Idea & Info: a Preservation of Alien Evolution doco?
Time
The Making of Alien Resurrection lasedisc arrived two days ago. As you may remember, there were two LD editions of this documentary - German and Japanese, in both cases it is a part of Alien 1-3 set (the same set released in France does NOT contain this bonus and the documentary is not available on any UK or US laserdisc). I chose to buy the first one, which is dubbed in German, and has no subtitles, while the Japanese one has in-picture text and English audio. Also, I prefer PAL over NTSC because of the higher resolution. And, most important, the German version was much cheaper (30 Euros incl s&h). Meedermow can restore the English audio track back later when editing the next Appendix, either from VHS or VCD copy of this documentary. For the first time we can even release something with two audio tracks.

The problem is that the man who made LD to DVD transfers for me in the past is not answering my emails. He also mentioned several times in mid-2006 that he is going to sell his LD players because he moved to DVD and possibly to BluRay. I am sending him one last email and I hope he will answer this time. Otherwise, I must lend the disc to somebody here. DigitalfreakNYC can't play PAL LDs. What about Meedermow?

Guys, does anybody have BidPay account? I need somebody who can pay for another Alien video in my name because the seller accepts this payment method only. Not a big deal, approx 30 USD.

Official Release Thread - Alien Appendix - Updated with #2 info (Released)

Hi T., you are absolutely right.
I am still here, but Meedermow disappeared somehow. He is alive, a month ago he sold few items on eBay. I guess we cannot continue without him and without Jonno, because we do not have some of the already prepared videos. I really hate the idea to start all the work again. Maybe I should write an email to them.
My hunt for that fucking Making of Alien Resurrection laserdisc is a neverending story and I am tired already. I bought two copies in the past 6 months and I still do have nothing. The first seller turned to be a thief and never sent anything to me, the second sent the LD two months ago but the logistic company returned the parcel to him two days before Christmas. They wrote to him that I refused to accept the shipment! Unbelievable. I never met a messenger from this company. And meanwhile, the friend of mine who always made the LD to DVD-R copies for me, decided to sell his LD player because he did not need it anymore. Thus when the guy sends the LD again to me (first week of January), I am without an equipment to watch it or record it. Bad luck?
Good news: I spent lots and lots of money to get two very interesting promo VHS tapes. One for Alien DC, the second for Alien 3. Both contain a trailer, a featurette and few short interviews. The second one also some behind the scenes stuff. Currently I am negotiating with a guy who claims to have the original U-matic tape Making of Aliens and he is able to transfer it onto a DVD. He also have some Alien War documentary (content or lenght unknown). Unfortunately he asks 50 dollars for the two discs and this is a bit more than I am willing to pay. Especially because there is no guaranty from his side. He can simply take the money and never send anything to me. We will see.

I hope he has one. He lives in the UK. I can make the DVD copy here (Czech Rep.), but the man who owns the required equipment is constantly busy. Finding a gap in his working schedule may take many weeks. By the way, his Pioneer LD player plays both NTSC and PAL discs. I hope Meedermow can do the work much faster, that is why I am offering the LD directly to him. This Alien project seems to came to dead end, and it is necessary to do something before it becomes abandoned.

Idea: The Thing(s) :)
Time
I checked the information above. There are the two versions only - the standard cinema/VHS/DVD one and the shortened TV cut with some extra footage, including few shots available in this version only. Nothing else.
Few days ago Universal released The Thing on HD-DVD. I guess the bonus features section comes directly from the current DVD edition without upgrading its picture quality. Only the movie itself got a new HD resolution. Can anybody confirm this?
I am still looking for the TV cut. Even low quality VHS copy will be appreciated. Does anybody have it?

I finally have Making of Alien Resurrection laserdisc on the way. It will be in my hands on Wednesday, I guess. Meedermow, should I borrow it to you? There were two LD editions of this documentary - German and Japanese. The first one is overdubbed in German language with no subtitles while the second one has Japanese subtitles and original audio. I decided to buy the German one, of course. The high quality video is what we need and any subtitles are decreasing its value. The question is: are you able to transfer the LD onto DVD and then add English audio from that pale VCD version I once sent to Jonno? If you do not own it yet, I can send it to you as well. This can be a challenge, you must change the speed a bit to plant the audio to the PAL video.

The CD press kit is useless, I am sorry. It contains only some 15 hi-res photos and one low-res trailer in mov format, nothing else. If you do not own Alien Saga DVD, buy it. If you do not own Alien Legacy, you can buy the bonus 5th disc separately. Look for keywords 'alien, promo, dvd' - currently 2 pcs for sale there. UK region 2 release in standard plastic case, blue-green cover.

Now I am totally confused. i just checked IMDb for some details and here is what I found in the trivia section:

The 1998 Special Edition DVD is 128 minutes long. The initial home video releases (MCA Home Video) also listed the 127-minute version on the box but the tape itself contained the 109-minute version.

It is a bullshit, right? There is no 128 minutes version on any LD or DVD. I never saw the TNT/TBS TV edit, but it must be even shorter than the official 109 mins release.

What is the rarest video in your collection?
Time
Depends on what "rare" means. Any officially released LD, VHS or DVD can be hardly rare since these are released in big quantities. Unless it is deleted shortly after the release and withdrawn from the market for some reason. If "rare" means that there is almost zero chance to find another copy of the same thing, then my rarest video is the promo VHS Making of Alien 3 obtained personally from the director. It is a working copy with a time counter running on the edge of the picture.

Otherwise, people from America could love some European or Japanese releases just because they cannot buy these so easy and vice versa. For example, Alien fans love the well-known VHS boxset called "the facehugger box". It was released in the UK in 1993 and if you live there, it is no rare item from your point of view. If you live in another country, you can still buy it through eBay, but you must spend a lots of money because it is pretty heavy and the postage fee is enormously high.
