I don’t like the cloning idea because it just raises an inevitable question at the end of TROS: is he really dead? Surely he must have a plan Z - another load of clone bodies somewhere! Bleh. I know canonically his decrepit form in TROS is because the cloning was imperfect or whatever, but when I first saw the movie I just presumed he looked like a corpse because he literally was a corpse being Darth Sion’d back to “life”. The Frankenstein imagery of the big claw also compounded this. Luckily, TROS is a great movie for headcanon since most of the plot around Palpatine is exclusive to the novelisation, so I can continue to gleefully ignore whatever I don’t like until Filoni or Soule or someone redeems it.

I don’t think Handbrake handles HDR at all, so it doesn’t do any tonemapping from Rec/BT 2020 to Rec709, hence the washed out colours on the 4K rip. To handle 4K rips properly, you’ll need to make sure you’re encoding to a 10-bit colour or higher format (if you have the hard drive space, consider DNxHR HQX or 444), to preserve all the colour information. Then you’ll have to tonemap the movie yourself in your editing software. I think Davinci Resolve has various built in LUTs for this, and there are a few that were made for the new OT Blurays at The Star Wars Trilogy forums. Alternatively, you could try ffmpeg using some of the settings discussed in this thread, which would allow you to tonemap the movie down to SDR and convert it in a single step. As an alternative, there are also some already-tonemapped “10bit SDR” encodes of 4K Blurays floating around on the internet - you’ll have some generational quality loss if you use these as a source, but they’re very convenient.

Shy, insecure Anakin seems like a great idea for making the most of Hayden’s performance in AOTC. You could perhaps leave in his cockiness when Jedi-ing (“If you’ll excuse me!”), to show a contrast between his (over)confidence in his space wizard day job, but his lack of confidence regarding all the interpersonal skills the Jedi never taught him/even deterred him from learning.

Are we gonna get a version of this in motion?

Sorry, I’ve been pretty busy with University things recently, but I hope to get back to fanedit stuff (ageing, deleted scene upscaling etc.) eventually. Topaz VEAI (Gigapixel Video) has also been adding some new AI models in its latest betas, which I would like to try out when I get a chance.

Sidious Revealed

The eye flicker is not deliberate; this is just a proof of concept/unpolished test.
I think it’s too fast so I’ll have to spread the transformation over multiple shots - perhaps have him go halfway to Sidious in this shot, and then take one of the later shots of the Sidious prosthetics and see if I can’t edit it to start out with him still only partially transformed.

Is Padme knowing Anakin is on Mustafar later going to be an implied force connection or something?

Gah I overlooked that. I could try to shoehorn back in the lines about the Separatists being on Mustafar but I worry that would bring it too close to the original scene and make it too apparent that it’d been moved.

My best bet is probably to redub the security recording Obi-Wan sees so Palpatine specifically tells Anakin to “go to the Mustafar system” to bring peace to the Empire. Since I’m planning on stealing your concept of having Padme intentionally bring Obi-Wan to Mustafar, it can be implied that he told her where to fly to. Of course I’d then have to remove “Do you know where he is now?” and the associated lines from the scene of Obi-Wan visiting Padme. It would recontextualise that scene somewhat, since there’d no longer be any tension around Padme revealing Anakin’s location. I suppose it’d suggest that Obi-Wan is just visiting her as a concerned friend - perhaps also to get her help with trying to redeem Anakin, though I’m not sure if the dialogue really implies that. Bringing her to Mustafar is probably recklessly endangering her life, but she’s no stranger to that after Naboo, Geonosis and The Clone Wars.

It’s something JJ Abrams probably wouldn’t have worried about… 😉

In my edit I’m moving the scene of Anakin visiting Padme to just after “Once more, the Sith shall rule the Galaxy!”, in an attempt to give the viewer a bit more context into where Anakin’s head is at just before the Jedi Temple Massacre. Here’s my proof of concept/test/first version/what I slapped together over lunch.

To this end, I’ve removed any reference to Anakin being just about to leave for Mustafar, or the temple being on fire. He still lies to her about the Jedi betraying the Republic, but in my edit this is just he and Palpatine’s ‘cover story’ rather than anything he legitimately believes. I’ve put the lines about Anakin having found a way to save Padme in here, to remind the viewer that he truly believes that if he goes through with this betrayal of the Jedi, he will be able to save Padme. (I also cut Palpatine’s earlier admission that ‘only one has discovered the secret’ to avoid undermining Anakin’s deal with the devil.)

The audio is still a bit rough - the change in tone and volume from “I won’t lose you Padme” to “Wait for me until I return” is too abrupt - but I’ll tidy it up when I’ve decided I’m happy with the dialogue. Please let me know if you have any criticisms or suggestions.

As long as you stick to Adywan’s donation model rather than Ivan Ortega’s you’ll be alright, I think, but generally getting money involved with fanediting is risky. I think a lot of the issue people had with Ivan was that he was framing it essentially as people paying him to ‘fix’ the movie, and he didn’t respond well to criticism in his brief stint on this website. It certainly didn’t help that his fanedit wound up being… subpar after he’d hyped it for years.

People use password protected Vimeo videos to reduce the chance of Disney copyright-nuking them. Clips of fanedits often don’t last long on YouTube if the algorithm picks up a few seconds of forbidden John Williams. I stick everything on Streamable out of habit and I don’t think any of it has been taken down.

A more emotional take of “Rey Skywalker”.

I much prefer this delivery. I get why JJ went for a happier/prouder take for his triumphant ending, though. Unfortunately I don’t think cutting from her smiling in the original shot to her mouth open in the BTS shot quite works.

It makes me wonder - why does this crying take even exist? Obviously they probably do a lot of takes to have plenty of material to work with in editing, but it doesn’t fit tonally with the ending we actually got. Why would she just start crying while talking to this old woman? I originally assumed she was supposed to be choked up with joy for her found family, but seeing it again that forced smile and then the tear seem like sadness. Was this scene going to be a more emotional funeral for Ben and Leia or something? I guess we’ll never know.

What is the reasoning behind any cropping? What is the purpose of additional cropping? Is The Empire Strikes Back cropped throughout?

All Blurays produced from scanned film have to be cropped to some extent to cover up edges of the frame, and things like the soundtrack. Different shots might require different amounts of cropping. When these films were originally projected in theatres, they were ‘cropped’ by the projectionist, but obviously you can’t really do that with a TV so the Blurays have to be cropped by the studios producing them. Clearly some times more thought and effort is put into this than other times.

I don’t know. I’m a bigger Anakin fan than many, but I think this would’ve been absurd. Why spend two and a half movies building up two compelling new Force-using characters, Rey and Ben, and developing their dynamic together, only to sideline them in favour of the same dude who killed Palpatine last time? I would’ve liked Anakin to have had a slightly greater presence in the movie (rather than getting the same size role as Luminara Unduli), but I think anything more than
the support role he gets alongside the other ghosts in jonh’s edit would have robbed Rey and Ben of their moment. Besides, to a certain extent, the ST is about the two parts of his legacy: Kylo idolises Vader; Rey is trained by Anakin’s children.
