The Last Jedi: Rekindled (Released)

Any chance a V4 could happen, or is this project fully complete?

Hey Lawdog,

I don’t have any changes in mind right now. I’ve already made the updates based around TROS, so I consider this project basically finished. It’s also an especially busy time in my life, and I don’t expect to have time to make any major updates. I wouldn’t say never though!

Poppa’s edit actually doesn’t remove it, I’m pretty sure. I had to go in and remove it myself. Was pretty easy to do it seamlessly, though.

Would @Poppa consider a V3.1 with any potential changes needed in TLJ to make TROS a more coherent-ish story?

I don’t think I’m going to be able to make any new iterations anytime soon, but I think the V3 (especially the “Palpatine” version) is intended to make those adjustments.

I kept the line about Rey’s parents because I felt it was too important for the scene.

It’s a little hard to explain, but basically “You’re nothing… but not to me” is my favorite line in the film. It’s a seductive line from Kylo, telling Rey exactly what she has been dying to hear. It’s truly tempting.

For me, this only works if Kylo is twisting the knife about her parents, and just the idea that “they were nobody” doesn’t cut it for me. It makes it seem like Rey wants to be important or from some kind of noble family, when really she just wants to be loved.

So, whether Kylo is lying, or he saw visions distorted by Snoke…etc. I’d rather have the retcon in TROS than mess with a key moment in TLJ.

Man, it would be nice to have a whole day to revisit that “You were right” line!

Jar Jar, glad you’re stepping in and trying to make improvements!

Hal, maybe the existing line could use some EQ? I remember thinking it might be a little aggressive in the low end, and also a bit loud in the mix. Maybe turning it down would fit better. I agree the delivery is a bit flat!

I’m also not sure if this helps, but I remember back when I was doing it I found a helmeted Kylo line from the very beginning of TFA where he actually says “You are so right” to Max Von Sydow. However, they seem to have changed the filtering so much since TFA (or maybe just that one line) that I couldn’t use it for anything. But I thought I’d mention it since the line is soooo close.

Maybe Kylo changed it based on the helpful feedback of Poe. 😉

I’m just imagining Kylo pacing in his quarters: “They made fun of my mask again. That was so not wizard. I’ll show them!”

What's your take on Emperor Palpatine being brought back for The Rise of Skywalker?

I AM looking at the line this way. The things I mentioned are WHY the delivery is lifeless. It being lifeless is the point.

I don’t know, man. You’re saying the stilted, wooden acting of the scene is because of his Jedi training and not because of stilted, wooden acting? Do you think that intent comes across in the filmmaking? It’s fine if you do, but I don’t know any other people with that read on the scene.

I’m not blaming Hayden, btw. It’s an awkward line, and Lucas bears huge responsibility for all of the actors’ performances.

I’ll see about trying to upscale the plate later today/tomorrow, but if anyone else wanted to have a go at it, here is the Google drive link Poppa provided awhile back for the clean plate.

Hey, I found a few minutes! Uploaded the 4K backplate for the puppet show from sherlockpotter’s source to the same link. Thanks, sherlock, it is sooo much sharper. Honestly, it makes me want to remaster the film in 4K (hehe, in about 5 years).

I had to tweak the color slightly to better match the HD version we’ve been working with and got it in the ballpark, but it may need some refinement (and Hal’s LUT ultimately).

The trick to using sherlock’s MKV (which is great because it’s right from the disc, no conversion) is to use an app called TSMuxer to demux the mkv into just it’s video component, which was a .264 file. The .264 actually works in After Effects, but it’s a bit slow. I only needed a few frames so I just used it as-is. But you can also use (sorry MR!) ffmpeg to change the container from .264 to .mp4 using the code posted by sade1212: “ffmpeg -i inputfile.264 -c:v copy outputfile.mp4”. There would be no conversion so it’s incredibly fast and without any quality loss.

OMG OMG OMG!
*catches breath running along with this thread.

Yes, RL, amazing!!! Maybe I’m a little sentimental right now, but it’s frankly adorable. I agree that having a second shot would be nice, and that yes, cropping into a 4K clean plate would be the best option.

I did try frame interpolating in After Effects a while back to slow the shot down instead and found the results unsatisfactory. It is because of the dust, as DominicCobb said.

The source file given to me was 1080p so that’s what I worked with, but it’s a completely non-destructive AE file, meaning I should be able to simply swap in the 4K source sherlockpotter and turn on continuously rasterize in the precomps. When I can find time… MR I may take you up on that and send you my AE file! We can PM the details.

Would @Poppa be up for a try?

He definitely doesn’t have to, but I would be more interested in seeing his TIE fighters placed onto the new Mustafar biomes footage.

Hehe. Unfortunately (for fanediting purposes), I am currently adjusting to becoming a for real poppa.

I basically have just enough time to follow along reading this thread between efforts to coax the newborn to sleep.

I do love all of the ideas and tweaks being played around with here. V2 will be astonishing achievement for the community, I think.

I haven’t actually seen the new biomes shots. Was there one in particular that looked like a good match?

jonh! So great to hear from you, buddy! Love the FX breakdown. More and more I find the FX reels themselves are almost as impressive as the FX. I love seeing all of the nodes and layers of detail come together!

The only thing that bugged me was the last shot of when the Falcon flew away from the sunset, as I felt that it looked too slow and not in-line with the visual effects of the film.

It’s funny, I haven’t really looked at that shot in a year. Snooker and I went through about 5 different versions.

Ultimately we went with version E (pw: fanedit).

There is also version A, which is similar but does have a faster move.

The reason we went with E was because someone pointed out (I believe DominicCobb) that they used an extremely long telephoto lens to get the final composition with the sun/s so large behind Rey and BB-8. Therefore, because of the perspective, the Falcon should be large and not zoom across the screen so much.

And then there is Version D.
