The rating system is awful and arbitrary, who cares what words they don’t like? Actually, the rating system legitimately is sexist. Exposed breasts of a woman will get you an R these days while the exposed chest of a man wouldn’t even push it to PG.

Have you visited a public pool or a non-nude beach? Have you noticed at those places men are topless but women are not? Men’s and Women’s bodies are different. A man topless is not nude. A woman topless is nude.

I’d be a lot happier if everyone kept their clothes on since most people, male or female, are quite unpleasant looking without garments, but there is no reason for male toplessness to be considered less “offensive” than female toplessness.

I don’t think it’s that ridiculous to have a prequel ahead of TFA.

I understand people not liking TFA (especially if the rehash stuff bothers you) but I don’t see how anyone can claim any of the prequels are better-made movies.

If you enjoy them more, I guess I understand that…sort of.

I think that the PT had a little more of a creative vision to it, as failed and sold-out as it was, whereas I don’t see any of that creativity in TFA, or Rogue One for that matter. As far a movie goes, yes TFA is much more watchable, which I suppose is all that counts for most movies, but when you’re never going to watch either TFA or the PT again, that counts for less.

Not in my usage it doesn’t.

How do you use it then?

I guess that’s kind of a bad example on my part because it’s a rare word for me to use. I don’t really like the sound of it. On rare occasions, I use it to describe obnoxious people that can’t help but vocalize how gutless they are.

But don’t you see how “gutless” feeds into that stereotype?

I guess my hangup is that there is one specific gendered insult that is supposed to be far, far worse than any other, even other female-gendered insults, and is unacceptable in any context for very vague reasons of nondescript power dynamics and vague references to “history”. I know about the historical oppression of women, but why this word rather than any other?

I’m pretty sure it’s the same reason that “fuck” is a lot worse than “shit”.

Perhaps to a soccer mom it is, but like yhwx said, they’re kind of on par with each other. I’d say those two are considered worse because of what they literally mean, but then that brings up the hypocrisy of people considering “crap” worse than “shit” so, like I said, the only consistent way to handle this stuff is to either say they’re all okay, or they all aren’t. OR even better, you take it on a case by case basis. Did the person saying it use it in a way that made him asshole? If no, then move on. If yes, then, well, move on but remember that that guy is an asshole.

Fuck is definitely worse than shit. Which gets you an R-rating?

IIRC, the F bomb used to be an automatic R, but I think you’re allowed just one in a PG-13 film these days. Not sure how Spaceballs got away with one and kept it’s PG rating.

It’s been speculated Spielberg dropped some mild profanity into E.T. just to avoid the then dreaded G rating.

It was in Adventures in Babysitting a couple times.

Kind of, but I don’t think it matters because the words are separated from the genders in my mind. To quote a brilliant man, “Calling someone a pussy isn’t the same as saying ‘Don’t be such a woman.’ Calling somebody a dick isn’t the same as saying ‘Don’t be such a man.’” No one in this day and age with a shred of decency or intelligence believes that women are inherently gutless. I actually just realized why I hate all this language policing. It’s basically because we, and by we I mean people that aren’t complete morons and aren’t complete and total piles of shit, have to watch what we say because stupid people believe stereotypes. I hate stupid people more than anything on earth, and to me, judging people based on their color or gender is essentially the stupidest, most ignorant thing that a person can do. I don’t do that because I’m not stupid enough to believe there’s merit to racism or sexism, so why should I change up my arbitrarily-deemed-offensive insults because other people are stupid enough to believe a stereotype that I myself don’t believe and everyone that knows me knows I don’t believe?

I don’t think it’s that ridiculous to have a prequel ahead of TFA. I didn’t like Rogue One either but at least that one was pretty straightforward and contained in itself, which I can appreciate and easily makes it better than the PT. I don’t get the love for TFA. It wasn’t my thing. I’ll the Last Jedi a chance though because I do like the new trio of leads but I don’t have high hopes.

For all its problems I’d still rather watch Jedi ten times in a row than watch the PT once.

It should be up to us. We speak the language. If people were willing to take the time to realize the context and intent of people’s use of words then it would help a lot.

By “us” I meant the two of us. It’s not as easy as telling everyone “hey, that word that offends you? don’t be offended anymore.”

I try to be cordial with people, but I don’t want to police what I say for fear of someone that I’m not even talking to taking offense at it.

I know about the historical oppression of women, but why this word rather than any other? I don’t get it, I probably never will, I don’t particularly care to, I just find it a little interesting. Also, what about context? You’ve brought it up before. If I live in the UK is it suddenly acceptable? If a UK person moves here are they suddenly “problematic?” Which culture should submit to the other? The UK has a pretty similar history of sexism as the United States does so why is it okay there? I don’t like language policing.

My main problem is that I don’t buy that Rey is a Mary Sue more than Luke was, and I don’t think he was either. If anything Luke was more of one because he was just a farmhand and practiced pilot that suddenly could hold his own in a shootout and blow up Death Stars with the force. At least Rey was established as a really tough person that could take care of herself long before she discovered the force. I don’t even like TFA yet I feel compelled to defend it against these hackneyed criticisms.

Well even jokes depend on intent. Also, let’s be honest, the distinguishing factor between a comedian and just an asshole is whether he’s funny or not. As for words, it’s all a matter of intent. When it comes to racial insults, I say none of them are okay. When it comes to gendered insults (keep in mind I’m talking about the words themselves, not insulting people with them because of their gender), they’re all okay.
