I haven’t seen Bill Nye Saves the World but the main problem… he differentiates sex and gender.

Oh dear… you should watch the ice cream cartoon he did.

“You can’t change people’s sexuality!” - Video ends with straight ice cream being turned gay.
"No one can make you stop being strawberry, Strawberry. - The whole group makes Vanilla stop being vanilla.

Wait, haven’t watched, is Bill Nye promoting sexual orientation conversion or opposing it? Because one of these makes him a piece of shit and the other makes you guys the piece of shit.

He is promoting both.

How? Do I really need to watch this?

You don’t. The point is supposed to be that sexuality is like a variety of ice cream flavors and the punchline is that the “straight” and “homophobic” (if those words even apply to this juvenile and ridiculous cartoon) vanilla ice cream realizes that it ends up liking experimenting with other ice cream. It’s just a really bad joke. It’s not in favor of sexuality conversion camps.

C’mon, mfm, NDT’s framing was obvious. The article is generous in treating NDT as merely naive. He’s allowed, as are you or anyone else, to engage in such rhetoric but that doesn’t negate the trolling quality.

It’s not trolling. It’s a joke! If he said, “Christians needs to shove Bible pages up their assholes every Christmas morning because Christmas sucks ass and is a national embarrassment even more shameful than Mel Gibson’s love life,” then that would be trolling. You’ve got low fucking standards for trolls if you think that NDT’s comment was trolling.

That is what it says,

“Yikes. What he failed to take into account was that there are lots of people out there who take Jesus’ birthday very seriously. Not long after that, he got hit with a hate-storm of comments, accusing him of being anti-Christian. Though all Tyson wanted to do was share a bit of info he thought the public was unaware of, he simply showed his ignorance of how passionate people are about their religious holidays.”

but you are right on your last sentence. That was bad phrasing on my part, I should’ve said that the author loses credibility, not the article. Also, it’s not trolling to tell the fucking truth. So you’re not allowed to talk about Isaac Newton on Christmas Day anymore because it will offend assholes on Twitter? His point wasn’t to “troll” Christian snowflakes. The word troll is so overused. He was obviously just celebrating a figure that he respects more than the figure that Christmas celebrates. I guess that makes you a troll and a bully now. What a joke.

I haven’t seen Bill Nye Saves the World but the main problems people have with him is that he’s harsh on climate change deniers and he differentiates sex and gender.

The problems I have with both NDT and Nye are that they should stick to teaching science and quit dumping their opinions about philosophical and cultural matters. It’s like they can assert, because they are science celebrities, other not-scientific random crap they opine.

Again, what cultural matters are they even talking about that are so objectionable? I’ve yet to get any examples other than Christmas, which again, what he said wasn’t offensive. And as Frink already said, why does being a scientist automatically mean that they should never talk about anything else? I’m sure your profession isn’t related to the any of the shit you talk about on here or any other social media that you use.

It’s like when people point out that religious leaders shouldn’t tell you how to vote, and that politicians shouldn’t tell you how to pray. They should stick to science and pull the stick out for other matters that are not their field.

Religions are tax exempt and for that reason their leaders shouldn’t be telling us how to vote. Also, religious knowledge implies no political credibility whatsoever. Being a scientist, on the other hand, actually does imply that they’re generally far more knowledgable than most people. This doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be right on all cultural or philosophical issues, but they’ve got a better shot at being right than most people do. And politicians shouldn’t be praying at all, they be representing us in our government like they’re supposed to.

Just like you and I can assert, because we log on to a forum, other not-relevant-to-our-respective-day-jobs random crap that we opine!

I seriously have no idea what the problem is here.

The problem is they are famous and use their fame as a soapbox for [you-don’t-know-what-you’re-talking-about]. People give more weight to their opinion than is warranted because of that popularity.

It’s not like people are giving Jessica Simpson weight because of her fame. I think they’re giving their opinions weight because they (Nye and Tyson) are more intelligent than the average person.

Neil is a real scientist. And making fun of Christmas on Twitter doesn’t make him a dick.

Sure it does.

No it doesn’t. If you want to see someone being a dick about Christmas, I’ll do it for you. Christmas is a shithole holiday for hypocrites. That’s being dickish, and I won’t apologize for it.

You have more of an argument with Bill Nye being a celebrity more than a scientist, but you can’t deny that he is extremely intelligent and knows what the fuck he’s talking about.

I’ll deny both things.

Well, then you’re wrong.

I think the, “you’re wrong because I said so” thing is better kept in Politics 😛

It isn’t just because I said so.

Tyson comes across (to me, at least) as kinda pretentious.

Maybe it’s just his Twitter persona, I don’t know.

I don’t think any of that is a problem. People care more about football then other stuff, most people don’t have common sense, there’s nothing douchey about his description of Leap Year. I guess I have higher standards for what constitutes a douchebag.
