People saying Vader was fan service in RO: wasn’t he originally supposed to have all of Tarkin’s scenes before they gave the go-ahead for the CGI? I think he originally had a much larger role.
Plus, I think he fit just fine in the film. I actually think, unlike the ST, RO gets better with each viewing.
His appearance in itself wouldn’t be fan service if he did something of value to the plot. Mon Mothma and Jimmy Smits weren’t fan service. They had a tangible purpose in the film. I’d have much preferred Vader to the cartoon Tarkin though. His lightsaber battle actually might have been better had he been built up in the film itself and not just thrown in there under the assumption that he’s the most badassest villain in the galaxy.
You could argue that RO has a little bonus 4th act after the death of the new main characters to bridge the film to ANH. And the final Vader scene does add an extra obstacle at the very end when you think the battle is won. Sure, it’s hardly detrimental to the final film, but it does allow RO to end with a burst of action and suspense after the main story has been wrapped up. SW movies can’t just be movies anymore, there’s too much lore. If the escape of the Tantive IV had been omitted I’m sure people would have complained about that too.
They could have and should have shown Leia’s ship escaping without the cheap thrills of Darth Vader and his lightsaber but it wouldn’t have included the “lore” of Darth Vader using his lightsaber. The “lore” you refer to is mostly just iconic images that have to be included on screen. The lore of Star Wars in the literal sense of the word would be the stuff you get in the cartoons and novels.
As for it ending on a burst of action, I think that shows how week the main cast of characters was. If this is supposed to hold up as a stand alone movie (and I see a lot of people claiming that this is a good way to introduce new people to the franchise, even before watching the OT), then why would it need a pointless burst of action after our loveable cast has made the ultimate sacrifice and has died in an admittedly beautiful shot of the Death Star annihilating their spot on the planet? If their deaths are so impactful, doesn’t a burst of action from a character with no clear bearing on the plot attacking faceless characters that aren’t even that sympathetic diminish that ending? Also keep in mind that if someone had never seen the OT, Vader and CGI Carrie Fisher would mean nothing to them since the excitement we were supposed to gain from their appearances is based solely on their iconic status from the original films.
I completely forgot this isn’t even the RO thread. Sorry, I’ll be done now.
