Religion
Time

The idea that any church has more to offer seems weird to me. What does that have to do with truth? Who cares if a religion offers more? Shouldn’t all you care about is whether there’s sufficient evidence to justify a belief in it? At least protestants don’t offer nearly two millennia of failure to help the poor while their religious leader lives in a solid gold palace. Not that protestants don’t have their share of con-artists taking money for personal gain, but it’s on a smaller scale.

The Terrible Restaurant Experience Thread
Time

I think cuisine falls under the category of culture. Share your horrible restaurant experiences here. They can revolve around anything that ruined the experience, whether bad service, bad company, bad food, bad atmosphere or whatever else, so long as it’s bad.

One time I was berated by a waiter at a Chinese restaurant for not ordering food with shrimp in it, even though I told him I was allergic. (Granted: that last part was a lie, but he didn’t know that.)

To put my terrible advice more eloquently:

If you’re looking for a relationship because you want to share life with someone interesting and intelligent and helpful, then go for it. If you’re looking for a relationship because you’re depressed and think that a relationship will make you less depressed, then don’t because I have a strong feeling that relationships built on that mindset will not work.

I shouldn’t have generalized earlier, I admit.

If there’s anything sitcoms have taught me, it’s to value your friendships over romance. The girl of the week will disappear, but the supporting cast will be there to the end.

Don’t take advice from sitcoms.

That advice is half-right.

I would like to know in what respect it’s wrong.

The part about the “supporting cast” being there to the end. People move, people die, people outgrow each other. It happens. Friendships come and go too.

Basing your happiness entirely on a partner is a really bad idea. It’s pretty obvious that a relationship based on that premise probably won’t work or, ironically, be happy. Also, finding a partner in order to make yourself happy seems like bad reasoning to me.

EDIT: And you left out the divorce and ensuing custody battle in your list of pleasantries.

I really appreciated a group of strong female characters who weren’t defined by their gender. Whenever a film has an all female cast and then chooses to define the characters based on their femininity or the mere fact of them being women I think it kind of defeats whatever feminist purpose they thought they were achieving.

I never go into the politics thread because I don’t give a shit about politics, much less American politics, and I feel I miss out on most of the drama that goes on within this forum by doing so.

Yeah, it’s great to be able to ignore that section whenever I feel like it and still enjoy the threads here. I was a bit resistant to the change, but it makes sense and overall I think it was the right choice now.

I think you missed the point.

Yeah, I don’t get it.

I wish I’d been instilled with a strong work ethic growing up. Perhaps if my maternal grandparents had been in my life. . . .

I sense a paradox here. Isn’t wanting (or “wishing” in a sense) to work essentially the core element of having a strong work ethic? There’s seems like an irony to wanting to want to work.

EDIT: I guess it isn’t even ironic so much as it is unhelpful.

Don’t worry, it didn’t. I just wanted to make sure that I didn’t come across that way because my cavalier attitude toward violence might’ve made it seem that way. There’s absolutely nothing more frightening (to a child anyway) than being physically attacked by an adult. You can’t even try to defend yourself and it’s even worse when it’s a parent that is supposed to be protecting you.

If “under any circumstance” includes when quoting something, when referring to the word itself, or when writing or playing a character, then yes I absolutely would say that that person is being childish and can’t understand context. I don’t understand why that’s unreasonable.

I think that most black people would get what I’m saying here and not shrug me off as some ignorant, mean white person. I, unlike most white Americans, actually do acknowledge the racism that still exists in this country. I actually am outraged by our racist justice system and our militant, guns-a-blazin’ police forces. I actually am outraged that our nationalistic buffoon of a president and our nationalistic population condemn and slander black athletes as unpatriotic for daring to peacefully protest during the sacred national anthem (which apparently these nationalistic assholes think is more sacred than lives of this country’s citizens). I actually do care that our bought-and-paid-for politicians vote in favor of policies that result in the unjust mass-incarceration of black people so that the private prison industry can make some extra money. I actually am in favor of protesting in the streets demanding that our systems change. So hopefully me not wanting to pointlessly substitute a child-like euphemism in order to water down a word that I consider hateful won’t taint my image in the eyes of black America.
