The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time
Been away a while, hi everyone. Cool reviews there - and I missed all the excitement with the eBay thing. That script looks amazing!

Slightly off-topic, but I think this was mentioned earlier in this enormous thread at some point:

The Kells film looks as if it's coming along well. I really like the style of it, and I look forward to the final version!

Hi ocp, delighted to see that my scans reached you at last - and I'm glad you like them. You can thank my dear friend R.M., who had to do a little "unofficial" ducking and diving where he works as a scanner operator to get that done for me as a freebie. I bought him a beer or two for his trouble, of course!

Interesting story about the MTV show. I may take a look if I get time - bit hectic at the moment, going through a "new job" thing. Sorry to hear about your Internet connection, hope you get high speed again soon.

I've had a better look at the scans now at home, and although the resolution is great there are some Moire patterns on the larger areas of colour, as he didn't use descreening on his scanner. Not sure how much of a problem that is - can it be fixed in software? I've had a go with Paint Shop Pro, but couldn't improve it much. Thankfully it doesn't really show up on the title, so if ocpmovie needs to use that for anything he'll have a great version here (I'm making your copy as I write this ocp!).

As for putting it online, I will try to arrange something soon.

Great news - I met my friend the scanner operator today and he gave me an utterly beautiful set of scan files of that poster. He hasn't descreened them, but I think that can be done in software. They are amazing! He says he scanned it in 8 parts and stitched them together, but you really can't tell. I'll get a copy in the post to you ASAP ocp.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, ocp. I wish I could cheer you up by sending you the poster scan, but I'm afraid it isn't done yet. I have left it with my friend, who said he'll try to do it within a week. He's quite busy, it seems...!

I've watched "I Drew Roger Rabbit" twice this week. Every time they show Richard in the vault with The Thief, the hairs stand up on my skin. He was (and still is) such a respected and admired figure in the industry. I know business is business, but how could they? How could they take his masterpiece from him and carve it up like that? It's a tragedy. A great, great tragedy.

In my dreams, he's secretly finishing it and plans to release it next year using his own money...

Oh by the way, I LOVE "Seaside Woman". It's absolutely delightful - never seen it before!

Quick update on the poster: I have found someone who can scan it in A3-sized sections for stitching together. I think that will be OK, as I believe this covers the whole width, so only one or two horizontal stitch lines will be present. He's away this weekend, but I hope to get this done during next week.

The Mk II edit looks great, ocp! There's a lot more quality stuff to see in there. Am I right in saying that even the Brigands scene got spruced up? It seemed clearer to me. Seems like a much better audio mix too. There were some rather loud peaks in the original that have been brought down a bit, like the witch shrieking as she swings on the rope.

I'm breathless with anticipation!

Hi again all, I'm back from a two-week break. I'll get straight onto my friend with the scanner and see whether he can help with getting that poster scanned. Thanks for the email ocp, glad you like what I sent.

I found the Marx Bros clip very interesting indeed. I really admire that particular piece of animation in T&C.

My poster arrived today. Too late for me to get it scanned before I leave for two weeks tonight Still, I've got some photos of the logo so you can see it. ocpmovie, I'll send you a high-res version by email.

The whole thing is in very good condition - I'm very pleased! There are screen-print dots in the logo, and I'm not sure what quality you were after, but let's see what you think.

Thanks for posting that ocp - nice to keep up to date.

I have ordered the poster. The guy said it was in very good condition. Only thing is I'm not sure whether it will arrive before I go away (two weeks, starting Friday night). If it does, I'll do what I can to scan it and send it to you before I go - if not, that will have to wait a couple of weeks.

Interestingly, there was one difference between the two. The one I ordered has a tagline on it (something about unlikely heroes I think it was), and the other one doesn't.

I just went to the site to try that. I ended up in their eBay shop, and couldn't find the item. Perhaps that list was out of date

Edit: Just had another look. It's on CQout:

www.cqout.com/item.asp?id=1968177

Seems to be an actual auction, without a "buy it now" option. I've not used CQout so I'm not sure how it works. Also, I'm out of the country as from 29th July, and the auction ends on August 1st, so I'd have trouble paying in time etc.

I'll give them a call today anyway and talk to them about it.

I think the second item might be better than the first, simply because the first looks as if it has black tape stuck to the corners - but that might be nothing.

Don Hahn and daughter stopped by our
booth- met them briefly last year, but this time I talked to him a bit
more and said "Do you mind if I ask you about a rumor- The Thief and
The Cobbler restoration?"

I can't remember exactly what he said but it sounded like a "someday"
kind of project. He did tell me [and was clearly excited about it] that
they got ALL the artwork from Miramax and it is sitting "along with
Snow White and Pinnocchio" [in Disney's Animation Research Library,
where all art is stored]. "Beautiful Errol LeCain backgrounds", etc.

SO.... I asked him if he was aware of you and your efforts on a fan
restoration and he was NOT. I said you did an amazing job and that he
needs to see it. He joked that maybe he should hire you and I said YES!

My tail is wagging. A LOT! This is fantastic information. I really, really hope it's true that all the artwork was kept. Oh please, oh please, oh please!! And it's great that Don Hahn is now aware of your project. This could of course come to nothing, but I truly hope not. I hope that all your efforts have finally set a spark to the tinder. All we need now is for Dick to get behind it - and of course, that's the make-or-break element.

I shall be following this story for as long as it takes now. It's become one of my life obsessions. I was thinking of getting a bumper sticker made... Can you get those on CafePress, I wonder? Hmm...

Edit: Ah. Just realised that all the artwork from Miramax was kept. I guess that means that the Koreans may still have lost large parts of it?

I'm seeing a DVD twin pack floating dreamily before my eyes... Recobbled on one disc, Dick's version on the other Don't worry, I know it's just a dream. That would be a LOT of work for you!

You had a tough choice, and for what it's worth, I feel that you have made a good decision to include some Calvert footage in order to hold people's interest - much as I would have loved to see the storyboarded version too. At the end of the day, we are talking about an awareness-raising exercise, and those rely on word of mouth, which in turn relies on watchability (for the masses). A "purist cut" would spread like a forest fire among the "true believers", but only shoot a few tentative branches outside that central core of people. When I show my copy to anyone, I am careful to explain beforehand that it's been stitched together from various sources, some of them low quality. I even find myself mimicking your commentary, pointing out the good and bad scenes and trying to enlighten as they unfold. Then again, if they then went and showed the movie to others, would they do the same? Probably not. Hmmm... in spite of my praise for your work, I do find myself also hoping now that Dick doesn't get to see it

Glad you had a good time at Comic Con and met some cool people.

I've already burned about 30 copies of the Mark II cut with the old bread scene on there, so sorry guys, I will be sending those copies out first, and only updating the bread scene afterwards.

I don't want to update the cut AGAIN for the mediocre quality clips in this trailer grumble grumble grumble.

I'll be releasing the commercials and Warners trailer on their own disc, but I'll probably remove Clapperboard from it and reauthor it with other stuff, or something.

Anyway, yeah, good news eh.

Good news indeed! Must be great to have that bread scene fully animated at last

And I think it's understandable that you don't want to incorporate every bit of new stuff that comes your way - you'd end up working on this for ever.

I don't know whether my disc is destined to include the bread scene, but do you have any plans to make it available to those who don't get it - perhaps a torrent somewhere? It can't be that large...

P.S. I've blogged about this project here, if you're interested (not that my blog has a signifcant audience, but anyway... just trying to spread the word):

There's no way that would have been seen projected and there was no legit way for an average viewer to freeze it, so it was a little joke for the animator. It's just the attention to detail that is so amazing.

There are actually two places where you can see this. One is when the Thief flies towards us as two groups of one-eyes collide in mid-air behind him, but there's another, further back in the film, and I can't remember where I found it now, but it's definitely there.

it's a frame from the explosion when the witch lights the match :]

It is indeed. Well done! That sequence is very interesting in freeze-frame mode, I must say. I've often wondered how that kind of thing is animated, and it was instructive to look at it.

Actually, I've been freeze-framing quite a lot, and I'm making a list of interesting stuff that I've spotted... and there are quite a few things. One of my favourites is in the war machine, when a piece of wood with a crescent moon cut out of it flies past, closely followed by a roll of toilet paper, still on its spindle
