Proposed project: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV show)

Originally posted by: ShiftyEyesAs far as Season Five goes, the first half of the season is episodic, but after that, it comes together to tell one of the best arcs of either series, so it may not be too hard.

I would give that honor to season 4 of Angel. Or possibly season 3 of Buffy. The whole Circle of the Black Thorn thing felt too forced to me, and I was disappointed that the shanshu prophecy never really panned out. I also hated how the cyborgs (or whatever they called them -- I know automatons were always called "robots" in Buffy but I don't remember what they were called in this Angel episode) that attacked Wolfram and Hart in season 5 -- one of which was disguised as Wesley's father -- were never mentioned again -- I would really have liked to know where they came from, what their mission was, etc.

Ilyria is awesome, though. Amy Acker got to show a whole nother side of her that she didn't get to do as Fred.

The Phantom of the Opera Resynched (Released)
Time
It was indeed a labor of love. The Phantom of the Opera introduced me to the world of musicals -- and it wasn't even the original cast recording I listened to first, but a second-rate recording that came with a magazine about musicals. I fell in love with the music, and when my cousin played the original cast recording for me, I fell in love with the singing. When the movie was released, it was like a dream come true despite the subpar singing (and I'm embarrassed to say I saw it six times in theaters, the same number of times I saw The Return of the King and Revenge of the Sith in theaters though as a movie it doesn't come close to those two). And when I finally saw the stage musical on Broadway last year, I was in heaven -- or almost, because to be honest it didn't quite meet all my expectations.

Now, the recent movie of The Producers -- that's the way a movie musical should be made (and I know I'm going to get lots of argument on this). Great singing, great acting. Those are the things that really count.

As much of a fan as I am of Andrew Lloyd Webber's vision of Phantom, I am also a huge fan of the Phantom story in general and I would like very much to see a movie version based on the original novel by Gaston Leroux during my lifetime. No, scratch that -- I really hope I can make such a movie. And I've also been thinking that a TV series about the Phantom's life before the opera (perhaps partially inspired by Susan Kay's novel but not entirely) would be a great idea.

If I have time (and HDD space) during the summer, I might try reworking this using uncompressed sources, and re-rotoscoping the swordfight/fireball scene. (Any tips on how to improve that would be greatly appreciated. As it is, it's a lightsaber-like effect, cycling through the red-yellow palate to avoid a static look (not that it worked, really); how might I rotoscope an actual flaming sword (like the one the Witchking had in the extended ROTK)?

I know that frameserving original DVD-MPEG2 files using AviSynth would give the best-quality sources (short of converting them to uncompressed RGB AVI files) -- thing is, I made this edit with a resolution of 640x272, which is the resolution at which I encoded my source XviD file (with the black bars cropped away). Does anyone know of a way to change the dimensions of a Premiere project (so that I can just substitute my source files with the anamorphic DVD files) while still keeping all the edits intact? (I don't think Premiere allows you to change the dimensions once you've created a project.)

Actually I was trying to make that "speediness" intentional, as the tremolo that starts the Phantom's version of "Angel of Music" bleeds into Christine and Raoul's last words (at least, that's what I remember) and thus I would have been unable to separate the two tracks short of fading out and fading in. I was kinda going for a cheesy look in these few seconds or so -- like a tape being fast-forwarded. Perhaps it didn't entirely work, I don't know. But it does look better now than in my earlier drafts.

I saw the American remake before seeing the original Ringu, and I must confess that I also like the American version more. It seems, however, that those who saw the Japanese film first enjoyed it more. If you like the premise of the story, however, I strongly urge you to read the original novel "Ring" by Koji Suzuki, on which the movie Ringu was based. It's the first novel in a trilogy, I think -- at the time I read "Ring", the rest of the series wasn't available in an English translation, but that may have changed now so I should look it up again. I also have a box set of the original Japanese Ring movies (Ringu, Rasen, Ringu 2, and Ringu 0) still sitting in my drawer unwatched -- I should really get to that soon. (Maybe I'll have an idea for an edit! Who knows, hehe.)

I haven't seen any of the Japanese sequels, but I must say that the American Ring 2 was a travesty (though it was directed by the director of the original Japanse Ring -- what was he thinking?). The only thrill I got out of it was seeing Samara crawl out of the well in a manner that reminded me of Gollum in the LOTR movies.

Season 1 of Angel is a little too episodic for my taste (as is the last season), and may prove problematic for a movie (what to focus on?). But Doyle definitely plays too important a role in the beginning of Angel to kill off so quickly.

I'll post more thoughts on Buffy once this crazy week is over. (I've been spending far too much time on this forum already, instead of finishing the tons of work that I have to get done before the semester ends.)

I guess the decision whether to include Amy or not depends on how far I plan to take this -- she does play an important role in season 6 in seducing Willow to the dark side, one might say (incidentally, a more convincing transformation than Anakin's!), but her inclusion would mean also including the episode "Gingerbread" from season 3, where she turns herself into a rat, which would take up a lot of screen time that could be better spent on Mayor-Faith story arc.

Thanks for your thoughts, ShiftyEyes.

I agree that the main focus of Season One should be the Buffy-Angel dynamic and the finale. I think it may be possible to leave out the Annointed One entirely, since like you said he doesn't really play a significant role in the end, other than leading Buffy into the Master's lair (which she could probably have found on her own, like she often has a knack of doing).

That entered my mind also -- one way to do it would, of course, be to just ignore all the scenes where the credits appear, but sometimes important exposition does occur there, so the only thing I can think of is zooming in so that the credits are off screen (which would definitely detract from the quality of those segments, but I can't think of any other way to do it except hand-painting over the words frame by frame).

I intended to include it in the torrent, but for some reason I had trouble uploading a multiple-file torrent to Pirate Bay (it kept saying "Error2", whatever that means).

Do you know any good place I can upload PDF files?

Here's a high(er) res copy of the cover art. (Unfortunately it seems like PhotoBucket recompressed it to a smaller file than I uploaded.) I only designed covers for small (CD-sized) cases because that's how I distributed it to my friends.

It does seem like a really formidable job. I probably won't get started on this for awhile, but it's definitely on my "hope to do" list.

Definitely episodes like Hush won't be included, but Hush is also the episode when Tara and Willow first combine their powers, which is definitely a crucial moment in Season 4 -- and that's just one example of what I mean by not being able to isolate plot elements like that. Maybe I will find a way to do it, maybe I won't. It may turn out to be simply impossible, but I refuse to believe that...

Hi guys,

I have for some time been thinking about editing each season of Buffy into a movie. I realized, though, that it would be a great challenge because Buffy is such a well-written show that almost every episode in a season ties into the main story arc of that season in some way, and it may be extremely difficult to isolate those plot elements without having to introduce many peripheral demons and such that have no place in a, say, 2-3 hour movie.

So . . . I would be interested to hear any ideas any of you may have. (There's GOT to be a bunch of Buffy fans here, somehow!)
