The Arrival [spoRv] BD-25 (Released)
Time

After A LOT of time (too much, indeed) I'm back to work on The Arrival; as I was not happy with the previous color regrading attempts, I decided to start from scratch; now, apart obvious contrast fixing, I've tried only to remove the pink blanket of the BD, and it seems I reached a good compromise; of course, grain plate is present like in the past, as it seems to increase perceived details very well.

You can see a link with screenshot comparisons in the post #2; feedbacks are welcome!

Hmmmm...the snow shot is always tricky so I'm just gonna focus on screenshot comparison #2 & #3 for now.

It looks like the colors are too cold now.

Before you decided to start from scratch again, how did the colors of your "final" version look like? Can you post a comparison (same frames, Original Blu-ray vs old "final" version) ?

Okay, here is the update ......

To keep the flow of info I took time out of my schedule to hook up the VCR and preview the tape. There was NO capturing done.

The time frame for each loop is 25 minutes a piece. The segment begins with TV promos about reactions to the film and a trailer. The second part of the segment is a short "making of" that goes through a few sections of production.

That is all I did and saw.

I hope this quells some of the curiosity for now.

Thanks

Thank you for the information.

Sorry about my pm. I know that you don't have time right now to do the capture and upload it. But I thought that it would take maybe one or two minutes to check how long one loop is. Of course I respect that you only want to send Andrea updates.

Regarding the loop; that's great news...the reactions to the film part is definitely new material. 25 minutes sounds very promising. I guess that the Making Of part contains new material, too.

The other two clips:

So I watched your clips quite a number of times in order to compare.

Well, now I'm not that sure about the new settings anymore. It looks to me like

there's too much yellow now. It worked to eliminate the pink tint during the

snow scene but for other scenes?...hmmmm.

Maybe it's only my impression because the difference on the split screen is

pretty big? Looking closely at the split screen snow clip you can see that her

hair has a yellow (and slightly green?) tint.

So are you giving it the green light?

Not yet, sorry... I decided to use a completely different color matching method, to get rid of the artefacts DoomBot noted, present also in the snow shot; the new one is more conservative and less aggressive than the old one, but result seems more natural.

Here you are the split screen test clip (25mbps) - left BD, right setting 2:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/dceq61

as you can see, the new setting (called, guess what? setting 2 - what a fantasy, eh?) seems to avoid the "wrong" colors - e.g. in the bd the snow is pink first, then violet, then blue, while in setting 2 it remains more or less white.

With this, I don't want to say that the BD color grading is wrong or right, but only that I like most setting 2's grading.

Now I'm going to encode the previous test clips with this new setting; I'll post them ASAP; meanwhile, take a look at this last clip and let me know what do you think.

Oh yes, that got rid of the pink color. Nice job there. Let's see how the other test clips look with that setting.

Yes. But this time I encoded the last two clips at 10mbps; hence, maybe you could note less grain, if this is the problem... i've done it to upload (and let you download) clip faster, as I think I reached a good result with grain, but still not sure which saturation setting I should use.

So, focus first on the saturation; then, if the last setting is good, I could make another test clip, this time using an high bitrate setting - 25/30mbps, that will be used for the final release.

I think it looks good! So I'm looking forward to the 25/30mbps test clip.

I didn't like the version that much where you lowered the saturation. It's lowered too much in my opinion.

So, what do you suggest? Half way between first clip and desaturated one? More toward desaturated version? Let's say that first clip is 100 and desaturated one is 0, let's state what do you think could be the right one, and I'll encode it to watch it in motion.

Any feedbacks from other users?

So if the '50/50 mix + grain plate' clip is 100 and the desaturated clip is 0, I'd say 75% .

It is a side effect of BD correction... I could always leave the BD "as is", even when using 50/50 mix; it will regain some details lost in the shadow, but the contrast will be overall not correct IMHO...

Here you are the difference:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/64629

in my calibrated TV, the increased contrast outweight the tiny shadow details lost; what do you think?

I guess you're right.

Not that I forget: I didn't like the version that much where you lowered the saturation. It's lowered too much in my opinion.

The audio commentary will be added, as the PCM soundtrack, and maybe the AC3 one as well.

That's awesome.

*maybe* the KinoWelt DVD extras are the same of the laserdisc, probably with better quality

So are you gonna purchase the KinoWelt DVD in order to compare the special features?

Yes, definitely I'll use grain 2! I'm waiting to gather the necessary files to start to work; it will be a movie only project, though, until someone could provide the extras found on KinoWelt DVD; I also thought to release the movie on one disc, and extras (when found) in a second one.

You don't want to add the audio commentary and the special features from the LaserDisc edition???
