Skeleton Crew (live action series) - a general discussion thread
Time

The first two episodes were… fine. I wasn’t expecting anything amazing and I didn’t get anything amazing. The production values were fine. The lighting could have been better, parts of it were hard to see. At the least I thought it was better than what I watched of The Acolyte (unless it just plummets downhill in the third episode like that show did.)

I was shocked that there was a reference to the Star Wars Holiday Special. That was weird.

They did cast Nick Frost as a pirate droid. That was kind of fun. Steve Urkel was in it as well for some reason. Those expecting Jude Law don’t really get to see him until the end of the second episode.

If you want a kid’s show about space pirates, then you’ll get that here. Don’t know what I think of the story of characters. All I can say is that I’m indifferent so far.

Denis Villeneuve says the Star Wars franchise “derailed” in 1983
Time

Rebel Moon is like if you took Battle Beyond the Stars and Dune, put them in a blender, and then made it pretentious and boring.

As for Denis Villeneuve’s (huge fan of his movies by the way) comments, I can sort of see where he’s coming from, even though I love that movie (in fact, it’s my second favorite of the series and I’m even wearing a Return of the Jedi shirt as I type this, lol). It did fall back on formula a bit (another Death Star for example). I don’t mind the Ewoks, but he said he was 15 when he saw the movie and at that age I didn’t really care for them. I mainly love the movie because I love Jabba the Hutt, The Emperor, and the stuff with Luke and Vader. And it’s optimistic, which is nice. It ends on a good note.

Anyway, maybe he’d have liked Return of the Jedi more if David Lynch had directed it.

How would you handle a hard reboot of all nine episodes of Star Wars?
Time

For the remakes of the original trilogy they would be directed by Zack Snyder and feel like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9X_FmCbrIA

All of the characters would be played by George Lucas, except Mark Hamill is Darth Vader and Ewan McGregor plays Ben Kenobi.

All the characters are CGI, including the humans. In fact, the entire movie is CGI. Even George Lucas is CGI.

It would use the original drafts with none of the rewrites. This needs to be George’s unembellished vision before people started reining him in. Well, except for whatever Zack Snyder offers to the table.

The prequels would be three hour experimental films just like the movies George Lucas wanted to make before Star Wars became successful. All completely visual, no actors or dialogue. Basically make them a Star Wars version of Stan Brakhage movies or Koyaanisqatsi.

And then the remake of the sequel trilogy is basically just shot for shot remakes of the other movies, like Gus Van Sant’s Psycho remake. Maybe have Vince Vaughn appear in them as Darth Vader, why not?

For anybody out there who didn’t realize this was a joke, please do not actually do this, I beg you.

'Rey Skywalker' (Upcoming live action motion picture) - general discussion thread
Time

Guess it says a lot about how excited people are about this upcoming movie that it’s now turned into a thread discussing Rogue One.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t a huge fan of Rogue One when I originally saw it, but it grew on me after I watched Andor. I won’t go into too much detail on my thoughts, but I think it’s good, not great.

What do you think of The Prequel Trilogy? A general discussion.

The best duels are ones where the duelists have some major personal history and backstory that led to the duel happening in the first place. That’s why the duels in ESB and ROTJ are always the best. In ESB, you have Luke fighting the man who killed his father (or so he believes), and in ROTJ you have a son fighting his own father.

Also helps that those two duels had really good lighting and cinematography (especially Empire), something which I’ll admit is a bit lacking in the prequel duels.

Anyone else think Empire Strikes Back's Special Edition is actually better than the Theatrical Cut?
Time

I’d like the Cloud City changes more if they hadn’t added those two shots of people reacting to Lando’s announcement on the leadspeaker. They just look too out of place. I do really like the design of Cloud City in the special edition. It does look a little too much like 90’s CGI, but I like that it gives off Metropolis or Flash Gordon vibes.

Okay, what did we LIKE about the Special Editions?
Time

From the original movie I liked the added Biggs scene. Adding a sound effect to the stormtrooper bumping his head was funny. The added shots of the Jawa sandcrawler look pretty good. Aside from that, I don’t really like any of the other changes in this one.

In Empire Strikes Back I like that they included more of the Wampa and Cloud City (the building designs, not the shots of people listening to Lando’s announcement).

I don’t think there’s a single change in Return of the Jedi that I like. At least not any that I can think of. Oh wait, I thought of one. The added part where Oola falls into the Rancor pit and the door opens, that was good. Too bad it takes place right after that godawful Jedi Rocks song.

Basically I dislike the vast majority of the changes.

Can we get some love for Yub Nub?
Time

Some make the argument that people like Yub Nub because of the nostalgia, but that’s not the case for me. As a kid I saw the special editions first and I prefer Yub Nub. Granted, I didn’t like it the first time I heard it. It felt cheesy and out of place. It did grow on me the more times I watched the unaltered Return of the Jedi. I guess I’m just used to it now.

The reason I prefer it over Victory Celebration is for a few reasons. Victory Celebration sounds too melancholy. I prefer having a happier song to end things. I also really dislike the addition of the late 90’s CGI planets in the special edition. The crowds of people in them make the planets look really fake. It looks far too dated now and feels completely out of place in a movie from the early 80’s. It’s part of why the special editions don’t work, the changes do not feel consistent with the rest of the movies. I also am not a fan of changing Anakin’s ghost to Hayden Christensen. Nothing against Christensen, but it feels weird seeing him in the original trilogy and his facial expression is creepy.

Then again, I could see someone making the argument that Victory Celebration fits better with the prequels, but it doesn’t fit the original movies in my opinion.

James Earl Jones dies, aged 93. RIP.
Time

R.I.P. He was one of my favorites. The world is a much lesser place without that magnificent voice of his. Obviously I love his work as the voice of Darth Vader, one of my favorite characters in fiction let alone Star Wars, but there’s plenty of other movies I’ll remember him for. The Lion King, Coming to America, Conan the Barbarian, Field of Dreams, The Sandlot, The Hunt for Red October, Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey. He made his film debut in Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove, that’s already an impressive thing to have on your resume. He had a very long and prosperous career in film and onstage and I’ll never forget him.

Worst Dialogue from The Last Jedi
Time

Is it just me or was this supposed to be about the dialogue?

Then again, my problem here is that a lot of the dialogue just isn’t that memorable to me. Granted, it’s been awhile since I watched this one and I don’t like thinking about it. Most of the bad lines that I remember from the sequel trilogy were from Rise of Skywalker. I mean, say what you want about the prequels, there’s a lot of memorable lines (albeit sometimes for the wrong reasons).

There are some clunkers. Just about any line from Hux makes me cringe. That whole exchange between Hux and Poe at the beginning is just awful. A lot of bad out of place humor. The “saving what we love, not destroying what we hate” line gets made fun of a lot, so I won’t get into that one.

One that I remember reading that I couldn’t believe was actually in the movie (I had to double check to make sure) was this one: “Master Skywalker, we need you to bring the Jedi back because Kylo Ren is strong with the dark side of the Force.”
Christ, somebody needed to proofread that one. I wonder if he was in the Amazon with her mom when she was researching spiders right before she died?
