DESTROY ALL JEDI: The unfinished Tarantino-inspired prequel edit

I feel like this movie needs a purpose in the grander Star Wars saga. In a hypothetical universe where this edit was the prequel trilogy we got, what kind of twist could happen that would re-contextualize the Original Trilogy? Some great truth that would be revealed that would make you watch the originals in a new and exciting way?

Using a looser definition of twist, here are some ideas:

-Obi Wan turned Anakin (GeekyGlasses); Adds weight to Luke’s training, and proves Yoda and Obi-Wan to be fallible. (You already mentioned it, but here’s an argument for it, and also GeekyGlasses did it first, or at least before this)

-Anakin is a clone of Palpatine (Jason LaJoie); Turns Vader’s redemption into commentary on free will, that Anakin is not destined to be like Palpatine.

-The Obi Wan we see in the Originals is a clone of the Obi Wan we see in the prequels, and Vader is a clone of Anakin, Palpatine cloned them both to be dark side minions, but OB1 turned to the light; IDK lol it’s kinda cool

Additionally, if you wanted to be a little more meta, and aim the twist to people who’ve already seen Lucas’s prequels, you could make Palpatine a legit good guy, and Sidious an entirely different character, or even just using Palpatine as a puppet.

Edit so I don’t double post: Are the subtitles gonna be burned in or on a file? Would you be able to give the option?

Those are some very interesting ideas to consider! Thank you! I do want to have a surprise in there for people who have already seen the prequels.

The subs won’t be burned in.

In the original trilogy Obi-Wan tells Luke that he hasn’t gone by the name Obi-Wan since before he was born. In the prequels we got this is a blatant lie.

To remedy this there comes a time-skip at the end of Act II, after Anakin falls to the darkside. This is also an intermission. This timeskip is about two-years, enough time for Obi-Wan and Padme to go into hiding under pseudonyms, and enough time for her babies to be born.

In order to help convey this, a little bit of narration might be required. Problem is- I don’t thing I have a very presentable voice. Think of Hateful Eight, where there are those two moments of narration. If anybody at all would like to help with that - shoot me a PM!

In other news, I’ve finalized a structure of the edit. All that’s left is to edit and write it. Unfortunately that’s the hard part. After I’ve got a presentable version I’ll send out workprints to those who want to see em’.

I’m really digging your idea man. If you don’t mind me making a suggestion, I also think it would be interesting if you were to use some genre music in certain places as well. Tarantino occasionally does this in his own films. For Bill’s death scene, he uses Ennio Morricone’s track “The Demise of Barbara and the Return of Joe” from Navajo Joe. At least one Morricone track is almost a MUST if you’re going full Tarantino.

I was already planning on using his music 😉

Another suggestion I really wanted to throw out here would be the use of Toru Takemitsu’s powerful and haunting score for Akira Kurosawa’s Ran. I think something like this could fit well with the Rumination scene or when Anakin falls to the dark side. Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood also has a pretty haunting soundtrack. Just some thoughts though!

I will look into that! Thanks for the suggestions!

Thank you NeverarGreat for the suggestion, but I don’t think that I’ll be using that idea. I definitely won’t show the Anakin’s involvement at the temple, though. 😃

Damn, I missed it, but now I really wanna know what it was. 😦

Anyway, glad you liked the suggestion! They’ve got some good stuff to choose from - Phyllis might be another good choice (from the same album, actually).

Here’s a hint: another common Tarantino actor besides Samuel L. Jackson will make an appearance, and not in the background mind you.

JEDIT: For the bar scene, Blue Monday by New Order is going to be used.

I think that Darth Lunar’s dialogue from that scene is pretty much perfect, but I feel bad just taking it. I also fear that if I don’t use their lines mine will just be poor imitations of them!

Music suggestion: The Force by Lettuce.

Feels right out of Kill Bill, but never been used in a Tarantino movie. And, you know, the title.

Oh my God this is exactly the sound I wanted! Thank you!

JEDIT: If you read what I originally wrote here, don’t spoil it for others!

Since Tarantino loves using Samuel L Jackson, why not imply that Windu turns into Vader?

That way you could still have the suit and the Vader hints if you’d like.

I don’t know how that’d be executed, but it sounds lovely!

I also feel like the Vader footage, if it’s present and not implied to be Anakin, would be confusing.

Perhaps Anakin’s turn is entirely Obi-Wan’s fault, even if he didn’t mean it? Maybe Anakin was doing fine and then Obi-Wan recommended that he talk to Palpatine about something, introducing both of the characters. Palpatine senses potential - maybe his decades long scheme can finally come to fruition with Anakin as his enforcer.

When Obi-Wan confronts Anakin on Mustafar, he pleads for Anakin to return to the good side. Anakin then offers Obi-Wan join him - give him a place in the new Empire. Obi-Wan rejects him.

I don’t know what to do about the twist?

Is the new dialogue good?

I’ve wanted to portray a sense of playfulness among characters. With Obi-Wan and Anakin caring for each other but still quipping. Does the new dialogue achieve this?

And does the chase joke land?

Do you have a preview clip for the chase joke? I think it sounds great. I might even use it myself.

It’s at the end of the second, longer preview.

JEDIT: Are people not watching past the opening credits?

How soon is this gonna come out?

I’m not sure. The actual editing process will be relatively quick. What I’m doing is editing the movie first, adding in music and removing it etc., and then afterwards I will actually write the subtitles. While I’m editing I have an idea in my head about the purpose of each scene and what the characters will be talking about, but the actual writing will be done near the end.

The dialogue is better than the actual prequels. Nice work.

That’s the easy part 😛

JEDIT: Does anybody have any suggestions for the bar scene’s music? I want to have the music be diegetic (actually playing in the world). Keep in mind that I don’t want too many songs in this to just be from Tarantino’s movies.

DESTROY ALL JEDI: The unfinished Tarantino-inspired prequel edit
Time

A few weeks ago I watched Darth Lunar’s The Blackened Mantle and it changed the way I look at fan-editing. Not only was it emotionally engaging, it actually made me feel emotions other than boredom!

This was entirely due to the superb Japanese voice acting and the brilliant dialogue changes. This got me thinking, “Why don’t I make my own version of this?”

And so DESTROY ALL JEDI was born!

////////

My list of changes:

Non-linear story structure
This is done both to pay homage to the films of Quentin Tarantino and to provide better flow and emotion to the story. For example: the first scene in the edit is Anakin’s immolation. This sets the tone that this film is a tragedy.

No John Williams score
This is also done in order to achieve a Tarantino-esque feel. I have made sure to match the song to the tone of the scene.

Re-written dialogue
This is done for obvious reasons.

Maybe:

No spoilers!
Vader won’t be named and the suit won’t appear in this movie. Leia won’t be mentioned either.

////////

Soundtrack:

Way To Fall - Starsailor
New Beginning, Part 1 - L.A. Noire OST
Misirlou - Dick Dale & His Del-Tones
Blue Monday - New Order
Man with Harmonica - Ennio Morricone
Jungle Boogie - Kool And The Gang
Little Darlin’ - The Diamonds
The Braying Mule - Ennio Morricone
Norme Con Ironie - Ennio Morricone
Lonesome Town - Ricky Nelson

I want as much criticism as possible! Please tear apart my new dialogue!

This edit will be relatively quick to put together, I just want to slow down and take my time with the dialogue.
