That’s not being subtle, it’s being lazy.

I beg to differ. The things I’ve noticed are very subtle and not the sort of thing you want to rest a major plot point on. The points are too subtle and too few and most people don’t even notice them. And a lot of people don’t even try once they decide the PT are utter trash. How many OT members have seen the PT none or once and yet have very strong opinions of it? Many have seen it many times and some have even grown up with them and have completely different opinions.

I grew up on prequels and, no, they’re not subtle at all. For example, Anakin is virgin-birth-space-Jesus, but this Jesus also murders kids later so even the least subtle of images is fundamentally broken.

Ok, could someone tell me why they had to reboot Spiderman yet again. Why couldn’t they just tie the most recent series to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

If you mean the “Amazing” movies, it’s because they kinda suck. But I’ve been worried about Homecoming suffering a similar fate due to Too Much Tony Stark, but lots of critic people are liking it so I guess I could be wrong. Which would be great, I would love to be wrong.

I thought Harry Potter was wholesome family entertainment?

And this movie actually was fun, wholesome entertainment for a while. They were chasing around some cute little CG things and general hijinks ensued. Suddenly, about halfway through the runtime I estimate, we see a woman preparing to beat her son with his belt, and then after a strange (possibly anti-semetic?) charicature alerts the magic police of the presence of the hero group, they get arrested and sentenced to death by very gruesome means, but the executioners enjoy every second of it. They escape, of course, but man, it was hard to watch.

And, again, Johnny Depp is in this movie, and he is scum, so suddenly everything bad here fits a bit too well.

Other than that, I did like the the main hero characters (and I can have a good time just looking at Eddie Redmayne for a while). I liked a lot of the designs of various things and places as well. It’s really a shame, there are good things here, but they can’t escape the bad taste left by the awful parts of the movie.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)

I wanted like this movie, and I did for a while actually, but I spent most of the last half or so feeling uncomfortable.  Between the child-beating subplot, and the sadistic execution scene, and other bizarre bits of “why?!”, there’s a pervasive grossness to this movie that I couldn’t ignore.  O, hi Johnny Depp suddenly appearing in the finale to top off this gross cake!

I wanted a fun fantasy flick, but this was draining.
