Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

I'm still downloading, but I've used µTorrent's stream feature to at least check out the first few minutes, and I'm bummed out now: The German track isn't in sync!

I have no idea how this happened... I've extracted hairy_hen's 70mm track from the Decpecialization 1.0 and synced my German track to it... how can it be that it's out of sync now? Damnit...

That's true, but we can fix it on our own ;-)

The German track seems to be delayed. I noticed it during the appearance of the Star Wars logo and after the explosion of the Death Star. Between those two points, the track seems to be in sync sometimes but that's nothing new. Is there any possibility for you to measure the length of the delay? There also seems to be some noise error at the end of the track, but I can cut this error away on my own.

So anyway, before I start the encoding, can anyone tell me with certainty that if I encode each reel separately, I will then be able to join them (by whatever means) without recoding the video and keep the Blu-Ray compatibility and not lose any frames?

I'm not really sure but some time ago, I discovered several "timestamp problems" after merging two movie files. I don't even remember the format and doubt that both processes are comparable but since you're still waiting for hairy_hen's audio track and found out that the encoding error wasn't random I suggest not to take any further risks.

Oh, I was under the impression that the MKV would have all possible audio tracks and foreign dubs onboard as well... don't you think that a GB more or less wouldn't matter at that size?

Now I owe you something for already having your fixed audio track :-)

This one should fit with the video track without any further corrections if I'm not mistaken?

Well, all the emails were sent, so if you were picked, you should know by now. I added imoortalseed to the list, so three places still left. Anyone wanting to take care of RS, perhaps someone with a paid account?

How about collecting all those links and publishing them at thePARADOX as  interchangeable download sources?

If what I have been told is correct, these releases by Harmy are NTSC GOUT synced. The official US NTSC GOUT release has a French soundtrack and Project Threepio have the French subtitles.

It is a relatively easy task to add those to any GOUT synced video.....

No, they are 23.976 fps.

just seems like everyone would want to watch the actual actors performances.  Not trying to be captain movie snob or anything.  I just watch a lot of Cantonese language films and I won't watch if they are dubbed.  Can't stand it.

I can just speak for the German dub, but it's actually a really good one. Heinz Petruo is on a level with James Earl Jones and in fact, both are just dubbing voices ;)

That's the thing though, those were mistakes that someone made back then and millions of people saw the film with those mistakes. And again, garbage mattes always seem to come up in these kinds of discussions and I always have to repeat that I only try to remove them because in optimal projection conditions, those wouldn't have been visible, and if I knew they were always visible, I'd probably be putting garbage mattes back where they were removed in the SE, just like matte lines or colourless lightsabres.

Good point, but I still think this goes in contradiction to the goal of getting away from the poor GOUT quality. Perhaps we should compare it to the burning mark ;)

Well, I've already done that a couple of minutes ago ;) Those lines were included in the theatrical mix, so I think they should be in there for the Despecialization.

I've used the German Blu-ray center channel, filtered it to match the dialogue quality of the GOUT audio, and put the handful of missing sentences back into the mix. I'd say it sounds seamless.

I'll encode to AC3 and upload the whole thing, so you guys can judge for yourself.

That's awesome! I don't think I even need to listen to it because I trust your abilities. Am I right that the German GOUT tracks of TESB and ROTJ don't miss any lines?

MeGUI might be the most powerful tool to make x264 encodings but sadly I must say that I have no idea how to tweak the settings to get the best results.

Well, I think nobody does.

Laserschwert said:

I sent Harmy the links. Trimming was only something in the milliseconds range and only for TESB and ROTJ.

The only problem is that the German GOUT of SW isn't perfect as it has some lines of dialogue missing. Those missing lines could be taken from other Laserdisc sources and the Blu-ray though.

Many thanks for your efforts. But we are talking about the same thing - delaying the audio track, right?

Those few missing lines shouldn't be a huge problem as they aren't essential and different lines were missing in nearly every release. For example, the GOUT of TESB has more lines than the 2004 DVD or the 1995 THX VHS release. Do you really think anybody should extract the lines from DTS-HD 5.1 and mix them into the 2.0 track? This could cause even more damage.

The lower pitch is correct. When it was brought from film (23.976 fps) to PAL (25 fps) for all the home video release before the Blu-ray, the pitch got higher, which was, of course, wrong (but never fixed). But the framerate isn't the only thing that needs fixing to make it sync up with Harmy's versions - at least TESB and ROTJ need some trimming as well. You should check the German preservation thread about all this :)

Thanks, this would mean everything's alright now. Trimming = delaying the track for 1 or 2 seconds in that case?

Are you going to provide Harmy with the track? Otherwise, I'll do so.

I've already edited the German GOUT-audio to be in sync with Harmy's version and at the correct pitch (which the GOUT is not). So if Harmy is interested, he might add this to his release, of course.

Putting the tracks in sync with HD frame rate is not the problem. I stretched them with MeGUI when DeEd 1.0 was released. Maybe this resulted in a somewhat lower pitch. Do you have any experience in correcting that pitch? Thanks in advance.
