Star Trek Deep Space Nine - NTSC DVD Restoration & 1080p HD Enhancement (Emissary Released)
Time

Personally, I’ve had good luck using Handbrake to detelecine the DVD rips to 720x480 square-pixel lossless CFR 23.97fps h264 mp4s, and then running Topaz VEAI’s Dione Interlaced Robust V3 on them. The great thing about this model is that it keeps the majority of the detail while making things a little cleaner and sharper. It never massively blurs any areas of the image, like Artemis has a tendency to do, nor does it have the lengthy processing time of Gaia. It also sorts out the occasional interlacing artifacts left in my detelecined rips (which are usually the result of post-process screen shake). Other models tend to exaggerate them instead. The only big downside is that the sharpening causes the image to lose a little of its perceived depth - but that’s not so noticeable in motion, at TV-distance.

Here’s images of the Defiant, the Station, the Replimat, and the Sisko.

Idea: OT Edits to Fit the PT and/or the Larger Saga (A Resource Thread, Hopefully)
Time

Maybe it’s a consequence of thinking about the movies too much because of fanedits (or just re-evaluating things in the light of TCW, where it’s made super super obvious with Ahsoka’s arcs in Season 5 and 7) but I’ve always thought the Jedi and the Republic being pretty awful in the PT was text, not even subtext. Obviously there’s the stuff about them not bothering to do anything about slavery outside of Republic space (or to even free just Anakin’s mum which would take minimal effort), but then there’s the characterisation of Mace and Yoda, and the rest of the council occasionally, as generally being aloof, holier-than-thou, hypocritical monks up in their literal high tower - especially in TPM. Mace being a bit of a prick to Anakin is very on-the-nose at times. Also, lines like “You know, m’lady, that Count Dooku was once a Jedi. He couldn’t assassinate anyone.” are surely written to show us just how naïve and egotistical the Order has become.

In defense of Rey Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker, and why I do not think it undermines her arc in The Last Jedi.

stealing the Skywalker name

What’s up with this idea? The ending scene of TROS clearly indicates she has chosen that name with Luke and Leia’s blessing. She hesitates and looks at their ghosts, who are smiling at her, before she says it. It’s not “without their say in the matter”. It’s essentially a post-mortem adoption, if you have to label it. Did Leia “steal” the name Organa? Sure, it’s silly fan service, but it’s not le evil Palpatine woman stealing God Emperor Luke’s holy surname.

Characterising Rey’s behaviour in TLJ in the way you did is also twisting it to the point of parody - you’d have to be completely closed off to what the movie is doing with Rey and Luke’s dynamic for you to think Rey is the one at fault on Ahch-To. “Stole his books”? You mean the ones he was planning to burn? And yes, Rey finding inner peace and acceptance is the main thrust of her journey. Internal emotional development is just as valid as like, levelling up her force powers to throw bigger rocks and pull Star Destroyers out of the sky!!!, or whatever.

TROS is a rough enough movie without people reading these weirdly malicious ideas into it.

People post nonsense on reddit claiming to be insiders all the time. This post is so transparently trying to push some narrative that Lucasfilm/Disney ruined some mythical four-hour ‘JJ cut’, or that “Abrams shot two movies”, which is entirely unsubstantiated. The reshoots and cuts in TROS aren’t subtle - Mustafar is obviously cut down, Luke’s wig is obviously a reshoot etc. Similarly for Josstice League vs. the Snyder Cut: you can feel it. If Coruscant, Mortis, clones mixed with Phasma’s DNA (???) etc. had been cut, there’d be some trace in the final product, and there just isn’t. Ditto for the claim that Crait was originally at the start of TLJ - that leaves the movie without a functional third act; where would Luke project to? Would he just die on the island? It’s silly fanfiction at best, some weird attempt to slander Alan Horn and venerate JJ Abrams at worst. Plus “Heirs to the Force” is a fan-speculation tier title (to be fair, Duel of the Fates is too, and that’s real…).

Edit: Also, I can’t possibly trust anyone who sincerely believes DOTF ‘got Star Wars’ the best. That script ends with Yoda and Luke telling Rey how fantastic it is that she’s decided to embrace the Dark Side and that “narrow was their point of view”, entirely missing what Lucas was getting at the whole time. Yes, integrating your shadow is part of Star Wars; no, this doesn’t mean just occasionally choking people, as a treat. The dark side is addictive. Plus, “Rey Solana”? Why give Rey a totally arbitrary last name? If she had to get one, let’s be honest, it was always going to be “Skywalker” or at an absolute stretch “Solo”. Sorry, I’m ranting because I’m sick of DOTF being put on some pedestal just because TROS was also bad.

I mocked this up very lazily. The audio is a total mess because both the clip and the original movie are fully scored; and also there’s not quite enough audio to fill the gap. I’m sure with time and effort and the OST you could make something a little cleaner but I don’t have a huge amount of hope. I also tried to match the colour grade of the new clip to the original movie, though I think I actually prefer the colour grade from the YouTube video. I wonder what other lovely, fully restored clips Lucasfilm are sitting on to occasionally trickle out in YouTube videos forty years later.

Every time Rey touches the dagger, she has a flash of the entire ROTJ Death Star II explosion sequence, complete with Special Edition Praxis ring. /s

I do think a vision of some kind would be better than having the dagger whisper “ENDOR SYSTEM!” really obviously, which strikes me as being painfully on the nose and even worse than having it in Threepio’s translation. Perhaps it should be obscured somehow so it doesn’t give the full reveal of the DS2 ruin. This movie has a bunch of visions already, so while it absolutely is a crutch, it’s not one that’s unique to the fanedit. I think we’d ideally want to convey that the dagger is leading her there via a feeling or whatever, not just outright telling her where to go with words.

So does it rhyme in Sith? And Threepio had to carefully come up with a English Basic translation that preserves the rhyme? Or does it not rhyme in Sith, but is designed in such a way that is does rhyme when translated accurately to Basic? Is there no indication of rhyming whatsoever in the original Sith, and Threepio just added that to make it sound spookier?

Seriously though, I love this dagger idea (RogueLeader for Lucasfilm CEO when??¿¿¿?) and that’s a great way of implementing it, if you can manage to deliver it convincingly.

I’ll have a look at Sith eyes for the hiss at the weekend. I kind of hate the hiss because again it’s like, “look how comically evil the dark side you’re supposedly tempted by is!”, but you can’t really fix that, so I suppose leaning into it is the best option. I’ll probably do them for the whole sequence anyway since I want that available for my own edit (Maul and Sidious have them all the time + rule of cool).

Might be neat if evil vampire Rey had the Sith eyes.

Edit: Something like this mockup; or maybe subtler. Or even more vampiric.

Then again, making vision Rey even more obviously evil just sort of reinforces the general idea that Rey isn’t actually tempted towards the dark side at all. It’d have been more compelling, in my opinion, if there was something in that “cave” that actually appealed to her in some way. Alas.

Edit 2:
EBSynth test. Unfortunately it squishes the pupils around so I’d have to do those manually, I think. Still, plausible if desired.

Zack Snyder's Justice League: Redux Ideas thread

I feel like a ~3 hour version of this, cropped shot by shot to 16:9, with tasteful additions from the Whedon cut and the unnecessary future/epilogue bits removed, would be ideal. Some restructuring of the earlier acts would also probably benefit the movie - someone on reddit suggested shuffling some of the Lois mourning stuff earlier and I think that’s a good call. Trimming out some of the excessive Aquaman stuff would also probably be welcome, since unlike Cyborg or Flash’s backstory stuff, it’s not really emotionally engaging or relevant.

On the other hand, part of the fun of this existing is the ridiculous assembly-cut esque length and the 4:3 aspect ratio and I think sanding away Snyder’s excesses would lose a bit of the personality of this version. Then again, I would never rewatch this uncut.

It seems like this movie is like the anti-TROS as far as fanediting goes. Glacial pace, practically nothing at all deleted, and there’s a whole other version of the movie to steal extra bits from.

The problem with this petition is that it’s based on the JJ cut nonsense. We have no evidence that JJ was forced to cut the movie down any more than any other movie has to be cut down for run time. The “Disney Star Wars is Dumb” source the petition links to is a repost of a post originally from /r/saltierthancrait, clearly intended to stir up controversy and almost certainly fabricated.

It’s like the QAnon thing - there’s a whole culture of Star Wars fans, and particularly YouTubers, who buy in to this enormous divide and conflict at Lucasfilm because of their supposed insiders, and are sure that any day now Joe Biden Kathleen Kennedy will be suddenly ousted or arrested or something. With Justice League, the BTS issues were well-known, obvious, and corroborated by the actors. The “JJ cut” idea is just a desperate attempt to apply that same concept to this movie, even though TROS didn’t bring in a second director for reshoots or anything similar.

My point is there’d probably be more of a chance of success with a straight forward petition to release the deleted scenes we know were shot, rather than bringing in unsubstantiated speculation and begging for a cut that doesn’t really exist.

Sorry, this isn’t anything to do with Ascendant.
