Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal
Time

was checking out the color corrected version

of reel 1 this weekend.. looks very cool.

there's a few anomalies, like a small red

tint at the bottom of the initial chase scene.

leia looks great.. there are some scenes that

are naturally darker than you've seen before:

r2d2 and c3p0 in the escape pod sequence.

some of the r2d2 in the canyon and the jawas..

(finally get to see what the coloring on that looked like!).

there a lot of natural grain throughout, but most of it

will remain.. basically a lot of dust and dirt to cleanup.

it's a bit more prominent then i thought, but we were

prepared for it. very exciting getting the first previews.

i can honestly say, i've never seen star wars look like

this, colorwise and retaining the feel of THE original

as it was actually meant to be. definitely a step back

in time.

Is it going to be a BD50 or 25?

we're thinking bd-25,full frame mkv (at 1080p, that will have to

be corrected for aspect ratios for people with projectors) , and a dvd-9,

as the main sources,

and i'm sure there will be dvd single layer,mp4,

and avi versions from those.

for those without myspleen access, there's people

here that will give you invites. file sharing sites aren't

too reliable anymore.. i guess someone could put it up

on rapidshare/mediafire/zshare or something, but it would be pretty

slow unless you had a premium account.

I hope those extra twenty minutes is where they kept all of the characterization, or explained why "Checkov's" self-surgery pod existed and was only programmed for a man when it was in Theron's personal quarters. If it was for Weyland, why? She wanted him dead, no surgery could have saved him from anything anyway.

i like the idea of the possibility that

she was an android also... she didn't

need much time to recover from stasis,

and she was able to choke and handle

david pretty well.... who knows what

happened when she told the ships captain

to come by her quarters?

the stuff we are using on parts of the

film is called filmguard..

http://www.film-tech.com/products/filmguard.php

there are some issues people have with it,

but for short term, it is fine.

since it cleans the image, the optical track

gets improved also!

i'll post some examples,

star wars related and other ones. maybe some

images too.

the death of film (again)
Time

the story of the death of film is still going on..

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2012/06/the-silver-screen-no-more-distribution-of-film-to-cease-by-2013-in-the-us/

excerpt:

----------

A recent report from IHS Screen Digest, a company that analyzes trends in digital media, says that movie studios will cease producing 35 mm film prints for major markets by the end of 2013 (the US, France, the UK, Japan, and Australia are considered "major markets"). IHS predicts studios will stop producing film for the rest of the world by 2015.

The death of traditional film—outside of arthouse films and the occasional film student project—has been a long time coming. Film reels are more expensive than digital storage, degrade faster, and are physically much heavier to ship and carry around. Ars noted in 2006 that Canon and Nikon were taking losses on film cameras. We reported a few months later that some filmakers felt that digital film produced better movies, as it allowed them to keep the camera running while actors performed, rather than spending money on long rehearsals, only shooting when necessary.

PROMETHEUS was (Alien 0?) NOW NO LONGER SPOILER FREE.
Time

saw this with a friend today.

we both thought it was pretty decent.

i have no problem with the story or it being

a prequel, and i liked all the overtones to the

original alien. (which is my favorite, along with alien 3,

didn't like aliens)...

for what they tried to do, it was a nice tie in

the mythology and origin of a lot of questions.

very satisfying to know about a lot of it.

it wasn't that tense or scary really, everything

that happened has been seen before, unless

you've never seen the originals. as a standalone

movie, i don't know if it works. someone asked

me if they should see it, but since they haven't

seen the original alien, and they liked aliens,

i told them to stay away.

Time

some more details..

--------------------------

1 - sound for a few reels is mono,

so we'll be reconstructing what we can of that.

stereo version should be fine... also the spanish

sound is coming along well too.

2 - most of star wars is done, with a few more reels to

go. because its in good shape, the color fixes are not

that hard, and quicker to do.. there is minimal dust and

dirt cleanup going on.. but it won't take too long

i've seen rough previews of most of the  reels,

and even those look amazing,  and the tests on cleaned up

   versions look even better.

3 - there probably won't be a 2nd version (the english red reels),

[if there is, it will be an archive version done much later.]

because the quality is not that good. however, there are

scenes with less grain, that may be incoporated with the better print.

4 - empire strikes back will be done next, but at much slower pace.

we found some film restoration material that cleans the film so

before it is transferred it removes a lot of the damage and dirt.

so we will rescan some of the troublesome parts again to save

time from doing it digitally. the color correction is mostly done,

its the cleanup and restoration that's going to take quite awhile.

5 - there's some early leads on return of the jedi also,

but thats a LONG way off.

we should be on track for release this year barring

any surprises. stay tuned.

It means that you've attended a screening in 1981 instead of 1977.

-1, the title Episode IV - A New Hope did appear on the published script of the film in '79, film prints with the redone opening did first show up on the '81 re-release.

yeah,

i guess i never did see the episode 4 in the crawl then.

until it got put into the special editions...

the 79 re-release was a special showing with a preview

of empire.. but it didn't have it..

well, i only saw it in the theaters twice.

once in 77 and then again in 79 i think

before empire came out.. so seeing the

episode number made sense then..

DOES ANYBODY EVEN BUY T.V.'s ANYMORE?  WHEN I WANT A T.V. I JUST DOWNLOAD IT OFF OF THE INTERNET.

you would like this laptop..

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2012/06/toshiba-debuts-widescreen-ultrabook/?comments=1#comments-bar

it's superwidescreen also:

A 21:9 aspect ratio Ultrabook will be arriving in stores soon, alongside the next generation of Toshiba's standard Ultrabook, the Portege Z930/935. Both notebooks will use Intel's Ivy Bridge processors and come with SSDs, backlit keyboards, and at least 7.5 hours of battery life.

The 21:9 Ultrabook, named U845W, is definitely an odd duck. Our initial impulse was to point and laugh—it seemed to be made exclusively for people who compulsively seek wider ground to watch 2.35:1 aspect-ratio movies, an odd niche to cater to. But Duc Dang, senior manager of product development at Toshiba, pointed out to us that customers could also use it to display a regular 16:9 movie side-by-side with a browser. Um, yep, we've tried to do that (with limited success) on our laptops.

The screen, which still has 768 lines of resolution (a bit lower than we'd like on a 14-inch laptop, but serviceable) can also show Excel cell columns from A to AA. The machine certainly won't meet everyone's design needs, but when you think of it as a portable dual-monitor setup, it seems less silly. The notebook has a resolution of 1792x768, weighs 3.5 pounds, and measures 0.82 inches thick. Ethernet, HDMI, and 3 USB 3.0 ports adorn the sides, and the computer gets around 7.5 hours of battery life.

Scratch that, it's the Beautiful Women thread, because negative1 claimed in there that he's dating a Maxim model.

actually, she's NOT a maxim model.

she submitted her picture for the hometown hotties,

she does amateur modelling... i've taken quite

a few of her by myself... she's actually turned

down maxim before because they didn't pay

enough.. but this time it is just for fun.. she's

done print, magazine, web ads.. she was even

in a retro-star wars one for the hasbro lightsaber

recently.. all kinds of stuff..

its pretty surreal, and actually, i can't believe i've been seeing

her for almost a year and a half now either! maybe i've

just been imagining it! having too much fun to really

let it sink in!

sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction..
