... and since that time, I've been hired by Lucasfilm to work on a couple of Star Wars projects, so that'd REALLY be pissing in my own pool, wouldn't it?

In any case, my stance, stands - I can't distribute it. But I will be having a couple of private screenings when it's done. The rest of the work I publish to inspire, inform, and entertain. It's not a perfect galaxy...

The bolts in that shot were originally painted with, um, questionable convergence. The more you work on that shot the more you see it... as for the look itself, it was actually quite difficult to get it right, especially by the time the bolts are way up at the tip of the hull. To get that right, I actually had to paint on full 2k-sized plates and scale them down. I think that one shot alone has something like 250 layers in my AE comp. I don't miss it.

I did it by roto-ing the original bolts themselves with a mask in After Effects, duplicated, and blurred the masks in 2 or 3 varying radius layers. This way the original shape is preserved, and you have explicit control over the core/glow percentage. There was no workable template; each bolt needed basically a different setting for each frame. Like everything else in Legacy Edition, it's 99% roto. But you can't beat the quality.

Best,

Going very well.. there's a huge section of the film - all the Death Star stuff, basically - where the color base is anybody's guess. It's sometimes greenish, sometimes bluish, and trying to balance that all out to one unified palette has been challenging. What color IS Tarkin's uniform, anyway? Jumps around pretty heavily. Each scene can be balanced unto itself, but sometimes the way I balance it makes it tricky to adjust to a master coloring, which is largely unknown. Do you know how many shades of greenish-white, bluish-white and pinkish-white stormtrooper armor is? I do. But as I close in on the final, the predominant and most likely coloring becomes clearer. Updates to the site regarding this process would basically be maddening, as I'd have to revise the entire section about every other day. So instead, when I've got it all nailed down, I'll present a truncated version of the process taken to get there, minus months of missteps and re-thinks. Large sections are nice and tight, though; tighter than on any previous release version ever. It's nice to see.. or maybe I should say, it's nice not to see...

On the site you mention that the STAR WARS logo recedes too quickly on the DVD - first of all, thanks for pointing that out because I would never have noticed it otherwise.

You replaced it with the receding logo from one of the foreign angles. Did it bother you that it doesn't seem to be from the same source? The lack of curve on the top of the ST, for example, and the sharpness of the curves... it bothered me enough to interpolate new frames rather than borrowing from another angle. I can post some screenshots later tonight but you probably already know what I mean.

Believe it or not, I missed this one! I'll have another look, but I've done this logo in Illustrator already, so it wouldn't be difficult to just redo the recession myself... Good eye!

How's the process going? Are you finding it necessary to make adjustments to EVERY FRAME of film or are there segments or scenes that really don't need any touching up at all?

Rooting for you,

It's going... updates pending. I can't say every frame needs adjusting, since sometimes there are small sections of the film that adjacent cuts get adjusted to match - that is, some areas become the templates themselves. But no frame is going unchecked, and more often than not there's something to do.

Thought on de-SE'ing the DVD
Time
David -

Per your request, I've looked at the list of 68 changes you've made and I feel strongly that you and I approach this sort of thing from nearly polar opposite ideals. You removed a shot of Vader because he appears 'pantomimish?' You've removed 3PO's blink under the assumption it was a mistake? You did a Mark Hamill impression and added a line of dialogue? I appreciate your kind words regarding the Legacy project, but I have to tell you, your list of 68 changes, by and large, gives me the creeps.

But, I'll bet yours will be torrent-able, so that pretty much settles that, doesn't it?

any pointers regarding this.

These and similar sections will be straight swapping of footage from other versions. As for which version they would be coming from, I can't say just yet.
