Red Dwarf Night: 10th Anniversary (now on Spleen) (Released)
Time

UPDATE!!!

Due to a kind member hooking me up with a copy ripped from his VHS recording, I can now update to V.02.

This means the big changes I can make is:

-Replace the 50% of Patrick Stuarts interludes & into, which for V.01 was upscaled from a video on Youtube.

-Replace ‘Universe Challange’ V.01 was VHS Rip that was patched in parts with a video from Youtube.

-Hopefully restore the original audio over the ‘BBC Idents’.

-The edit will be reconstructed from scratch using the V.01 Master as a template.

I have started, but do not have a completion date in mind at the moment, maybe 2 months?

The Mp4 is availible on spleen, if you don’t have access, pm me and I can provide another route.

The Dvd I became stuck on, my origional concept was just a bit crappy in its execution due to the elements I was trying to use for the animated menu. I could just create a iso without any menus I suppose?

I have recently purchased a nice little bit of software for backing up DVDs, it upscale and converts the frame rate in just a couple of clicks, and gives nice control over bit rates. I am tempted to run my master AVI of RDN through this program and create a high def version in MKV?

Any preferences???

Wow! I have been an RD fan since series 2. I was just putting together a DVD of all the bits I could find relating to the USA pilot, which I lost some time back.

I then started searching for the 10th anniversary and found this thread. Sounds like a real labour of love!

Is the DVD out and finished yet ? I would love to have this in my collection. Any chance of the Mega links?

Hey, sorry for the late response, my new job eats up all my time.

OK so the Dvd I am still working on, I had a menu I was building but the elements were too low quality and it did not look good.

I am going to build something a little less complicated, have everything ready just fighting to find some time.

I will in the meantime pm you a mega link to the mp4 which is around the same bit rate as the Dvd will be. This way you can still enjoy the whole thing!

On another note I have asked before, but as your new I am looking for another VHS source either complete or incomplete to do a version 2. Have you come across anyone who may or recorded it back in '98?

Hows it going? I am eager to see how good it looks 😃

Well I started to make my own menu, rotoscoped some scutters and other stuff, but the source materiel is not great and it just looked a bit ‘homeworkey’ - crap.

Instead I am going to use one of the official dvd menus as a base and alter it slightly.

Ideally I want to have the dvd 9 completed before the official Bluray release of series I-VIII.

  • the very first shot, while much less grainy than the other versions, shows very clear signs of badly digitally composited smoke for example.

Was that an original smoke element not very well digitally re-composited, or a newly created cg element?

I would agree its my least favourite version of the DC, but mainly due to the green CC.

Simple - his main job was to figure out in what order to put the elements through the optical printer to make the shot work and to make sure all the masks aligned properly, which was a near impossible task in those days and he still managed it. In digital compositing, the same task is laughably easy in comparison. It’s like tearing down the pyramids and rebuilding them using modern cranes and diggers and stuff and saying that they’re the same thing, because they look almost the same only more polished.

Plus optical compositing has a very specific visual aestetic to it, which is lost when the elements are recomped digitally.

Out of interest what did you think of the way they went about recompositing Blade Runner for the Final Cut?

DCP Back to the Future It looks fantastic, the best version. Thank you very much .

If you found the DCP on Spleen then there is also HD versions of parts 2 & 3 that were recently uploaded. They are not as good as the DCP… but much better than the official Blurays.

they are probably based off of the 2002-2003 DVD transfers, personally i have no issue with them, despite the grain! I wish i had an invite to myspleen, and blutopia!!1

No I believe they are Sky HD airing, however could be wrong.

It’s worth noting that the avchd versions are meant to be burned onto a DVD.

But they also serve well as properly encoded (as opposed to transcoded by some rando) version with a smaller file size. Just need to dig the m2ts out.

I just rename the m2ts extension as MKV, then this reads on all my devices.

Red Dwarf Night: 10th Anniversary (now on Spleen) (Released)

Finished, master file exported!

I overcome my fear of the audio, did what I could. The audio taken from the original VHS is not the same quality as the Dvd sources, but that’s something we will just have to live with.

I am currently rendering out an mp4 file (approx 7gb),which I will be uploading to the spleen later today.

As soon as the render is done I will start work on the DVD9.
I wanted to leave this until last as I have an idea for a animated menu, let’s see if I can pull it off.

The final version has something added that was not a part of the original broadcast…
… I have created a fresh montage of clips from the broadcast layered over the Red Dwarf theme tune. I Have placed this after the first BBC2 ident , then leading onto Patrick Stewarts introduction.

I thought it would be a nice edition to represent how an official release may of been produced.
