Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)

Hi slark,

Have you had any trouble with the official links of the ESB 2.0 MKV or AVCHD as posted on tehparadox?

Well, as I often the case, I posted just a little too soon!

Looks like third time was the charm.

I extracted from the RAR files (again, downloaded from Usenet, and yes, it passed CRC) but this time I immediately ran it through tsMuxer TWICE: first to change it to another format (M2TS), THEN to Blu-ray. THIS time it worked just fine.

Odd that the first two times I extracted it - to different drives - it yielded a conversion error in EXACTLY the same place (at 1 minute 52 seconds into the film).

I’ve had this experience before - where tsMuxer encounters an error in an MKV - but often, if you convert to an interim format, you can “filter out” the error.

Thanks for the responses, BTW!

A note to anyone intending to D/L the 19.7Gb MKV of 2.0 from a.b.test (posted almost a year ago):

I’ve downloaded this - a couple of times - and according to the PAR, all files check, no errors. However, when extracted, video freezes at 00:01:52. Tried running it through MeGUI, MKVMerge, and Meteorite to no avail. Clearly, the file was bad BEFORE it was RARed, so unfortunately, this D/L was a bust.

I got the 720p AVCHD of 1.0 (from a.b.starwars) as a “consolation prize”; that checked out okay and seems to play well.

Just a heads-up to anyone intending to D/L from Usenet…

Info: Recommended Editions of Disney Animated (and Partially Animated) Features
Time

They really ought to consider a seamless-branching release of Fantasia; that way they could satisfy those who want both (or either) version(s). Where’s the great difficulty in that?

Frankly, I don’t care for the “Roadshow” version. All that’s really added is that Deems Taylor (errr… Corey Burton) describes “what you are about to see” for each segment. (“Ummm, yeah, dude - I have every intention of watching it and seeing for myself. So if you’d kindly STFU and let’s get on with it, shall we?”)

Song Of The South - many projects, much info & discussion thread (Released)
Time

The 16mm capture is more complete, but the version posted on the newsgroups was a WMV. I wrote an AviSynth script for it:

DirectShowSource("Song of the South 16mm 1080p.wmv",fps=29.97, convertfps=True)
Trim(204,0) tfm(order=1).tdecimate().converttoyv12()
ConvertToYV12().crop(226,0,-226,0).LanczosResize(720,480)

But try as I might to clean up the color, it didn't satisfy.

The 35mm copy - which was posted as a DVD - had much better color, but suffered from damage, particularly at the end of each reel. (There was about 30-35 seconds missing from one of the Br'er Rabbit sequences.) I filled-in the latter with the missing footage from the former to fill in the gaps. My splices are clean, but I'm sure a better editor could do more with it.

Doc SaLvageD: The Fan-edit of Bronze! (Released)
Time
The chapters and chapter titles for this film were gleaned from the LaserDisc release of the film.

Chapter 1 - Opening Logo:
No change.

Chapter 2 - Main Title; Fortress of Solitude:
The first and most important change in this chapter is the replacement of the "Doc Savage March" with the "no vocals" version from "The Fantasy Film Music of George Pal".
The first of three "twinkles" in Doc's eye has been removed. In the first two versions of this re-edit, the offending frames (6 frames for each "twinkle", BTW) were exported to a series of BMPs and an un-twinkling eye was cut and pasted (from a "clean" frame) into each. However, without the twinkle, the close-up is superfluous, so it has been removed in favor of an extension of the medium shot to compensate. A dissolve was added in place of the jump cut from Doc to a snowy horizon which left the viewer with a lingering "after image"; this change also diminishes the obviousness of the backward footage used to accomplish the aforementioned medium shot extension. Also, with the twinkle gone, the corresponding triangle strike in the music seemed unnecessary, so it was removed.
The letters "U", "S", and "A" in the name "JOHN PHILIP SOUSA" have been changed from red, white and blue to yellow. (The task was simplified by the use of a Paint Shop Pro script to act on the series of exported bitmaps. There is no corresponding change to the closing credits as they are presented as a "roll" and a similare approach would be problematic.)
The "Fortress of Solitude" banner over the doorway of Doc's igloo has been cropped out.
The shot of the rocket was shortened to skip the silly "fish" thing.

Chapter 3 - The Fabulous Five:
Long Tom's "short circuit" was removed. To make up (somewhat) for the abruptness of the resulting cut, reverse footage was used.
Doc's minor stumble while rising from the lotus position has been edited out.

Chapter 4 - New York City:
Throughout this chapter and the next two, much effort was made to minimize the fact that the actor portraying the South American Indian assassin is all-too-obviously a blue-eyed Caucasian. His close-ups were eliminated, but some medium shots were problematic to remove so they remain.
Removed close-up insert of Doc's face from scene where he is pulling bullet out of wall and replaced with close up of hand. (Doc's teeth were not clenched in the insert, but they were in the flanking shots!)

Chapter 5 - Bad News for Doc:
Removed Renny's "Hi Doc" line (for cleaner intercutting).
Removed Doc's "I picked up your thought waves..." line.

Chapter 6 - Pursuit of the Gunman:
Removed the assassin turning to fire on Doc, Doc's subsequent duck into the stairwell, and Doc shooting his pistol at the assassin. This was done for cleaner intercutting, NOT to eliminate the one instance in the film of Doc using a gun!

Chapter 7 - Doc's Problem:
Removed Monk's "We know that sound by now" line. Also removed the word "buddies" from Monk's line about fighting together in the trenches.

Chapter 8 - Dogfight:
No change.

Chapter 9 - Somewhere in the Caribbean:
Removed Borden's "rest in pieces" toast and everything from Captain Seas' "I started out in a sideshow..." line to the end of the chapter. Dissolved the end of this chapter into the beginning of the next.

Chapter 10 - Deception of the Deed:
Cut Don Rubio answering and talking on the phone for use in the next chapter.

Chapter 11 - Too Much to Drink:
Removed Don Rubio sitting in giant crib speaking on the phone with Captain Seas and replaced it with the shot of Don Rubio on the phone from the previous chapter. (This shot was reversed for better effect.)

Chapter 12 - Doc's Good Example:
The cook drooling over Doc (after swatting the two young maids for doing the same) has been eliminated.

Chapter 13 - Flying Snakes:
No change.

Chapter 14 - Pleasure Cruise:
Edited out the waiter licking his lips in anticipation of Johnny's drink order. (Replaced this with a shot from a few seconds earlier in the scene.)
Removed Karen's "Chow!" line.

Chapter 15 - The Last Supper:
Removed Monk's hiccup reaction after Seas' informing the men that the meal was their last.

Chapter 16 - Village Stories:
Removed the first of several musical references to "La Cucaracha" (hackneyed if not completely inappropriate).
Removed Doc's second "eye twinkle", using the cut and paste method described under Chapter 2.

Chapter 17 - Jungle Safari:
Removed two shots containing Don Rubio's giant crib.

Chapter 18 - Setting Up Camp:
Removed "hungry as an ape" exchange between Ham and Monk. Also removed Doc whistling "La Cucaracha".
Left intact the singing of "La Cucaracha" in the car: it is less conspicuous in this context and trying to remove it would cause a problem with Mona indicating their approach to her village.
Removed Ham and Monk interacting with the girl in Mona's village.

Chapter 19 - Danger Ahead:
The second of three "Doc Savage March" cues were removed from this chapter. To do so, it was necessary to re-edit (and significantly shorten) the trek to the 'Edge of the World' to fit the available non-vocal musical segment.

Chapter 20 - The Edge of the World:
No change.

Chapter 21 - A Pool of Gold:
Removed Captain Seas' "law of the jungle" line.

Chapter 22 - Elixir of Death:
Removed Monk's exchange with Chief Chaac.
Re-edited so the Fabulous Five untying their hands seems like less of an afterthought.

Chapter 23 - Have No Fear, Doc Savage is Here:
Monk's "Have No Fear, Doc Savage is Here!" (perhaps a bit too energetic for a guy with the life sapping out of him) has been replaced with a quieter acknowledgement of Doc's arrival.
Removed hard subs indicating fighting sytles.
Replaced more musical references to "La Cucaracha" (with mixed results).

Chapter 24 - Nature Seeks Revenge:
Removed Doc's third (and last) "eye twinkle", again using the cut and paste method described under Chapter 2.
Removed medium shot of Don Rubio covered in gold.
Changed/removed some musical cues.

Chapter 25 - Doc Savage Rehabilitation Center:
No change.

Chapter 26 - An Urgent Message:
No change.

Chapter 27 - End Credits:
Replaced the last of the three "Doc Savage March" cues (again, replacing it with the available non-vocal musical segment). For the balance of the credits, a section of the "Doc and the Girl" track (from "The Fantasy Film Music of George Pal") was used.

Doc SaLvageD: The Fan-edit of Bronze! (Released)
Time

After two months and three distinct versions, I have done as much as I believe can be done with this film with existing sources and materials. Here’s a snippet from my NFO file:

<div class=“PostQuote”>Are you a Doc Savage fan or George Pal fan or a hero/superhero fan - or just a
movie fan - that saw the 1975 “Doc Savage” film and came away disappointed?
Well, Have No Fear - “The Doc” is Here! He put his nose to the grindstone for
two months and now is pleased to (noselessly) announce that this movie has
finally gotten the re-edit it has needed for over thirty years

This is a labor of love from someone who’s long felt that George Pal deserved a
swan song without a cheesy male chorus. Check out the “Changes - by
Chapter.rtf” file for a comprehensive listing of the improvements made to this
version of the film, and ENJOY!</div>

Though I know that most of you guys prefer distributing through torrents or RS, I’m an old Usenet guy, so I’m in the process of posting this to alt.binaries.dvd. It’ll take me a couple of days at my sad <50K/sec upload speed, but hey - that would apply no matter how I 'strib it. Maybe some kind soul will grab it from the newsgroup & seed it? (If not, I will, but again… SLOWWWWWLY…)

I will post my “Changes - by Chapter” file in a reply here for the curious…

Thanks to all of you guys for the inspiration!

Song Of The South - many projects, much info &amp; discussion thread (Released)
Time
Not to be a stick-in-the-mud - you guys did tremendous work on those covers - but I don't think SOTS fits in with the "Disney Treasures" line of product. To my knowledge, Disney has only put 2 feature films in DT collections, "The Reluctant Dragon" and "Victory Through Air Power", but both of those appeared as part of collections of (arguably) "wider" scope ("Behind the Scenes at the Walt Disney Studios" and "On the Front Lines", respectively). Seems to me that SOTS would only fit then under the auspices of a larger "collection"... (I shudder to think of the ideas some of you guys could come up with! ) Anyway, I always thought that the "Disney Classics" series was where this film belonged - hence the "frame spine" I added to the sleeve Doctor M posted above. (My "tweak" of a found artwork/sleeve...) When I came up with "VERY LIMITED ISSUE" (in small letters at the top of the "frame spine"), it gave me a chuckle...

Of the two main artwork themes, I prefer the colorful one (from the UK VHS). Not that I like the color so much (it really isn't a good representation of the color in the film, to be sure!) but the kids look more like themselves in this image (except for Bobby Driscoll's hair looking blonde). I'm not even sure that was really Luana Patten in the "walking over the hill" picture; sure doesn't look like her...

Perhaps I'm sharing stuff here that you guys already know, but I thought this post from 2004 on the "Velocity Reviews forum was interesting...

To save you the trouble of following the link, the poster ("unclejr") says:

The Hong Kong SOTS LD is the exact same film transfer as the UK PAL
VHS tape. In fact, if you press your pause button while playing your
DVD, you will see overlapping still fields -- a tell-tale sign of a
PAL-to-NTSC transfer. Also, the film runs a few minutes shorter than
the NTSC-mastered Japanese LD -- another indication that the HK LD is
a PAL-to-NTSC transfer.

Of course, the phrase that caught my attention here was "overlapping still fields"... Can it be that Disney themselves are the culprit here? Why would *their* PAL-to-NTSC be f-ed up unless their PAL master was bad? (In fact, why wouldn't they have done a new TC straight to NTSC?) Sounds like the 2006 BBC broadcast was from this same fatally-flawed master. If so, shame on Disney (well, *further* shame, anyway) - and I guess that puts the kibosh on the Doctor M's contention that there might be a "pretty decent looking NTSC telecined source floating around somewhere". (Sorry, Doctor M - just don't want you to have to be Indiana Jonesin' around the 'net looking for an artifact that's only a legend...)

Well, just tripped over that and thought I'd FYI - if it's "old news", so be it...

Just finished downing DrGonzo's up of Mentor's PAL cap from RS, and looking forward to Dr. M's NTSC. I know it's heartbreaking to have to "throw away" picture information, but you'll have to be content with having made any kind of silk purse from this sow's ear...

ROTFLMAO...

That's GREAT! But you're probably right... something more "neutral" would wear better with successive playings of the disc...

First thought that comes to my mind is the artwork from the early-70's(?) movie poster: Uncle Remus, the two kids, Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox & Brer Bear coming over the hill, with a very simple background. In fact, that artwork is featured on the entrance page of SongOfTheSouth.net - which is still there, BTW! (A post or two in this thread led me to believe it was taken down. Indeed, when I tried to access the site, I couldn't, but when I found a link to the aforementioned entrance page, there it was!) Anyway, there's plenty of artwork (albeit at varying resolutions) to be found there...

Doctor M, your restore24 results look pretty damned awesome if you ask me! Considering the flaws in the source material, the quality is phenomenal. I've had the CBEE version for a couple of years now and it's nice, but I've been on the lookout for something better. This is, undoubtedly...

Thanks for all the time and effort you're putting into this...

Howard The Duck - special edition (Released)

Oh, just for the record, guys...

"CFQ" stands for Cinefantastique magazine - for my money, THE genre movie magazine. Kind of a "serious older brother" of Starlog and Fangoria (launched in 1970, it predates them both), but not as "trade" as Cinefex. For a kid who was weaned on Forry Ackerman's "Famous Monsters (of Filmland)", CFQ was a natural progression, and I have the first 25+ years of the magazine complete, in binders...

I should have scanned a cover or something just so the uninitiated would know what they were reading... OOPS!

Was this sampled off vinyl?

The OST files I gave dark_jedi were downloaded off a newsgroup in January of last year. According to the comments in the ID3, they were "Ripped by NMP3 Ripper" (whoever that is). They are 192/224 VBR MP3s, and the fidelity and dynamics are NICE. I checked out a couple of the files in Sound Forge and though they show some - but not a great deal of - stereo separation, this may be just the nature of the source material...

Those pics look SWEET, DJ!

I tend to think in the direction of Usenet for large uploads like DVDs. Torrents don't get off the ground well with big stuff and it becomes a strain on everyone's bandwidth - uploader and downloader alike. And I've seen Rapidshare delete stuff (for 'violations' or whatever) that the uploader took a LONG TIME to put up there; that's not counting the slow download speed many of us get from RS. On the newsgroups, you RAR it, PAR it and up it: the news servers take care of the proliferation, so the uploader is DONE once it's upped, and the downloaders get good speed...

Hmmm... I think I've already answered my own question: trying to "subtract" the trailing Odd field (or the leading Odd field, for that matter) from the Even field would be ineffective as there is no duplication between the two. (One being Even and one being Odd, after all...) It would seem then that the Even fields in the example are irretrievably corrupted...

Boo! Hiss!

The XviD I have (from the same broadcast, I think) has some end credits but NOT cast credits, so maybe the fault is in the source material...? Hey - there's always IMDB if I really wanna know...

I have to concur with dark_jedi based on the samples I downloaded to check the sync: the picture quality on this will knock your socks off!

Don't beat yourself up over the credit roll, DJ - props to you for doing the heavy lifting on this project!
