Are the Prequels Even Worth Watching Once?
Time

I personally don’t hate the prequels, but I haven’t seen them in close to ten years and doubt that I’ll see them again for as long as I live. As far as I’m concerned, the prequels were just devices to suck a few hours of my life away with no reward and I doubt that if I weren’t such a big fan then I’d have even given them second chances. I don’t think that the general public is missing anything by not seeing them, but should people who are big Star Wars fans even bother with them if they haven’t seen them already? Especially people who are knew to the franchise with the recent movies, and only know the OT and the ST.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **

Well, that makes it official. Do Han and Leia get married in Bloodlines? Ben would be the only heir to the Organa royal family (if Leia is still recognized) so I would have thought unless they were married, he would have taken his mother’s (or grandfather’s) family name.

Kids almost always take the dad’s last name if the parents aren’t married.

DESPECIALIZED EDITION QUALITY CONTROL THREAD - REPORT ISSUES HERE
Time

Empire 1:37:29 - Sky darkens above Luke suddenly

1:47:23 - Missing shell casings on hallway ground.

0:20:16 - panel on the floor is lit at Vader’s feet. This is an SE addition.

Is there a wobbliness to the 35mm footage used to replace GOUT scenes in Jedi? Primarily on Lapti Nek and Yub Nub (and a little bit in one shot of the Sarlac, where Luke is standing on the diving board above it).

What special features do we think will be on this release if one happens? Empire of Dreams in HD? Deleted Scenes? The vintage documentaries? The Holiday Special? A feature on Lazy Padawan and the PTAS crying as people overflow second hand DVD shops with their 2011 Blu-Rays?

I came across someone in 2015 who was working for the company that made and was at the time working on remastering Empire of Dreams in HD. I bet that’ll be something we’ll get.

speaking of steelbooks, judging by Amazon listings, looks like they’ve been discontinued.

Edit: gone at Amazon, Walmart listing limited quantities for some titles.

Interesting. I know Devin Faraci was a creep, and I don’t want him back on Birth Movies Death, but I can’t help but wonder what he would’ve said about this. He seemed to have about a dozen of connections within Disney and Lucasfilm.

One thing giving me hope is that we’ve gotten a reissue of the 2011 blu-rays every two years, which means we’d be due for another one this year, which just happens to be the 40th anniversary.

So, unless they want to give us the same discs yet again, they’ll come up with something entirely new to sell us.

I was so, so sure we’d be getting something new in the lead-up to TFA in 2015, and then all they did was steelbooks (although the movies were finally released individually at least). Even if they don’t bother with a UHD release just yet, I can’t fathom how they would repackage the blu-rays yet again without something, anything, that isn’t just a fancy container.

Supposedly that was the plan, but they were having problems so they postponed it. I really hope that’s right.

That might be some distorted version of the rumor that the OUT had been restored, but the original film needed “more work.” Hence “this conversion” not being used.

Good point. One guy on Steve Hoffman’s forums has been saying since at least February of 2014 that the OUT would be released in 2015 (and then 2017 because ANH needed more work), hence the need to request a scan from the Library of Congress.

Here is some really old news, but no one has mentioned this before. Keep in mind that we have no idea if this guys “sources” are even legitimate or not:

“Since last Friday, I have heard from two disparate sources that the word is those conversions [Reliance MediaWorks] are not going to get a release. That’s the rumor.”

Speaking on the Fox and Disney matter, while Fox definitely still has distribution rights, it would seem that Disney outright owns the others at this point. This is evidenced by the digital releases and the 2015 repackaging of the complete saga, which only lists Star Wars as “20th Century Fox Presents Star Wars: A New Hope”.

That’s really interesting. I remember speculation that the reason the digital releases didn’t have Fox’s logo was because online distribution didn’t fall under the umbrella of distribution rights that Fox owned for the other two. That was the case awhile ago, but I think that a physical copy would credit all six to Fox.

Probably jumping the gun here, but if LF/2oth C. Fox do indeed plan on a home video release of the OT this year (edit: OUT or otherwise–the latter would be valuable for preservation efforts), what are the chances it will be available in the UHD BD format? I know Disney doesn’t yet support the format, but Fox seems to be pushing it pretty hard (especially with the sci-fi/action genre). As this would be a “distributed by 2oth C. Fox” release, might we see it released in 4K for home media?

Maybe, but I hope that the OUT won’t be only available on 4K UHD discs. I don’t have a player.

EDIT: OUT aside, if Fox wants Star Wars to be a format-seller, then that might prompt them to be more willing to play ball with Disney regarding the rights to the Original Trilogy. They lose Empire and Jedi pretty soon, and having rights to the original Star Wars in perpetuity is nice, but not as worth it as you might think without the rights to distribute any of the others. Since Fox has to get what they distribute from Lucasfilm (owned by Disney), then they’ll have to get the new product from them; that’s most likely why all re-releases of the OT have been lame reskins of the 2011 copies. Maybe working out something favorable in the long run to Disney will help Fox maximize whatever time is left for them to profit off of Star Wars. This would be good news regarding the OUT because it gives us the films with the Fox Fanfare at the beginning, which was also on the 4K restoration Gareth Edwards saw. (He mentioned it.)
