Ghostbusters: We're Ready to Believe You (* unfinished project *)
Time
Hey guys, have been on a bit of a hiatus from the OT.com boards as of late but just checked back in and definitely sad to see that nothing was done with this. I did send a DVD of material form my collection to Neil- unfortunately it seemed that some of it leaked its way onto Youtube and that was about it... anyone heard anything otherwise?

Just a quick update so folks don't think this is dead- going to compile a disc shortly with the final version of the feature along with VH1's When Star Wars Ruled the World (which, consequently uses a few graphic treatments from the CBS airing)... hopefully going to be done with this before the holidays depending on amount of free time.

Still active, just in a bit of a holding pattern as I realized just how much RAM 2+ hours of video 1:1 in FCP eats up... I'm going to need to do a little upgrading before I can start putting things together.

EDIT: So if anyone knows where I can nab some RAM for a G5 on the cheap- it would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't noticed any edits either in content or length through the feature though.

Davey- that's a great idea. I'll include a suppliment with just the bumpers edited together.

Andy - literally just as Luke hears Ben Kenobi's voice tell him to let go it cuts to the X-Wings and the Falcon heading into the exhaust port in ROTJ. It cuts back in right in the middle of the Throne Room scene... so the majority of the Battle of Yavin is there, just that gap from Luke launching the proton torpedos on...

So just an update, I've starting bringing the video into FCP - the edit at the end of the film that I so heartlessly made as a kid is proving to be a bit of a problem, I may have to bridge over the gap with video from the Faces VHS - which I'm thinking should match to a certain degree. But if any of you that mentioned you might have the video still in hand might be able to provide me with a dub of that final 20 minutes, it would be greatly appreciated.

I do have to say that the commercials and the bumpers have proven to be the shining star of the whole project- the Lee's jeans ad set to ELO's "Hold on Tight" I had completely forgotten about... not to mention the countless car commercials that now feel like parodies...

Sounds great-- if worse came to worse, I could restore the missing piece with A/V from the Faces VHS full frame release. Starting at the commercial break previous. It should match in fairly well... they air the conclusion with Mark Hamill before the end credits roll, so it would take a l'll trimming here and there but might just work.

Over sadly... I know, as soon as I have access to a phone booth or a DeLorean I'll go back in time and kick my own eight year old ass. Luke hears Obi-Wan, switches off his computer, Vader gets clipped, Han tells Luke he's all clear, suddenly the Falcon's nose-diving into the exhaust port and Nein Nunb is proclaiming "mwhut!" -- then what gets me is that about the time the Star Destroyer crashes into the Death Star surface, awful awful VCR edit back to the Throne Room...

Someone get me that time machine.

Well tape now in hand, I can confirm that it's from the 1984 showing. How do I know? After pulling the tape out and using precision carbon-dating techniques... no... I could only wish. The first commercial break (following Magic Johnson's fond ode to R2-D2 "I really dug on R2, he's my boy.") There's an exclusive first look at Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan coming March 30th... Greystoke, of course, being released in 1984. Jackpot. The only catch is that the recording on the tape starts immediately at the Fox fanfare... no intro. And for some reason, even at a young age, I decided to re-edit the trench run to include Lando flying the Falcon into the Death Star, figure that one out... But everything else is firmly in place. Hamill in his tux on a "set" closing things up is also on the tape. (And I'm sure everyone's dying to hear Valeri Bertinelli talk about the first time she saw Star Wars and how R2 and 3PO remind her of Laurel and Hardy.)

I'm just amazed at how well this tape has withstood the test of time. The reels may have yellowed and the tracking may phase in and out but it's still in fantastic shape given it's age...

So given that the feature is somewhat incomplete (man did I F with the continuity having Lando show up or what) maybe I should do a transfer of the bumpers and commercials? Put together a mini-featurette of sorts?

Yes--ocpmovie put it as an extra on Return Of The Ewok, if I recall correctly. Quality was not optimal, but very watchable. However, I do think it may have been somewhat incomplete. And I know for sure the Flintstones bit was not in it. But there definitely was some of the BTS stuff taken directly from "The Making Of Star Wars", though narrated by Mark.

A complete capture of the whole thing from start to finish is definitely worth pursuing.

Narrated identically to Making of Star Wars (I vividly recall this line, "The end result is a masterful illusion..." as the Falcon is being pulled into the Death Star).

I'm excited to get started on this, I'll keep everyone posted. Hopefully I'll have the tape in hand after the holiday weekend.

I would love to see that, personally - I think that is the one that my Mom taped for me when I was little, so it was my first SW exposure.

As I'm sure it was for a lot of us younger folks around here, it's just that extra little bit of nostalgia that makes it all worth the while. I like the idea of capping the entire presentation from start to finish - it shouldn't be too difficult, I can bring it straight into FCP from my deck with ease. I'll delve more into the How To technical forums once the tape makes it out here, but I'm sure cleaning up VHS video from a broadcast source is a pretty painstaking process?

EDIT: The best I can figure is that it's this airing per markhamill.com "CBS Broadcast of Star Wars [February 26, 1984] TV Guest Host of the first network airing of Star Wars. The opening and ending report given by Mark has been nicknamed the "Star Wars Wrap Around" it included an exclusive look at the behind the scenes of the movie. He also talks about what the Trilogy has meant to him."

The problem is that I viewed those tapes A LOT, I mean a ton and it was back in the day when care for a VHS was foreign to me- my sister is sending the tape out from CO to me and I'll have to see how much wear and tear there is on it. There'll probably be a lot of cleanup involved since it's coming from an ancient VHS source.

But why not- it'll be a good way to get myself into fan preservations... should I do a complete transfer, feature, bumpers, commercials and all?

The bumpers are all original material that I haven't seen before (ie. Carrie Fisher wishing the film a happy birthday, The Flintstones talking about their first experience seeing Star Wars... no kidding...). The behind the scenes material is the same as the Making of Star Wars video released with Faces-- only narrated by Mark Hamill.

Hi, all- I’m fairly new here and still learning the ropes. While I was at home digging through tapes for the Ghostbusters preservation over on the Misc thread, I recently came across my old VHS copy of the CBS airing of A New Hope (best I can figure it was for the ten year anniversary in 1987?) which includes specially filmed bumpers and behind the scenes material during the feature. Not to mention the very dated and entertaining commercials from head to tail.

Is this video pretty commonplace or is there anyone out there that needs it? Seeing everyone’s awesome projects they’ve been working on, I almost wonder if I should put an edit of it together?
