Even GL might not get such a warm reception....

I'm kidding.............

GL as in Green Lantern? Boy were people pissed when he became Parallax...

...I think he meant George Lucas.... Just a hunch.

Anyway, I my heart definitely goes out to his wife and kids. It's the worst case scenario that you hope never happens, and expect it not to happen because, well, Steve was GOOD at what he did. Then his luck just runs out and two kids suddenly don't have a father.

Hot-damn, it's official - I am more of a comic book nerd than I am a Star Wars nerd. So much so that I forgot one of the most commonly used acronyms on here...but we can thank GL for that

Is Dune a good movie?

I think the movies are terrible. There is no substitute for the book. The videogame's awesome too, but about the only thing it has in common with the book is the sand dunes, spice and sandworms.
I think the problem here is in thinking that there IS a substitute for the book. There isn't. The idea isn't to consider the two movies (Lynch's version and the miniseries) a substitute for the book, but more like a supplement to it. Paintings of the same subject material by two different artists, if you will. Each will interpret it differently, and each viewer will further interpret that in their own way as well.

And MeBeJedi is right... a big part of it is just looking at it. I prefer looking at Lynch's version, even if the miniseries was a more faithful interpretation of the original.

Yeah, but the question is, is Dune a good movie? and I'm flat-out just saying, "no, it's not". It doesn't stand on its own as a movie, and it doesn't distill the basic essence of what Dune is. All it gets down pat is some of the visuals (which isn't hard, what with sand and all that).

Which is why I seriously don't want to try and learn the language.

The language, in the grand spectrum of languages, isn't actually all that difficult to learn. The fact that you aren't using or pronouncing English letters in foreign ways makes things unbelieveably easier. And it rarely deviates from the rules. A very logical language, all things considered.

'Desu' is for all intensive purposes, a verb meaning 'it is'. 'Deshita' is the past tense of the same verb, meaning 'it was'. 'Deshoo' is the future tense of the verb, meaning 'it will probably be'. And so on and so forth.

Silmarillion - Tried reading it...not my cup of tea. Just couldn't get into it for some reason. I enjoyed some of the back story on Sauron and the Elves and such, but I put it down after those chapters.

The Silmarillion is unfinished. Therefore, it lacks that polish and cohesiveness. I personally found it a real chore to read, but not bad looking back on it. Not sure I'd read it again, though. Being that it has a slow building plot, few characters that continue throughout the entire book, and no real hero, at least not one who is in the entire book, I don't see how anyone can do a mini-series with it.

I gave up on it half-way through it, nary a week ago. The best part is the creation myth at the beginning. I can't imagine the Silmarillion being achieved without a ridiculous amount of CG going into it...

As an Australian, I would say that he is perhaps a little less popular here than he is in the US. Strangely enough, we only got the first season of his show on free-to-air TV, and then nothing. When I was in the US, I saw him on Animal Planet all the time. But everyone in Australia knows him, for sure - and we even imitated him from time to time, on TV shows and in day-to-day joking around.

But he was pretty much the face of Australian tourism, and while we were sometimes annoyed that our whole country had come to be associated with his exaggerated 'ocker' accent and generally crazy antics, we were also proud to have a daredevil tough-ass representing us as well. He has done a lot to raise awareness of wildlife around the world, educating people about the dangers of the bush. He has also done a world of good for Australian tourism, and he did seem like a really top bloke. News of his death has dominated the media over the last day and a bit, and people all over the country are mourning his death.

I dunno man... Everyone keeps saying 'of all the things to kill him it was a stingray' as if he went out like some kind of punk. But it's not like he was killed by a garden snail, it was a friggin' stingray! He got stung in the chest by a stingray, man!!

We're not saying a stingray is a 'punk' death, but that it's ironic he spent so much of his life with snakes and crocs, but what ultimately killed him was a totally unrelated animal from a different phylum. I figured if I he ever did get killed by an animal, it would be a snake or croc.

I was the one who said he went out like a punk, and I suppose those are strong words - but I really think even he'd have preferred to go out against a giant croc.

Sure a lot of ideas were recycled in the O-OT, but name another story or movie after 1970 (I picked a random year, I'm sure you could go back even further) that didn't borrow ideas from someone else. There hasn't been a completely original story in some time. What makes new stories that rehash old ideas look like they're fresh is the way they're presented. Lord of the Rings is a perfect example. It wasn't the first fantasy story and it wasn't the first story about a ring. It was the first story where the quest was to destroy the ring instead of to simply find a magic ring (I'm getting this from the documentary, so it may not have really been the first). That's what made it fresh and original. The only other thing that was new was calling halflings Hobbits (which I believe Tolkien copyrighted). Everything else was a rehash of old ideas.

That's what the whole point of Hero With a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell (which he cites as a heavy influence in Empire of Dreams). There is no new story under the sun, and it is our duty to tell and retell these myths and legends to future generations...

Two children.. they're not orphaned though...

It is ironic... I guess I should say something nice about him... um... he valued animal life (but not human life)... no... um, he was an entertainer (with no self-respect)... no... he was a good father... hmm... no... he was a father... um,... I know... he was a beautiful baby.

And I think that whole baby thing was way overblown. He knew what he was doing and the baby was in no danger.

How ironic that without the help of France, Washington and his rebellion might have failed, meaning no USA and therefore no Captain America...

I know, that crap only floats in the US. And let's not forget the Statue of Liberty - the symbol of all that is holy about America and superheroes.
Exactly. My wife (who is American) didn't even know that the statue was a gift from the French. I thought it was common knowledge (and I am English).

That's crazy. Although we found out about the Abu Grahib prisoner abuse/torture scandal in Australia about a year before I saw it on American TV for their first time! Not really related, but it's crazy how some of the things we take forgranted as common knowledge aren't always common to the countries involved...

Case in point, I just saw footage of Steve Irwin misspelling 'G'day' on an autograph (he wrote 'Gidday')!

BANG! Crankey!!", and when I get here, I find out he's DEAD!

This is not the first time something like that has happened with me... This is really creepy...

Crankey?! LOL! It's 'crikey'!

I nearly went postal hearing everyone mention it as they left the carpark today. Almost everyone is going to the pub to drink to him.

Of all of God's creatures, he had to go out like a punk to the humble stingray. Surely he could have died at the hands of a dinosaur or something...Ironic? Maybe. It is sad though, a day after Father's Day a child is orphaned, and by gosh, he'll have a lot of videos to watch when he's older - of his father nearly getting killed all the time.

Australian tourism will probably never be the same again. And Americans will have to come up with someone else to bug Australians about.

Yeah, I have to say, I loved The Last Samurai. It's so confusing watching it in Japan, though - you can never get the perfect combination of Japanese with English subtitles and English with Japanese subtitles (that is to say, it's impossible to satisfy both audiences at once...).

For those familiar with japanese culture, the mere fact that we see Tom Cruise as an american fighting on the side of the shogunates during the Meiji Restorarion is absolutely bizarre.

To say the least.

I am familiar with Japanese culture, and I saw it with my Japanese family at least twice and we all loved it. I was opposed to the idea when I saw the trailer, but I think it really highlights something about Japan even today.

Did you see the "Memoirs of Geisha" or "Memories of the Geisha' or whatever it was called?

The first one was right - nah, I was extremely put off by the fact that they used a Chinese actress to play the Japanese main character...

Some more news on TDK from IGN:

At an edit bay visit for The Prestige, the upcoming thriller set in the world of turn-of-the-century magicians, we got a chance to ask Batman Begins helmer Christopher Nolan some questions about his upcoming Dark Knight project.

Speculation continues to circle about the sequel to Batman Begins. Heath Ledger has signed on to play The Joker, but other casting and story elements have been constantly in question, and various Hollywood personalities have been rumored to be involved. However, the air was cleared temporarily by Nolan.

The director had one comment for all of the questions asked, which included queries about Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Penguin, Ryan Phillipe's involvement in the project and Sean Penn's inclusion as Harvey Dent. The director simply said, "No truth to any such rumors. Always interesting ideas."

Nolan will begin work on The Dark Knight when The Prestige wraps. The film, which stars Batman actor Christian Bale, in addition to Hugh Jackman and Scarlett Johansson, is in its final stages of sound editing and will arrive in theaters October 20th. Stay tuned for to IGN for more details on both films, an in-depth look at the sound editing visit and an insightful Christopher Nolan interview, coming soon.
