The Empire Strikes Back "1980 Theatrical version" Reconstruction - Adywan (Released)
Time

Getting a theatrical version of ESB in HD would be a monumental effort I reckon.  Some of the shots are digitally altered e.g. Lando and Leia running through Cloud City.  These could be retouched to remove the SE effects.  Some shots don't exist in HD at all, e.g. parts of the Wampa's cave scene and when Lando announces the Imperial takeover of Cloud City.  These shots would be incredibly difficult to reconstruct in HD.  Moreover if you listen to Adywan's youtube interview he says that removing one of the rontos in Mos Eisley in ANH:R was one of the most painstaking changes he had to make.  So even any digital retouching would be hard work.

All things considered unless Mr Lucas releases the theatrical versions in Blu-Ray format I don't think we'll be seeing them in HD ever.  At least we have probably the best theatrical version of ESB on DVD right now.

Correct me if I'm wrong but IMHO as most people now have HDTVs, that means they will be watching this upscaled to HD anyway, only the quality of the upscale will be worse than if it was done in a computer. But I see your point, the LQ elements probably will stand out less, if the quality of the rest is also lower.

That's not a safe assumption, not everyone is loaded enough to be able to afford an HDTV.

Ten minutes in, and I am STUNNED by the clarity of this.  I don't think the official DVDs look this sharp and clear.  Plus, it's bright!  I can actually SEE details now.  Simply said, it is AWESOME!  Thank you, Adywan!  This is a beautiful 30th anniversary gift.

I agree, it's excellent quality.  While I appreciate the efforts of the guys fixing the GOUT, it's a bit like polishing a turd as the GOUT dvds have terrible picture quality.  The picture quality can only be so good.  I'm also astounded at how the theatrical scenes were integrated, you really can't tell the difference in quality.

Ady have you ever thought about standing for Parliament?

OK, no matter what I've tried, TehParadox just won't let me register. I must have registered there before (probably a long time ago as I don't remeber it), because it said my e-mail was already being used, so I tried their "forgot your password" thing but it's been several hours and I didn't get the e-mail. So I just tried registering again with another e-mail and it worked but whenever I log in it says:

you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

  1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
  2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.
  3. The page you are trying to access does not exist.

And it says this even if I open pages like Forum, Donate or Forum Rules

I'm getting desperate. Could someone tell me what to do? Or better yet, just PM me the links? That would be so great...

PM sent Lord__Vader

Adywan, you are a crazy man! The prospects of seeing an anamorphic version of ESB Theatrical are pretty enticing. Unfortunately, newsgroups and torrents aren't options for me. Can anyone point me to other options? Rapidshare? Megaupload? PIF? PM me. Thanx. And Thanx Ady.

Same here :-(

If you two had been paying attention you'd realise your request has already been fulfilled.

This is amazing.  I've just finished watching it.  The picture quality is superb and the integration of the theatrical scenes is totally seamless.  Thanks a lot for this Adywan. This is now my definitive DVD version of the theatrical ESB.

Also there's room on a DVD5 for someone to add menus and subtitles if they want to, I would if I wasn't totally useless with multimedia stuff!

Your request has been fulfilled Krazyscotsman.  Only Episodes I, IV and V are available so far.

The EP V colour corrected 14gb mkv is astonishing.  It's the best version of ESB out there.  Haven't watched my retail 2006 Theatrical DVDs since Adywan released it.

Episde I - The Phantom Menace AVCHD Torrent uploaded to 'you know where'.  Just search for 'Adywan'.   Thanks once again to Adywan for all his great work.  I'd appreciate it if anyone who has the files could help me seed.  I'll seed only until the weekend.

If anyone wants the 14 gig high bit rate version of ESB on torrents, then I'll need some help seeding that.  If enough people offer to help I'll torrent it otherwise I can't as my upload speed isn't great.

I've already PM'd you but just to see if others are interested, I'm volunteering to seed like a mofo. I wants it. :)

What I meant was people for initial seeding.  There's no way I'm seeding a 14 gig file on a 768k up connection on my own.  It's simply too inconvenient when you have daytime upload limits and throttling.  Yes it is a bit selfish I know.  If other people are willing to help with the INITIAL seeding then I'll torrent it otherwise it isn't going to happen I'm afraid.  It took me 3 days to seed the Episode I AVCHD (about 8 gig) and that was with other people helping to seed.  You'll be better off asking for blanks+postage or getting a usenet account.  Some usenet providers provide 'download block' accounts.  To be honest I don't know how popular a torrent of the 14 gig mkv would be anyway, there's hardly been anyone else asking for it besides you.

Invites have been closed at this place for some time and won't be open for the forseeable future either.  I'm not a member I found this out on the forum of another private tracker.  Also asking for invites in publicly accessible forums is a sure fire way to get yourself and your inviter banned from any private torrent site you're requesting invites for.

I've not been able to find a torrent for Phantom Menace anywhere.

I'd be prepared to upload a torrent if a few people here would help me seed.  The only thing is Demonoid is down and I'm a bit scared of uploading torrents to TPB.  If anyone can suggest a decent site to upload torrents to then let me know.

I'd help seed after I downloaded. Unfortunately, I don't know of a good site to upload to other than demonoid or TPB.

I'll upload it sometime after 9pm UK time on Wednesday.  I'll have to redownload it off usenet cos I remuxed the AVCHD to an mkv file.  Also I don't think the high-bit rate version of ESB is available on torrents, would anyone be interested in that?

thats a lot of damaged files. what usenet provider are you using? Ep1 was only posted a couple of weeks ago so it should still be complete even with an ISPs service.

 usenet.com server, downloading through grabit.

i would switch your provider if its giving you that many incomplete files with something so recent.  i use astraweb. i'm only paying $11 per month for their unlimited service through their special offer. its very rare i get any incompletes

I second this.  Also Astraweb are increasing their retention to 365 days.

According to the grabit website it should do all the repairing and extracting automatically for you.  Personally I use alt.binz.  It's never let me down.  Perhaps you should import the nzb and partial files into alt.binz??

Yet another quality release from Adywan!  Thanks a lot Ady.  For those of you that don't have AVCHD hardware and want to watch it on a PC please note that the TPM is split into 3 m2ts files.  You'll need to use Tsmuxer to join them.  Open the first m2ts and then use the 'append' option to add the other two in order.  Then select 'm2ts muxing' to create on big m2ts file.  You can then open the new big mt2s file in Tsmuxer, demux it and remux into an mkv if you want to.

Just out of interest Ady, will there be a high bit rate mkv of your colour-corrected TPM?  The ESB high bit rate encode looks magnificent.  Thanks again.

I could also help out and I live in the UK.  Sent you a PM adywan.  I'm really happy that this 14 gig mkv will soon be out.  The picture quality was impressive.  There were far fewer if any h.264 artefacts in the sample you posted a while back.  I will also be able to help out seeding a torrent of this.  If anyone can suggest a good tracker to upload it to.

I'd say use Demionoid

I will do, I need to wait till it's posted to usenet first though.

just search for "star wars avchd" on demonoid and you'll find them

That was the first thing I tried, which was how I found ANH, then I tweaked it to search for Empire.

Edit - OK, searched for "adywan" and I found it.  I figured they would be named similar though, which is what was confusing me.  ANH said "STAR WARS IV" but ESB said "Star Wars Ep 5".  ANH also had "AVCHD" in the title, ESB didn't.

Sorry my fault!

Anyone have any suggestions where I can find the EP V torrent?  I was able to download EP IV in a little over a day, but I've been downloading EP V for 3 days now, and I still only have 20% of it.  Thanks!

Same here.  I've done searches on Demonoid for "star wars V avchd" and "empire avchd" and am coming up blank.

I uploaded the torrent, just search for adywan, my username on demonoid is similar to my username here.  I also uploaded it to tpb, you might be better off getting it there as there's more seeds/peers and dht, peer exchange are enabled on that torrent.

Any news on the 14gb higher bitrate mkv versions? I don't really have a use for AVCHD releases and would rather a nice big mkv file for my htpc. The sample posted a couple pages back is awesome!

Will it be for both ANH and ESB:R? When can we expect them Adywan?

 Hi Adywan,

I was wondering about this too the other day.  I know you did have problems with your upload limits imposed by your ISP, which were delaying this.

i've decided just to stick to what the project was originally which was AVCHD's so i'm not going to bother with mkv high bitrate releases. I've just got too much on at the moment to be doing several versions for each movie.  if the rest of the saga ever gets completed is anyone's guess at the moment

Fair enough, is there an easy way to convert the AVCHD's to an mkv? I'm quite happy to do that at my end obviously, I just find a mkv a more convienient container (Although i Do have a PS3).

Can't wait for ROTJ. I'm sure, as soon as its done its going to be prompting a lot of Star Wars marathons around the globe :p.

http://jamestombs.co.uk/2008-07-20/how-to-convert-avchd-iso-to-mkv/535

As you're transcoding to a different container only there will be no loss of video or audio quality.

Can anyone help me?  These inspired me to go out and get a PS3(I wanted one anyway, I swear) and I still cant get a version worth watching.

My IMAC G5 has failed mid-burn with 4 DL discs so I gave up on that (I was just burning the ISO right to the disc and burning like a data disc).  I then put the ISO right on my external hard drive and of course the PS3 wouldnt recognize anything on that (I guess I would need to reformat...Fats or something...whatever) so then I spent 40 bucks on a converter program (AVCWare Mac Video Converter) in an attempt to convert it to a DVD format so I could at least Burn it as a standard DVD on popcorn.  Well 10 hours later I converted it to DVD format but it only created a VOB, not the Video_TS folder that I had anticipated.  Popcorn wont recognize the VOB so I stalled on that.  I then just tried to put the VOB file on the PS3 because I read they can play those but the movie stutters and is cropped (not full wide screen).....I think I abused the green too much in my 20s cuz as much I try to research these things I just end up clueless and frustrated.   What generous soul can offer some advice?

Stace

If it's failed mid-burn with DL discs then it's probably messing up when trying to switch to the second layer.  What media are you using?  I've had problems with all DL discs apart from Verbatim DVD+R. Note the +R and not -R.  These are the ones you should be using as they are the best quality media if a bit expensive, at least here in the UK.  Also do NOT burn the ISO as a data disc.  By the sounds of it your just creating a data disc with one file on it.  The ISO is an image file, when it's properly burned there should be several files and folders on the disc.

I've no idea about Mac burning apps so someone else will have to help out with that one.  The burning app must support DL and udf 2.50 filesystems.

You'd have more luck with Imgburn on Windows or cdrkit on Linux if you ask me.

ps. After a bit of searching it looks like Toast for the Mac supports AVCHDs, don't know if it's PPC compatible or not though.
