lmao, to still air this documentary after everything thats been exposed since 1999 would be the equivalent of bob costas hosting a special discussing the summer of 1998 and talking about how magical mark mcgwire and sammy sosa were and what they meant to the game of baseball.

dang...blast from the past. funny, tony scott never had the career ridley did.

this movie was a huge deal back in the day (i thought it was overrated, but I liked Kilmer and the movie sure beats Iron Eagle)...surprised there isn't a whole lot of hype over the 3d re-release.

hmmm...wonder what impact top gun had on lucas when he was thinking about red tails 20 years ago.

just saw the half in bag. i guess I was wrong, lucas did go on his usual 'the studios are against me!' crap on that oprah show....and she fell for it - thinking this is the new color purple :(

and the apologists are spreading the talking points -"blacks finally have their john wayne movie!!" "its like those cool 40s movies, so it works that its intentionally bad!!!!"

good lord. To use a completely un-original cliche - the only color lucas gives a shit about is green.

some people are saying this is a surprise hit cuz it opened at #2 with $20 million. I don't think so. it was projected at $15 million by box office moj - so it exceeded that and I thought overall it would make 35-40 million. that still wouldn't recoup the costs (now Im hearing it cost $93 million)

however, there is one thing that still interests me...he insists EVERY SINGLE studio turned him down....does this include Dreamworks and his ol' buddy Steven?

was spielberg invited to a screening and turned lucas down?

3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED!

That poster never worked with me, the lightsaber is at too weird an angle, you can tell they just added it because they thought he needed one. How could you hold it and have it show up like that?

lol, aw man...now that you mentioned it...

hmm....maybe he held it like how the marines hold a cavalry sword [shrug] - but that would have been out of character for a jedi.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

dennis muren is great. absolutely deserving having hollywood walk-of-fame (the late stan winston needs a spot too).

he didn't do as much work on PT - maybe he could have convinced lucas to stick with costumes for the clone troopers.

its funny reading him mention the space battles. even in 1997, I thought the only changes that actually blended well and didn't look like they were shoe-horned in were the some of the space battle shots.

20 years from now these guys are gonna be like the 9 old men Walt Disney had.

r2d2 looks sad in that poster...

cant get over how terrible that poster is. all those characters combined have less screen time than natalie portman. cripes, the star wars radio drama had a better poster!!

if this poster was cobbled together based on marketing research then i guess even watto (the best native PT character) was not that popular.

IMO, this was far and away the best PT poster - only thing I can think of to improve it wouldm be have anakin and padme illustrated.

this was the image i had in mind when lucas first said the PT was going to be about anakin and his relationships, especially with padme. some people say the poster hasn't dated well cuz it looks like a twilight poster, but I think it nails what was supposed to make the PT compelling.

Even today, everytime I see it, I would like to get it. its too bad the love story itself was treated as a complete pathetic farce. :(

and if it was intended to be stupid and garbage, then why not have the poster reflect that?

[sigh]

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread

didn't know if to post this in youtube thread, yoda commercial thread or here:

there was that new r2d2 commercial during the playoffs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxhPEwHhG58&feature=player_embedded

i dunno, it wasn't dumb but it just wasn't funny either.

guess only commercials with vader are funny.

for all the TPM promotions -you'd think with the 3d gimmick, they would want to show pod racers.

man-o-man..i get lost for a moment seeing those vintage commercials.

[sigh] kids these days...anyone 30 and under just has no idea what took place between 1977-1983; it truly was an era for the ages. nowadays we have PT, LOTR, Matrix, shrek, twlight and avatar and pixar, but i would love to take a time machine and show kids a series of films that truly was popular and captured a generations imagination.

its funny mentioning that kid vader vw commercial (which I liked). no matter whats happened, the OOT is still the most storied saga in movie history. will never forget when watching AOTC in theatre...i could feel the audience getting listless and just half-watching. but the moment anakin told padme "I won't be long...." and you hear the force theme - just absolutely electric. everyone just sat up a little straighter. and ONLY because of the OOT.

[sob] man...now i feel like popping in harmys SW AVCHD just for old time's sake.

he's not delusional. control for the sake of control was always more important than artistic integrity and public enjoyment and availibility.

hypocrite? yes. and deceitful con artist. reviews seem to confirm my suspiscion that red tails is nothing more than pearl harbor/red dawn/delta force. he just wanted to use the tuskegee airmen as a gimmick to differentiate his movie with your average juvenile shoot-em up. whats great is most reviews are stating that the tuskegee airman do deserve to have a great movie and that red tails doesn't cut it. Lucas was hoping to label critics as anti-tuskegee and anyone that criticized the movie as racist and nobody is falling for it (well....except for the apologist sycophants). and people are now laughing at his bogus "im really an art-house filmmaker' nonsense.

It took 30 years...and sadly the desecration of a once-proud saga...but we are finally making progress. the academy can't vacate his irving thalberg award, but maybe perhaps digitally remove him from the footage of martin scorsese winning the oscar in 2007.

New Vodafone Ad featuring Yoda

commercial was supposed to be funny....but wasn't :(

not as embarrassing as those TPM commercials wih that stupid alien but still felt very lethargic

do people still say 'meh' on the internet? thats how I would describe commercial.

the vader energizer and VW commercials were better. there's supposed to be a new SW commercial with dogs, we'll see how that one is.

Lucas' Red Tails
Time

hmmm, I saw the banner ad on the main page.....so now lucas is going to have an 'interview' with oprah?

This 'interview' would have been sycophantic fluff as it were, but if this is her first trip to skywalker ranch, she is really gonna fall head over heals and feel like she is in Paradise.

this is a huge scoop for lucas, oprah has a huge audience even though this show is on that new cable network.

i doubt lucas will blab about studios and art films and star wars. he'll push the whole 'its a tribute to the heart and courage of the tuskegee airmen'.

what will be interesting is if he still pushes the nonsense about red tails being a 'landmark' and a potential 'turning point' for 'black cinema'. Try and bait Oprah into saying that the movie and the production reminds her of The Color Purple. As I mentioned earlier, I rolled my eyes at this and it appears scores of other people have also really taken offense to it and are on to lucas' act. sad really, he tried hard to push the whole 'studios are racist', but his naked (and disingenious) pandering and patronizing may backfire in a bad way. especially if the reports of the film being nothing more than another pearl harbor are true.

would also be interesting to see if the other cast and crew are interviewed.

George has had movie critic issues for a long time. There's a reason one of the villains in Willow is named "Kael", and a two headed monster is called an "Ebersisk".

siskel and ebert were 2 of his biggest advocates and loved star wars (although I think siskel thought last crusade was weak).

apologists like to point out that siskel stated in his 1977 review that the acting in star wars was forgettable, but they neglect to mention that in empire and jedi, siskel praised hamill, fisher and especially ford. he enjoyed watching the 3 of them grow and develop together.

had siskel been alive in 1999, he would have torn lucas and tpm into pieces. there was nothing he despised more than an underachieving filmmaker going after a cynical cash grab.

Lucas doesn't hate all his fans. He just hates the ones that don't kiss his ass.

actually he hates those too, but he's willing to tolerate them. what he does like is their disposable income. and thats the only thing he ever liked going back to 1973.

thats why it was critical for lfl to keep cascading the talking point "most important thing is story and characters" for the 10 years prior to tpm. if we knew the pt was nothing more than the police academy sequels, it wouldn't work.

Lucas' Red Tails
Time

funny, maybe... but not endearing to me - more like repulsive, which is why i don't watch (does he still feign contempt and roll his eyes when talking about 'hollywood'). these are all just to dispense coded talking points for the sycophants so be suckered in and frame arguements (in political terms, its called a 'dog-whistle' cuz only certain targeted groups can pick-up on it).

its no different then when he was blabbing on and on about how episode III was too dark and scary and no studio would dare make it cuz no one would watch it. riiiiiiiiiiiiiight

thats how it is these days with LFL. 30 years ago, lucas was a lazy ass and would just say 'don't worry, we'll take care of it in the editing room, lets just move on'. now, he is even more lazy and says 'i'll take care of it in the interview room'.

none of this is surprising. for someone who claims to 'not care' what the fans think, he sure always seems mindful of the fans that criticize him. apologists everywhere are hooting and hollerning over their hero 'going against the grain, stickin to his guns'. whatever.

someone mentioned that lucas went on the daily show and said red tails was 'the closest thing to episode 7' - unles he was asked, wtf was he even bringing star wars into the conversation !?

as for mccallum, I noted that he was silent so far, unfortunately it didn't last and we got to put up with his fawning again. and wtf does he mean 'he has now completed everything he wanted to do as a filmmaker (if you want to even call him that)'. i guess those 'art films' apologists have been waiting 40 years are not gonna happen. im shocked, shocked!

the fact we are hearing so much from lucas and about lucas instead of the remaining cast and crew just reinforces my suspiscion that everyone else was a puppet.

my preference would be to have the OOT, even if it helps him finance 'making' more garbage. but if lucas is not making anymore movies, great- cinema just became a better place.
