sounds like a review by skyjedi2005...(kidding)

_Star_Wars_

                        by Kelvin Thompson

_Star_Wars_, yet another entry in the recent spate of "Space Operas," is
a bad, morally empty movie.  Look, quick!!  It has lights!!  It has
zooming spaceships!!  It has laser flashes!!  It has explosions!!  Look
 closer, and it has nothing.

The plot of _Star_Wars_ is certainly nothing new: a bunch of good guys
try to overthrow an evil space empire.  Ruling the evil space empire
are an evil count, James Earl Jones (a Negro), and an evil spaceship
 commander, Peter Cushing (_Dracula_A.D._1972_, _The_Curse_of_
_Frankenstein_).  Among the good guys are a princess, Carrie Fisher
(_The_Blues_Brothers, _Shampoo_), an old warrior, Alec Guiness
 (_The_Man_in_the_White_Suit_, _Murder_by_Death_), a young warrior, Mark
 Hammil (_Corvette_Summer_, _Three_Women_), a mercenary, Harrison Ford
(_Witness_, _The_Conversation_), and assorted robots and aliens.

From its opening scene, where two spaceships chase each other around a
planet while trying to blow one another to smithereens, the movie loses
any semblance of realism.  The spaceships make swishing and humming
noises as they maneuver about, and their lasers make zapping noises as
they fire -- all despite the fact that it has been scientifically proven
that there are absolutely no sounds in space.

In another gaffe later in the movie, a robot supposedly manages to go up
and down a staircase, even though it is quite obvious that it is
structurally impossible for the robot to do so.  The camera cuts away
just as the robot gets to the staircase, but the viewer is again jolted
 by the obvious impossiblity.

More important than any scientific error, however, is the glaring lack of
any moral statement.  In a time of mass starvation in central Africa,
terrible human-wave battles in the Middle East, repression of civil
rights in the USSR, legalized racism in South Africa, and rampant
terrorism everywhere, this movie just hums merrily along in its
 rose-colored glasses.

For example, when Hammill, the supposed hero of the movie, sees the
burned corpses of his parents, he responds by turning his head sideways.
No tears, no shouts of outrage, just a crick in the neck and they are
forgotten.  Later, when an android buddy of his is discriminated against
in a space-bar, he accepts the wrong without a blink.  Late in the film,
when an entire *planet* full of billions of sentient beings is
annihilated, the good guys just sort of go, "Gosh, that's too bad."  The
bad guys, of course, smile cruelly.  These kinds of responses to murder,
discrimination, and genocide certainly do not encourage the kind of
consciousness needed to overcome today's problems.

_Star_Wars_ contains a lot of action sequences, so it will no doubt have
a strong draw on today's young people.  Nonetheless, parents should make
every effort to keep their children away from this morally bankrupt movie
and direct them toward a film which takes a useful stand on some of the
issues facing our world.  And, naturally, all ethical adults should stay
 well away from it themselves.

Wrong.  I'm not a filmmaker, nor a formal student of film, but I can tell you that I watch films differently than the general population (as evidenced by what I consider "good" as compared to what is popular).  Certain films move me emotionally in the same way that a great piece of music does (and I'm not a musician, either!), and have moments that I have great appreciation for.  For me this goes beyond mere "entertainment".

i should have emphasized the words "MOST PEOPLE",

you're not one of them, of course that doesn't change my point..

Art is the manifestation of creativity. What difference does it make if somebody throws their creativity at a canvass and produces a painting, if they jot down their creativity on paper and make a novel, or if they use their creativity to make recordings of people acting out scenes to tell a story.

Can you really form a distinction between art and entertainment in most cases? What other reason do we visit an art gallery for if not to be entertained? Why else do we listen to Chopin or Mozart? There is a fine line between art and entertainment, if there is any line at all.

i agree with your logic to some extent..

however, for me, actually creating a drawing or making something creative is something

i can do, and enjoy, and learn from .......its within my realm of being able to do it, that

forms my appreciation for the masters.

i've never made a film, editted a fan picture, or worked with film (i have  taken photographs

though)... which is why i have such a hard time grasping at the essentials of film,

movie appreciation, editting, etc, etc (i have messed around with sound production though).

most people will never make a film, let alone grasp the concepts of what goes into it,

which is why, unless you are in filmmaking, or a student of it, appreciation for it is

very low on the list of priorities.

i am saddened at the fate of some of the projects on this board, and the appreciation

for them... i feel puggos work with the 8mm, and now with the 16mm versions are probably

to me the most important, and only reason i still come to these boards.... yet, they are buried

under the discussion of other edits (no offense to adywan), bashing lucas, and other topics

about why the PT/SE versions are bad, etc, etc...    where's the support? why aren't there

thousands of people heaping praise on them, getting them, and being excited about them,

instead of nitpicking their quality? why aren't more people involved in learning more about

improving the GOUT stabilization script, or learning about conversions to HD, or being

involved with the color correction issues? i'm not that much of an expert with video, but i

want to learn, and be involved, instead of constantly complaining about something i

don't have.. i wish more people came to this board with the hope of learning, instead

of tearing down something that already exists..

maybe it's just easier to complain, and never get what it is some are looking for (OOT/OT),

it gives them a reason to self-fulfill their prophecy of being disappointed in Lucas..

One of the most successful games in the history of SW, really? That is pretty sad. Do you have actual statistics of this from somewhere? Or are you just saying that it is? Not that I don't believe you, but it is surprising that this would be the most successful, since there have been some very successful ones in the past that kicked this games ass. I suppose the fact that it was released on every modern platform sans the PC (which is soon to come, no doubt) probably doesn't hurt its success any.

well, we're still waiting to hear back (if ever), what the deal was on where he played it..

anyways, just google 'force unleashed', and sales, and you'll find a lot of articles, like:

http://kotaku.com/5053914/star-wars-the-force-unleashed-selling-by-the-bantha+load

basically, it moved 1.5 million units, and has about 4.3 million total, they're pressing up more

copies to meet the demand.... you're right, there are other Star Wars games that have sold

more units, but this will be up there with them..

Hi G-Force wonderful topic here. One thing that has always made me very angry was the transfer GL provided us with for the originals on GOUT dvd. I'm so glad that there is something we can finally do about it to make the best of what we have.

Can I ask how I can do this image stablization, like maybe step by step? I've been reading this thread but not much of it is making any sense to me. Excuse me for the newbie intellect when it comes to this kind of thing. :-)

Thanks

1) get a copy of avisynth

2) download all the addin filters mentioned

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/GOUT-image-stabilization/post/316847/#post316847

from here : http://rs155.rapidshare.com/files/111299252/GOUT_image_stabilization_required_plugins_package.rar

3) rip a copy of the GOUT

4) apply script, and using encoder to get finished product

(for an older version of the script, i put in what all the filters do here:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/GOUT-image-stabilization/post/325424/#post325424

all the tools are mentioned in this thread, best thing to do is

jump in and start playing around with all the tools, if you get

stuck you can ask questions here, and people will be happy

to help you...

What exactly is the point to your continued posting of poorly done scans? Just admit that you are never going to get these done professionaly and that this is just a personal fun thing for you to scan through these prints ....I just don't get it...not only are you potentently f***king up a nice print but didn't you recently delete all your posts and posted pics and stating that you were going to your own private forum? Please explain?

you really need to actually read some of my replies some time, i'll say it again

1) this thread is for 35mm trailers, i got a trailer for 'Star Wars' and was trying to figure out

which one it was ............ this has nothing to do with the other prints i have, that's in a separate

thread..

2) posting pictures might have led someone to tell me which one it was

3) i've never watched the trailers for 'Star Wars' so this is all new to me

4) scanning the trailer is about the least damaging thing i could, and i will also be sending

this along for getting this transferred to HD

5) for the 10th time, i've said the other forum isn't ready and up yet, i have a lot of time

on my hands since i'm not working, so why not do it now, and not later when i won't be

able to do it all

6) the deleted pictures and posts were concerning the transfer, i've been told for legal

reasons to remove those, so this board doesn't get affected

7) i don't care whether or not you think i'm going to get them transferred professionally

or not, that's my business, obviously other people care, and you don't, so why bother

checking these threads and wasting your time..

i know you're not going to bother reading this reply either,

so i'll just keep posting more pictures anyway...

thanx puggo for the most intelligent reply i've read on this board in quite some time..

actually the retort wasn't meant for you, it was for meilr..

but since you answered, thanks again..

i agree, 'art' is a relatively subjective term.....   i actually like 'physical' art like

paintings, sculptures, etc a lot more... i go to museums, look at drawings, works

of art, etc..

it's hard for me to take, film/photography, and other newer media as 'art', although

to some people it is considered just as important..

to me, it has always been relegated to 'entertainment', and a casual hobby that

really doesn't impact the way i look at things...

that's why i was so critical about people that are not in the film industry, that study

things for the sake of studying them... where is the application to non-film industry people?

YOU on the other hand, are applying your skills, as are other faneditors, some successfully

(adywan), and most of the others , not so much.... but at least they're trying ...

that's why telling people to study these movies is probably a losing battle, that was

my point..

telling them to preserve a movie because of the entertainment, and enjoyment value

to me is more valid (at least that's why i would do it).... since we get the actual pleasure of

watching it .......  i derive very little critical and artistic merit from watching 'Star Wars', because i don't view it from that perspective as a 'serious' film that was a commentary on society from the 70's... i was actually around at that time, but i was too young to intrepret the significance of it...

Well, hate to get involved in this, but it could be possible that he simply rented the game from a video rental store.  Just had to play devil's advocate.

you could be a jedi mindreader, or we could actually

wait and see what he says? even if it was rented, someone STILL paid for it,

so Lucas still gets the money either way...

on a side note:

with the immenent bluray release of :

-------------------------------------------------

indiana jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull

the clone wars movie

are these just a testing ground to see how well they

will do? i'm pretty sure indy 4 will do well ... seeing how

huge a success it was in the theater..

but since there's no other plans for any of the other

movies to come out.... why bother? (or maybe episodes

1,2,3 are coming out on bluray in the future? )

besides you can already download 1,2,3, 4(SE),5(SE),6(SE) in highdef for

free already, so why buy them again?

my point is, if they're really not looking into bluray as a future format,

and the trilogy has been re-released again for the third time on DVD later this year,

what exactly is everyone looking forward to?

I don't give a crap about how many awards SW won. I don't need a film to win awards for me to like it. Of all the stuff in Puggo's post that I quoted, why did you decide to pick on that one line?

well, you're the one who agreed with it,

if you didn't , you should have said so a lot more clearly...................

I also quoted:

Puggo wrote:

As such, every cultural, historical, and artistic sensibility that I know of demands that it be preserved in its original form.  Students of the history of cinema should be able to study it, for example.

why don't you explain why exactly should this movie be studied?

i don't see any reason to... it's just a movie, that some people liked in 1977..

are you studying it? are you student of the history of cinema? is anyone here?

IF a real preservation was done, as it should be, nobody here would mind if GL or anyone else wanted to make updates and release those too.  However, since GL is actively stopping it from being preserved, it is natural for film lovers to be angry.

how exactly are you being stopped? you seem to have done some awesome preservations

on your own.... i don't exactly feel like i'm being stopped either (yet)....

doesn't seem to be having much of an effect on the ongoing countless number of projects

on this board..

also, how many film lovers are angry here? i see mostly people that are DVD lovers

that are complaining ... all the film/vhs/laserdisc/ced owners don't seem to be complaining

as much..

Puggo - Jar Jar's Yoda said: Star Wars was a fantastic, academy-award winning 1977 movie.  As such, it is a cultural icon for the late-70s.

Well said, Puggo. That's the way I feel EXACTLY!

honestly, who cares what awards it got? i never did, and the academy awards are pretty

meaningless anyways, so what difference did it make that it got them?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Best Art Direction-Set Decoration  - > does anyone care? unless you're building something
Best Costume Design -> same, who cares? do you design outfits?

Best Film Editing -> couldn't tell then, and still cant..

Best Music, Original Score -> nice to listen to, but then so what?

Best Sound -> again, only good for sound editors
================================================================

Best Effects, Visual Effects -> finally, one award that makes sense..

so out of all of those meaningless awards, they didn't really affect anything

afterwards did they?

the real impact was ILM, and all the other technologies that came out of it,

studying the film didn't really help anyone much then, or now..

i don't see that as much of an argument for preservation,

i'm sure there are others, but winning awards isn't one of them.

the common person only cares that they liked the film for whatever

reason, popularity, the story, the plot, the dialogue, etc... and it

didn't win any of those anyways...

This game would have been awesome if you played as vader throughout the entire game and hunted down the remaining jedi.  You Know what episode III should have been, and what got basically moved to the Dark Horse comics purge.

But of course the clone wars and jedi purge had to be told in a multitude of media to maximize profits.  It is all about the greenbacks for Lucas, the story is completely secondary hell you don't need a script as long as you have cgi, lol.

so, did you actually return it, if you thought it was so bad?

you know, there's this thing called a preview, or a trial version so you don't have to keep

wasting your money..

but maybe you enjoy complaining about it more..

either way, Lucas made his money..

and this is one the most successful games in the history of Star Wars games..

i'm sure they'll be more..
