I bought all of the episodes on VUDU and I’ve been capturing them.
Unfortunately, there are two issues:
The little progress bar from my player is in the image for the first second of the capture. This is unfortunately unavoidable.
The intro is strangely in letterboxed 16:9.
I think we can address #2 by having someone (myself?) capture the 4:3 intro from a S1, S2, S3, S4, and S5 LD since I believe the intro changes in each season. I have a sophisticated LD capturing setup if someone wants to let me borrow the five discs.
What should we do about #1?
Jay: Can you add something like screenshotcomparison.com to the forum? Basically, just using something like an onmouseover event to swap image A with image B and vice versa.

What do you mean? Detail-wise this looks great, even grainier than a “good” Disney release. Colors are a bit meh, I agree… what is the filesize of this?

The Amazon WEB-DL is 1080p, has no logo, and fewer artifacts than the best HDTVrips around; better bitrate too.
And, of course… no terrible DNR like the BD.

Does anyone here have the old “blade.runner.1080i.dd5.1.oar” HDTV capture from 2006 or so lying around? It should weigh in at around 15GB. Thanks!
You could’ve just made this clear originally instead of referring to a restoration using a Technicolor print.
I don’t know what negative1 is referring to, but I know of at least one non-MVerta, non-“Team Negative1” Technicolor-sourced restoration underway.

Update: I can capture HDMI. Yay!
I just need to fix an EDID issue which shouldn’t be a big deal. VUDU SD streams come out at 480p, so I’m hoping to capture at that (losslessly) and then encode from there. Thankfully, my 6x3TB RAID0 is up to the job.
My capture chain will be: PS3 =(HDMI)=> Orei HDS-102 =(HDMI)=> Blackmagic UltraStudio MiniRecorder =(Thunderbolt)=> PC.
The live-action scenes were shot at 23.976fps and telecined: they can be inverse telecined. The effects shots were created at 29.97fps and can’t be inverse telecined: they can be decimated, but that leaves you with jerky movement. One can go ahead and deinterlace them, but the result will be a mess because they’re not really interlaced in the first place.
So the SPFX are 30p?
If this is the case, what if we used motion compensation to generate 4 intermediate frames for every group of five and then drop the originals? This would give us the 4:5 ratio we need without jerky movement.

The only issue left, I think, is figuring out what to do between each group of 4 because the lack of an intermediate frame there will result in its own jerkiness.
But that’s the problem: they can’t be successfully deinterlaced, because of how they were made.

That sounds good, and as there’s no need to hit a certain file-size, CRF encoding is definitely the way to go. As you know, values ranging from 22 to 18 (inclusive) are considered standard. In this sort of situation, my preference is for 16. Perhaps you could encode one episode with that value and see how it turns out.

What do you envisage as a delivery format?
I’m thinking just a bunch of MKVs with H.264 video and AAC audio.
And does anybody think that LFL could create a better version than Legacy?
Yes. Scanning right off of the negative and doing an accurate grade to an unfaded release print would destroy Legacy.
