very interested in the concept of having Solo’s colour-grading match up better with the best of the rest of the franchise.

Indeed, Tantive3+1’s proposal looks very nice, but is moving away from the theatrical version.

Well to be fair, so is this entire project with AotC and RotS. It isn’t so much a restoration of the film versions shown in theaters, it’s an edit that makes them look like film, an entire third version.

A Theatrical Cut on TPM with this version as the base would be the perfect combo.

I am genuinely looking forward to Attack of the Clones this way, because I have a huge soft spot for that movie, but always thought it looked too smooth and shiny.
