George Lucas leaves Lucasfilm

I'd like to think George respects Frank Oz too much to do that to Original Puppet Yoda (tm).

Love the wizard of Oz, but Stuart Freeborn deserves a great deal of credit too.  and I can totally see lucas personally no longer caring about his contributions.  All the apologists and sycophants will say "well, yoda was lucas' creation, stuart freeborn was just realizing his vision!!!!!!!!!!" - which of course is totally bogus.  Like every one else, he went far above and beyond the call of duty.

Bill Hunts story, im not so sure how much I believe - especially the part that they decided against it because the cgi dind't match the dagobah sets and lights.  It would be completely out of character for lucas to give a damn about even the most basic standards of filmmaking quality.  Besides,  there is nothing to stop him from replacing puppet yoda with a shitty cgi version and then just re-releasing ESB version 1.4 with a different but still shitty version.

Count on ESB/ROTJ yoda being replaced - and us finding out from leaked info (just like the NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! and the ridiculous letterbox 2006 release)

Will it turn the tide? not sure.  With the clone wars and other things, bouncy lightsaber yoda is becoming more and more the definitive image.  But I can gaurantee demand for de-specialized editions will skyrocket even more than last year.

It's funny how this paper-thin, feeble talking point has become a thing lately. At least I've seen it popping up elsewhere lately, like in the comments section for articles about the 35th anniversary. ("[INSERT MOVIE NAME] had two versions that weren't always sold simultaneously at all points in history. Why isn't anyone mad at [INSERT DIRECTOR NAME]?") Is it the same guys or was there a memo? Although this is the first time I've heard GODFATHER being awkwardly crowbarred into it, so points for originality there I guess.

thats the game apologists play when all else fails.  another example is "this [insert movie] has fart jokes...why don't [insert fanboys] make a big deal about it".  or "how come no one ever complains that [insert movie] has a bunch of cgi". Its eaqsy to discxredit.  its downright hilarious when they compare the PT to a masterpiece.  yeah, ok so TPM has one tiny thing in common with Kurosawa's Ran - now, do yourself a favor and list all the differences.

Yes, it is a talking point.  Thats lucas' primary (but not sole) motivation to giving "interviews" at a relentless pace.  almost all talking points can be traced either to LFL or to someone from TFN thats eventually given legitamacy by LFL ("the space battle in tpm is supposed to suck..so when you watch them in order, they get better and better!!!")

anyway,  i dont think lucas selects kathleen kennedy unless she swore in blood she would never even ask him to release the OOT.  The real party question is...are there going to be anymore changes?  anything that will truly inflame the masses? (i am fully expecting by the 40th anniversary, puppet yoda will be replaced with a cgi).

"... passion and care that I've given the films over the years."

.....

But the passion and care is there, right?

lucas had a reputation for completely lacking passion and care for filmmaking going back at least 30 years - for about 15 of those it was a pretty well-kept secret.

kinda perplexed about kathleen kennedy.  i thought she already had her own company with husband frank marshall?  and she was branching out to producing other films, so she wasn't just a the luckiest produce in the world who had spielberg as a director.  wonder why she would take this.  Maybe the article explains, but i refuse to read another 'interview'.

I'd be curious if other people turned this gig down.

doesn't matter.  No OOT, expect nothing to change.  wouldn't surprise me if it ended up that was part of the deal.

The recent Clone Wars cartoon has brought into play the Dark Saber:

hmmm..now this is interesting. How long has this been in the EU? I remember on TFN before ROTS, there was a leaked report palpatine would have a lightsaber.  someone had the idea that it should be a black light saber and it was immediately shot down by a lot of fans and I couldn't understand why.  I thought it would have been a great idea and it seemed a little out of character that PT fans would go against it.

funny stories.

i heard about the office break in.  the version i heard was steven williams broke into lucas' liquor and ciagr cabinet and was smoking cigars and drinking brandy!! bwaaaaaaaaahahaahahahahaha

its interesting the punishment was no work on star wars movies.  I wonder how much of a draw that was back in the day?  arguably the most anticipated projects in the movie business.  think of what kind of talent they were possibly able to recruit on that alone?  I know things have chnaged since then and much of the work is strictly short-term and contract based.

I remember reading some story about how george harrison was a fan of monty python because he felt that after the beatles broke up, the 'spirit' left the band and went into monty python.

thinking back to some of those great lucasarts games from the 90's - it almost seems like after lucas stopped making movies in the 80's, the 'spirit' of the LFL movies and type of entertainment they provided were truly reflected in a lot of those games - like monkey island, full throttle, fate of atlantis...wasn't Zombies ate my neighbors a lucasarts game?

lmao,  another 'interview'.

didnt he already say he was retiring earlier this year?

[sigh]  if he still has the final word on what gets published for home video, then this doesn't really mean anything as far as the OOT goes.

his relentlessness in spouting off the whole 'Im really an art house filmmaker'  is truly astounding.  what is it now - 40 years?

and did i read that quote right?  he wants to make experimental movies...but not show them!?  um..ok, why tell us this?  last I checked, all artists create works with the intention of communicating to an audience...any audience.

i dunno - i'd be curious - Criterion markets many 'art house' movies, right?  If one were to get a list of all the directors that has a criterion label, I'd be really interested in seeing how many of them gave interviews like this over a 40 year period and went on and on about how they are 'art filmmakers' or they make 'art movies'.  I dont think i've ever really heard another filmmaker talk this way.  I know of plenty of true independent filmmakers that introduce themselves by talking about what their values are and what approach they take..but then they usually move on and discuss...well, you know, the movies.  lucas, of course, cannot do this.

Give him credit for this - he knows the importance of branding and how the power of images, talking points, propaganda and unrelenting repitition builds a brand.  Why bother making art-movies when all you have to do is talk about it for 40 years to get sycophants and apologists to believe you.  No different then 10 years ago when he was pounding home the whole 'im a visual filmmaker' - never mind the fact that all filmmakers are 'visual', thats why they have this thing called cameras.

I wonder if he's ever had an 'interview' where he's guiding some dumbass media stenographer around skywalker ranch and he's had the audacity to say "you know, I have a ton of money, but really deep down im a working-class, blue-collar kinda guy"

Popularity of the Star Wars movies, according to twitter
I retweeted the OT with my personal and the SWR account, I'd like to think it helped.

sure is interesting to see AOTC come in last.  10 years ago, there was hype that SW was on a comeback.  and LightSaber yoda was probably the only pop-culture moment the PT had until 2005.

always had a feeling that AOTC would fade with time but I didn't think it would sink this low.

without soliciting feedback, my only theory is that the pathetic love story killed the movie for everyone.  and with 2 movies that wasted time, people reallly got mad at AOTC because there was no buffer room to build the characters.

The other thing thats interesting is how overwhelmingly fast it took the OT to get these retweets compared to the PT.  Its not even a contest.

I don't have twitter, but I assume that little kids during the time of the PT would make up a good bulk of twitter users.

This asshole is on the board of directors for The Film Foundation, (how is that even possible) he knows very well what he's doing, I wonder if the other members do. It's impossible to like this person nowadays, he is so full of himself, it's ridiculous.

lucas being on the film foundation is no different your average pyramid scheme being a member of the Better Business Bureau.

but again, it is encouraging that, slowly but surely, he is exposing the fact that his actions have noting to do with artistic integrity and everything to do with his own personal selfishness and childishness.

there better not be any truth to that rumor he took the director responsibilities away from anthony hemingway on red tails.  would love to see apologists spin that.

all that nonsense over the years about him fighting 'the studios'.  the studios are the good guys in the OOT story as far as Im concerned.  they (along with a hall-of-fame cast and crew) fought a childish, lazy, excuse-making liar who flat out refused to put any kind of effort in making a quality movie.

lucas can try as hard as he wants to convince everyone that he's one of these guys in spirit:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0907657/

he isn't.  he never was.

Its no different than vince mcmahon "going against the 'no fun league' "  and creating a fraudulent POS football league.  unfortunately, football fans are much smarter than lucas apologists.

hopefully more cast and crew will speak out about the OOT.  not just saying they would release it if it was up to them - but saying lucas is wrong and selfish (not to mention hypocritical when it comes to ESB and ROTJ)

By the way, this is a poster that was sold in the 90s sometime:

Though, while searching for that I also came across this more recent one:

... which actually makes Yoda with a saber look comparatively classy. So I guess it has to do with how it is handled as well. I still prefer the first, in terms of vibe, though.

 that looks pretty cool.

a lot of people like the ROTS poster, but i dislike how it shows yoda tucked in the corner jumping out with the lightsaber.  the yoda in the second image would have looked better.

The part where George says he didn't "experience" Star Wars like everyone else going to the cinema knowing nothing about it, made me think that's gotta be one big reason why he doesn't understand the importance of preserving the originals.

Yeah, I have just finished watching this and I thought the same thing.

George says that he is 'stubborn' and 'Obstinate'. Really ? I had no idea !

no longer watch or read any of his 'interviews' (primarily cuz his lying is downright repulsive and all his 'interviews' are the same old crap he always spews). so im relying on what other people said - which admittedly may or may not be the appropriate thing to do.

so is he saying its hard for him to imagine why it electrified everyone in 1977 or that he never really was aware how much people loved it?  if its the latter - well, he's full of shit.  If its because he was down in the trenches the whole time trying to keep the film together (which I believe less and less as time goes by), then - what baronlando said.

i find it hilarious he thinks its cute to admit being 'stubborn' and 'obstinate' .  and likely so does his apologists.

being obstinate is a pretty serious character defect.  so is lying and selfishness and refusal to form normal functional relationships with other people.

oh well, its a start.  at least he didn't play the artist card like he did before.  he's admitting the way he carries himself has nothing to do with artistic integrity.  maybe one day he'll admit the whole PT enterprise was just a fraudelent cash grab that would put any 'hollywood suit' to shame.

YouTube/Vimeo/etc... Star Wars video finds
Time

first we have a TPM 3D commercial in which the narrator cheerfully says "hurry up qui-gon, you dont wanna be late for the celebration"

now we have a dancing game in which you can play han solo dancing...in the carbon facility where he gets frozen and taken away...

video games have passed me by but I hear this kinect is pretty popular.  by why couldnt they make a lightsaber based game instead of another rip-off dancing game?

[sigh]

oh well...i guess just hope for that it'll introduce more people to the OOT and support the cause.
