It just occurred to me earlier today that I am one miserable man.
It just occurred to me earlier today that I am one miserable man.
I can’t wait for Thanksgiving because the sooner Thanksgiving happens the sooner it can end! 😉
Yep. Worst day of the year for me. Every year I get to spend the whole day in a cold heartless environment, my Thanksgiving dinner is usually a bag of chips eaten as fast as I can while hiding in the bathroom, watching people pretend like it’s a holiday to be thankful while acting like greedy assholes.
Yeah. Black Friday is a perfect example of how despicable people are. They pretend to give a shit about others for a couple hours as they stuff their faces and then go out to trample others in an attempt to lay their dirty hands on some cheap pile of shit they don’t need.
I can’t wait for Thanksgiving because the sooner Thanksgiving happens the sooner it can end! 😉
Yep. And Democrats need to call on him to resign, not just refer it to an ethics committee.
You know, I’ve seen comments that Democrats are handling these things better than Republicans. While there is a bit of truth to that—Democrats aren’t just outright denying allegations—it’s still a weak response that they’re giving.
Al Franken isn’t even denying the allegations.
If I may, since we’re arguing equality, why does the culture tell us men shouldn’t like cartoons originally targeted toward female children?
Oh great. I don’t know why I’m addressing this, but that has nothing to do with equality.
Yes, there are female Star Wars fans, but not as many as there are male Star Wars fans.
You should have said that from the beginning.
Regardless, you might ask yourself why.
Why are there more female fans of Sex in the City than there are male fans? Why were there more male fans of American football than there are female fans? Men and women sometimes have different tastes.
The latter is another one that you’re not quite as right as you think you are on. Rabid football fans are split almost evenly between men and women these days.
But is it a problem if more men than women like Star Wars?
Why should it be?
There’s no reason why Star Wars should appeal more to men than women
You don’t know that.
Star Wars is a universal story about good vs. evil, hope vs. despair, and selflessness vs. selfishness.
Honestly tell me why should Star Wars appeal to men more than women?
You boil the story down to that to suit your argument, but there’s more to the films than just that.
Yes but that’s what they’re about. There’s nothing inherent about “Star Wars” that should be more suited to a man than a woman. The films aren’t about the male experience specifically, nor should they be. They should be for everyone.
You might say, well the OT only has Leia and then only a couple very minor female roles. To which I say yes, that is definitely a problem with the OT.
It is not the job of Star Wars to cater to all.
Why the fuck not? What is it about Star Wars that requires it to cater to straight white dudes only? Star Wars is supposed to be a universal story about the human experience.
That’s what it was from the beginning.
Yes, there are female Star Wars fans, but not as many as there are male Star Wars fans.

Of course it isn’t.

I guess if you like video games.
I get it. TPM is the most juvenile.
I tell everyone what they should and shouldn’t be offended by.
Citing equality doesn’t really fit, because they are not equal. Saying a woman should be paid as much as a man because a woman’s ability or intelligence is equal is not the same thing as saying women’s bodies, which are not identical to men’s, should be treated identically. Having a woman cover her breasts does not lower her social standing or make her to be inferior to a man.
Let’s turn the tables. Is the argument that a certain part of a man’s body should be censored because it’s different from that part on a woman a valid argument to you?
I don’t think it is censored because it different. I think there are reasons other than simply it being different as to why it is censored, and those reasons are potentially sound.
Women’s breasts aren’t just different-and-that’s-it. Men have sexual responses to them. Women have clothing that accentuates them. Women and men both treat women’s physical bodies differently than women and men both treat men’s bodies. Women have different attractions to men than men do to women, and so arguing that men’s bodies and women’s bodies should be treated equally (or identically) “because” isn’t reason enough to not treat the differently.
You don’t think women have sexual responses to men’s exposed chests?
are now going to try to tell me that women’s sexual responses to men’s exposed chests = men’s sexual responses to women’s exposed chests?
And now you’re suddenly the expert on women’s sexual response to men’s bodies.
I am not an expert but I will bet my life savings that
women’s sexual responses to men’s exposed chests ≠ men’s sexual responses to women’s exposed chests?
Source? That’s quite the generalization.
I have to have a source for that?
Yes. You must now have a source for every generalization you make about women.
I don’t think he was generalizing, I think he was talking about erections. I have no idea though because he won’t explain himself.
You know, I’m starting to think this thread was a better idea than y’all said it was.
Because it somehow helped?
Not that I can see.
It could have helped.
By getting more diverse people to join the forum?
The thread could have diagnosed the problems that are getting more diverse people to not join the forum, and therefore, put the structures in place that would help more of them join the forum.
And as I said, discussions about diversity are useful. It raises awareness about the issue, which is important.
Its a Star Wars forum. Its not going to attract women.
I’m not even going to read any farther to see if anyone else responded yet.
What the fuck, man?
what?
The thing you said
find huge place somewhere gather every Star Wars fan in the world there, how much you want to bet that number of men there won’t be greater than the number of women there. Yes, there are female Star Wars fans, but not as many as there are male Star Wars fans.
You’re probably right, but definitely not as much as you think you are. Judging by pictures and footage of Star Trek conventions, there seems to be a pretty even split in men and women. I doubt that Star Wars is much different, but I’m sure it’s slightly more imbalanced.
Warbler, if you’re gonna keep saying demonstrably false things about what women like and don’t like, I’m gonna keep insisting you don’t actually know any women.
They’re pretty easy to meet. I hear that 1 in every 2 people is a woman.
Only if you live on Earth. On Tatooine there aren’t any women.
Owen got lucky and married the only one. I think there was a girl in a deleted scene though, but that’s not canon.
Look at things like the Ghostbusters remake or the Ben-Hur remake
I will continue to defend it. I enjoyed it, I laughed, so that made it worthwhile in my book.
Like the Junglebook remake, though, how many people really substantively remember it, other than the obvious fact that it came out recently. Even if you liked it, does your mind honestly go to that film when you hear the title Ghostbusters? Although to be fair they seem to have retitled the remake Ghostbusters: Answer the Call to distinguish it from the original on home video, but still.
“A woman’s body isn’t treated as anymore obscene than a man’s.”
“Tell that to the top half of a woman’s body.”How is this a confusing or controversial response? Is it wrong? Men can walk around without a shirt, women can’t.
female breasts = private part private parts need to be covered up.
But why? You refuse to answer that question.
Why does the question need to be answered? American culture equates female breasts as being private parts.
Demanding the answer to “Why?” is as good as asking “Why not?”
American culture, like all other cultures, is pretty dumb. Who cares what it equates?
My point, AGAIN, is no one is making any objective argument as to why women are harmed or oppressed in any way by wearing bras or bikini tops when and where men are not required to.
Who the hell cares about whether’s there an objective argument? Seems freaking pointless to me.
So what you’re saying is that because there is no factual evidence to back up your argument, that acquiring any is declared a worthless endeavor?
You haven’t brought any facts in either other than unrelated historical context.

That’s a problem.
Its a problem a that this place is a Star Wars forum or that Star Wars just doesn’t attract women?
The latter.
That “problem” goes beyond the scope of just this forum. It not going to change anytime soon. Men and women just like to watch different kinds of movies/tv shows.
My sister liked to watch Freaks and Geeks with me like 15 years ago or whenever that show was on, and pretty much that whole thing is about adolescent boys. My sister is a girl. She liked that show. Some shows are obviously geared towards genders, mainly kids shows, but most family and adult entertainment is geared towards a mixed audience.

I didn’t say they were. I don’t like requiring people to do anything that makes no sense so I’m opposed to this double standard. You don’t have to find something oppressive to thinks it’s stupid!
because nobody wants to see any of these people topless.
Nobody? Pretty sure some men want to see women topless.
I can’t believe that I have to point this out, but nudity outside of very specific contexts is incredibly unattractive.
fact: some men pay to see women topless.
lawl.

It really doesn’t take that much effort.
Kinda is when you have no confidence whatsoever when it comes to women. Seriously, most people I hang out with say that I’m a lot of things, but I’m not boring, but whenever I’m around girls I’m so nervous about appearing to be an asshole that I just become a hollow boring shell of myself, which leads to me having quite a few girl friends, but no girlfriends.
I have no confidence and have a very low opinion of myself but when I was about 15 or so I decided that I really didn’t like most people. I don’t say that to be a grouchy misanthrope, that’s just how I started thinking about others. So even though I have no self-esteem, I learned then not to care about how I appear to others. Why should I care about how people judge me for being myself since they probably suck just as much I do? And I’ve had several relationships since then. Most them lasting over a whole month! My point is, I’m horrible with people and am horrible with relationships and am horrible at everything, but take my word for it, it isn’t that hard.
JEDIT: This was a stupid, boring and sappy post, but I’ll leave it up anyway.

What the fuck, man?
I know right? What about the women that are on the forum? Also, I’m pretty sure there’re a lot of women on the Force dot net.
How about everybody should wear a top when in public? Can we just agree on that and let it go?
Do you wear a top when you go swimming?
The only place I ever swim is at the pool on the private property of a member of my immediate family, and no, I don’t wear a top. And this’ll make you hate me again, but I don’t even wear a bottom in that swimming pool!
Women’s bodies are treated differently than men’s bodies, in part, because men are physically and hormonally affected differently by physical appearance than women and because American culture at large grew out of a more puritanical lifestyle.
I don’t care much about what affects people, I don’t care about culture, and I don’t care about puritanical lifestyles. I also really hate the idea of acting differently in order to shield someone that you don’t even know from something harmless that they don’t have to look at or listen to. Most people are pretty stupid too, so should we make sure everything that we say is comprehensible to an incredibly stupid person? By this logic we should.
To say that things should change because they’ve always been the same is equally as arbitrary as saying that things should remain the same for the same reason.
I think things should change when there is no logic behind the existing standard.
Just because you are progressive and believe women should not have to wear swimsuits that cover their breasts, that does not make their acceptance by the culture objectively wrong and worthy of change. As far as not wearing a bra, I’ve been married long enough to know that there is something to be said for the support they give with regard to any amount of exercise.
I’m not progressive and don’t really care about any of this. I just don’t like the argument behind your side.
“A woman’s body isn’t treated as anymore obscene than a man’s.”
“Tell that to the top half of a woman’s body.”How is this a confusing or controversial response? Is it wrong? Men can walk around without a shirt, women can’t.
female breasts = private part private parts need to be covered up. how is that confusing?
This is possibly the most juvenile thing that you’ve ever said on this forum. Funnily enough, I actually agree with you that “private parts,” if that’s what we have to call them (I didn’t realize we were six year-olds), should be covered. Let’s be honest, most peoples’ private parts are quite gross looking and should be covered. In appropriate areas, like pools and beaches, there’s no reason for men not to have to cover their chests while women do. It’s an arbitrary double standard. The reason you refuse to explain the rationale behind your thinking is because there is none. So go ahead and go on refusing to elaborate beyond repeating that you’re right without using proper capitalization or punctuation.
