Babylon 5 - Broadcast NTSC (4:3)? (Released)
Time

Oh, BTW, I discovered that I technically have an HDMI capture setup at home. I didn’t realize that an HDMI splitter I was using for legitimate splitting also strips HDCP and I also have a Blackmagic UltraStudio MiniRecorder.

I haven’t tested it yet, but I’m pretty sure it’ll work.

I also just discovered that the PS3 VUDU app lets you download streams to the PS3 HDD, so we can totally rule out internet connectivity issues during capture.

Could this not be accomplished with stream grabbing methods?

It most likely can, but I’d still need to purchase each season from VUDU and they’re going for $40 per at the moment.

If we can find four other people (including yourself) interested in this, then we can perhaps have each one send me the $40 and I’ll do the capturing, but I’ll do the first season with my own money as a show of good faith.

Would that work?

There must be some way of getting these from VUDU. B5 in 4:3 is really high on my wishlist. It’s frustrating that the episodes are floating about in various places but I can’t purchase copies of the wretched things.

The easiest way would be to find someone with a good HDMI capture setup. I’d be more-than-willing to do it, but I don’t have the money right now.

Hey, Apple haters! Here’s a challenge: I prefer working from one system. I need a proper Unix (preferably POSIX-compliant) system for programming that is also capable of running film restoration software such as PFClean and audio restoration software such as iZotope RX 5 Advanced.

If anyone can provide a single non-Apple example of such a system I’ll switch.

FWIW, poita and I are happy users of Apple products that we use to directly contribute to projects here. I guess we’re both brainwashed idiots, right?

Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released!

poita said:

The only thing you can do in this isntance is add a little noise to the image. This stops the stepped-gradient effect happening when you start adjusting things. The noise can then mostly be removed afterwards.
It isn’t perfect, but can stop colour banding from occuring when manipulating 8 bit files.

Idea: Preserving the original trilogy 2 - Drafting a manifesto

May I ask any questions about the quality of those prints for home video vs the 2003 masters?
Will we see one more home video release by any chance?

They’re far superior in some places (e.g., color and detail not wiped by DNR) and inferior in others (e.g., detail from the negative eclipsed by grain in the production of the release print).

In my experience they are far more pleasing to watch than the 2003/4 master, SE changes aside.

I don’t work for LFL, so I don’t know what they plan on doing re: home video releases.

But Chris Chan said that’s exactly what goes on there, he said that he saw it when he was presenting Sonichu to George Lucas for a film deal.

This my very well be, but my point stands that he need not have gone to LFL to obtain a 35mm IB Technicolor print. All surviving prints (with the possible exception of one) are in the hands of private collectors.

Estimating the original colors of the original Star Wars trilogy

From what we have seen from the Technicolor scans of Star Wars, there is some green tint, and DrDre has noticed a additional red tint, but in terms of contrast and saturation, the colors seem to very much match our other sources.

The two 35mm IB Technicolor scans poita has had done for our team have some considerable differences from our '80s Eastman dupe LPP scan, even when each is corrected to their respective print. As noted earlier, the techs tend to be more contrasty and are more saturated.

Question about Video Cable Quality
Time

Jp4195 said:

is it a decent model or is it more of a low end one ?

It’s simultaneously decent and low-end. Decent because it’s industrial, so it’s more robust than other players of its time, but low-end because it has the PQ of a low-end player.

Ultimately, it comes down to (1) what your goals are and (2) how much you’re willing to invest.

Question about Video Cable Quality
Time

Jp4195 said:

I was wondering what a really good quality RCA cable would be

You can’t do better than: http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/composite/index.htm

With that being said, the most important factor in getting a good LD picture is the player you’re using. LD video, as you know, is analog and not all players are created equal. An excellent composite video cable can help prevent factors outside of the player from having an impact on the picture quality, but it can’t improve the picture quality of a shitty player or a player that is out of alignment.

Also, LD video is stored on the disc in composite form. The s-video output on all LD players therefore uses a builtin (old and no longer top performing) comb filter IC. 99.9% of the time you’ll get better results with composite and an external comb filter, such as the one in your display.

For our beloved 1977 Star Wars, this does mean we can’t be 100% certain of the quality of the extant prints. Lucas obviously had the best one.

No, Lucas had to borrow a 35mm IB Technicolor print from a collector to use as a reference for the 97SE. This particular collector was fortunate enough to receive his print back from LFL when they were done.

yotsuya said:

the Technicolor prints are a bit off in a variety of ways. I’m thinking, since they were shutting down production in 77, that they are probably print control issues rather than fade issues.

The Technicolor IB process introduces color changes independent of quality control. IB Technicolor prints tend to have greater contrast, saturation, and are shifted toward green. They may be fade-free, but this doesn’t mean that they’re truly accurate to their source.

Something’s going on, can I smell yo dick?
Don’t play me like a fool, cause that ain’t cool
So wat u need to do is lemme smell yo dick (x2)

[Verse 1: Riskay]
It’s 4 oclock and I’m sleepin
It’s late night and u creepin
You coulda told me, “I’m leaving”
Now I know your out there cheatin
Why you gotta do me like that
When I call u don’t call me back
I’m texting u, like nigga where u at
That’s fucked up, why u do me like that

[Verse 2: Aviance]
I’m dead sleepin’, you trickin’
In the club with dirty foot bitches
My girl was there and she witness
She had a camera phone, she took pictures
You was on the dance floor grindin’
With a stripper ho named Diamond
You was flossin’ hard, you was shinnin’
Everything she drank, you buying
Fuck nigga you need to stop lying
Before I get mad and pull out my nine
You want a new bitch to fuck, then that’s fine
But don’t fuck hers, then try to fuck mine
You keep tellin’ me “you ain’t touch her”
But some keep tellin’ me you done fucked her
And I ain’t that bitch, you want to play with
Nigga drop them boxers, let me smell your dick

[Hook: Riskay]

[Verse 3: Real]
Hey, hey
Smell my dick? Wait a minute hold up
See that’s how a bitch get’er eye swole’up
And I don’t give a damn wat your homegirl seen
When I was in the club, what the fuck u mean

They ain’t got no bisnuz, eyein’ me like dat
You ain’t got no bisnuz, tryin me like dat
I wan’t even feelin Diamond like dat
I was wildin’, but I wunt clownin like dat

That’s allright, that’s okay
Gon head believe wat your homegirl say
A nigga like me, drink alot of liquor
Meet alot bitches, take a lot of pictures

I might break bread, with one or two strippaz
But that don’t mean u gotta pull ma zippa
Thinking I dick down the whole town
Even though I got dick to go around (round… round)

THX on 35mm Tech IB preservation - HELP NEEDED (work in progress)
Time

Spaced Ranger said:
“Coppola insists that THX was barely cut, but to Lucas, they might as well have chopped up the entire movie into little pieces.”

Our evidence and this quote seals the deal for me. THX was barely altered by the producers and GL made a significantly bigger deal out of it than was necessary.

Perhaps he continued with this fiction (and dialed it up!) when the film bombed since it shifts blame from him to the producers.
