I’ve only seen Dune. It sucked, but I appreciated some of the style, so it didn’t ruin Lynch for me or anything.

Dune fails as a David Lynch movie and as an adaptation of the novel. It’s almost impressive.

Don’t let that put you off reading the book, or (assuming it’s good) seeing Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming adaptation when it materializes.

It’s long overdue for Peter Jackson-style big update.

Denis Villeneuve (director of Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, Sicario, etc.) is making the remake. Word is it’ll be two movies. I can’t wait!

I think you need a minimum of three four-hour length films to do Dune justice, but we’ll see.

I wonder if six two-hour films work then, or would that require such radically different pacing and structure than appropriate for Dune that it would not work?

O, I had already read the book, and quite love it, and I’m excited for Villeneuve’s version.

What about books? Those are artistically designed to be books, but are adapted to film regardless. Are all movie adaptations to be ignored on principle?

This is not the same thing. Adapting basic stories to different mediums is a subject that has nothing to do with this conversation.

How? And who says the story adapted is basic? That ignores the nuances and thematic depth a work might have, much like how a movie can ignore such depth or enhance it.

I think it started when he butted into a conversation about 10 pages ago by saying that someone can’t do something because God is real.

Or something.

EDIT: Yeah okay I looked back. 8 pages ago mfm told me not to worry so much about the existence of God and of my eternal fate, to which Chryon said “that would be helpful if there was no God, but there is.” To which, naturally, people wondered how he was so sure, and we have spent eight pages about mysterious evidence that may or may not exist.

The only reasons The Last Crusade “must” be a trilogy capper are

  • the title is Last (but the following word is Crusade and not Adventure or Movie or whatever so it doesn’t even matter)

  • the final shot is a literal ride into sunset

Just because KOTCS ain’t great doesn’t mean Indy’s story is inherently a 3-part one.

Of course everyone knows that the Star Wars series has reached a clear end with The Last Jedi.

You could at least make a joke that makes sense.

It does if you actually read the post he quoted.
