Star Wars: Frames

I'm seriously considering picking this up for the original trilogy frames really and would appreciate the thoughts of anyone that already owns this.

Please don't. This needs to stop.

I love the idea of apologizing for crappy image quality in a (fairly expensive) book consisting solely of images. That's how you treat your fans who buy all the crap you put out. Oh, wait...

Give the OOT the treatment it deserves and I'll have all the stills I want without buying this overpriced low quality BD garbage, thank you very much.

That's pretty funny. I'm not too worried about 'Zilla '98 having any influence on Godzilla 2014 though. There's been 6 Godzilla films made since that one and 5 of 'em are really good. Besides, Gareth Edwards has proven to be an actual Godzilla fan, not just someone who sees a money-making opportunity and TOHO is accepting this one as cannon, which gives me much faith.

I bet he was given loads of creative freedom and control over the project - the first time he's dealing with a serious budget, btw - by the suits who handed him their $150 000 000 in order for him to make this movie.

He may be a fan and he may have talent, but that alone does not a good movie make. So far I can say that Edwards seems competent, his approach - in theory - is fine, and that the teaser was absolutely terrible and filled with atrocious CGI.

Ray's Original Podcast Thread
Time

Any good film review podcasts out there? Sound quality isn't a priority as I'm mainly looking for good content. That means no Top 5s/10s/whatevers, no best ofs, no forced humor, as little filler as possible etc. The closest I ever got to finding a decent movie podcast was the review bits from this thing:

http://www.filmspotting.net/

The problem is, the reviews lasted around 20 minutes and the rest was absolutely worthless (Top 5 x, best movies about y, crappy contests etc.) so I just stopped listening at some point. Any recommendations?

Another thing I don't appreciate is all the prequel trilogy-haters stating their opinions as if they're fact. They hardly ever say "in my opinion..."

Step lightly, 37.   You'll get more rope than we would on your board, but there is a limit.  Careful with the accusations as well.

I really hope they're able to work out the plethora of other licensing issues that plague the series and release it completely uncut. That would be icing on the cake, and I'd definitely buy it.

You mean like the cameos, and some issue about who owns the design of that Batmobile?

I'd like to know this as well. I didn't know anything had been cut from the show in recent years...

Not in recent years, but wasn't it cut for syndication?

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Why such harsh responses to ScruffyNerfHerder's idea? It was clearly just a rough draft suggestion offered as a possible solution to the 8 audio track limitations Harmy's encountered. I think he clearly understands it's not the ideal arrangement, but it's better than nothing at all.

Hopefully the multiAVCHD lead will produce the results we want. Either way, thanks for providing food for thought, Scruffy.

It don't think I was harsh. Lumping all foreign dubs into a single release without even considering the inclusion of the original audio track is a terrible idea, and his saving space reasoning didn't make any sense. Instead of making everything more comfortable for everyone involved, it achieves the exact opposite: it needlessly complicates the situation, it satisfies only those who don't care for audio tracks other than the original to begin with (this includes the dubs as well as the commentary), and it creates heaps of additional work for Harmy on top of all that. Hence my criticism.

I could've been harsh if I decided to take the lack of English audio in that European release as a personal insult (this IS the Internet, after all), but I decided against it ;)

Hey Harmy,

It sounds as if most Blu-ray authoring programs have a limit of eight audio tracks. I don't know if anyone has suggested this, but if you can't put every language on one disc, why not make a couple of customized, regional versions like Hollywood does?

You could create, say a "North American Edition" with:

  1. 5.1   DTS-HD-MA   [English]        (1977 70mm six track mix)
  2. 2.0   DTS-HD-MA   [English]        (1977 35mm stereo mix)
  3. 1.0   DTS-HD-MA   [English]        (1977 35mm mono mix)
  4. 2.0 Dolby Digital [English]        (1985 Laserdisc mix)
  5. 2.0 Dolby Digital [English]        (1993 Laserdisc mix)
  6. 1.0 Dolby Digital [Spanish]        (1980 Latino dub)
  7. 2.0 Dolby Digital [French]         (1977 dub)
  8. 2.0 Dolby Digital [English]        (2004 DVD Audio Commentary)

    And a "European Edition" with:

  1. 2.0 Dolby Digital [German]         (1978 dub reconstruction)
  2. 2.0 Dolby Digital [French]         (1977 dub)
  3. 2.0 Dolby Digital [Spanish]        (1977 Castilian dub)
  4. 1.0 Dolby Digital [Portuguese]     (1980s Brazilian dub)
  5. 2.0 Dolby Digital [Italian]        (1977 dub)
  6. 2.0 Dolby Digital [Polish]         (1995 Voiceover)
  7. 2.0 Dolby Digital [Czech]          (1992 dub)
  8. 2.0 Dolby Digital [Hungarian]      (1984 dub)

Or something like that. A third version could have Japanese and the commentary tracks, etc. You could still include all the subtitle tracks on every version.

Releasing the Blu-ray this way would also make the file sizes smaller, as people won't have to download languages they don't speak.

I know this suggestion isn't exactly elegant, but I do hope it's helpful. =) As always, keep up the great work!

The original audio track should always be included as the default option. Do I seriously need to explain why?

Also, why is Spanish included in the NA version with French mysteriously absent? And what if, say, I want to grab the original audio track, because that's how I watch Star Wars, AND as a non-native English speaker I feel the need to have a shoddy European TV dub alongisde the original track for nostalgia reasons?

What if I'm crazy enough to feel the need to listen to the commentary, but I have the misfortune to not be Japanese and/or I want English audio as opposed to the Japanese dub? For that reason alone I'll have to download yet another version?

If you really want to split everything, the only sensible way would be to create a separate version for every language, basically. All English tracks plus the commentary tracks in every version, and on top of that a foreign language. That's if you really want to save space (because according to what you've written in your suggestion you in fact don't save any space since you're maximizing all eight slots). Or just every English track+commentary+whatever languages there's space left for.

Has anyone else downloaded it from MySpleen? What do I need to do in order to download it?

Ouch.

You may hate the man's films but you gotta feel at least a little sorry for him after that...

That's pretty uncomfortable to watch, I have to admit. I'm not much a public speaker myself, and I have been forced into that a few times so I do get how he must've felt. The thing is, I've learned very quickly that if you're uncomfortable with these kinds of situations the best way to get through them is to improvise as much as you can, and from the very beginning. If you're reading or reciting whatever the hell you've memorized the evening or the hour before you will screw up at some point and when that happens it's highly unlikely you're going to get back on track because you'll be too distressed to be able to collect yourself and think straight. Be familiar with the points you need to hit, embrace the fact that you're feeling awkward and go from there. It doesn't make it fun, but it allows you to fulfill your obligation reasonably well and even not say stupid shit after some practice. Should be enough outside of elections and stuff like that.

Just curious, how many people here have seen the original Solaris?

And how many can compare it to its remake for me?

It's not a remake, it's a different adaptation (it's a pet peeve of mine, because there's a colossal difference between these two things). And it's hardly even "the original" (not the first time the Russians tried adapting Solaris, either).

Go read the novel. It's heavy, cerebral stuff, but it's worth it. Just be sure to avoid the first translation (they translated the French version and the result is supposedly wretched), and look for the recently done second.

Sorry for the ot, but I will use every opportunity to recommend Stanislaw Lem to people.

That scene has bugged me since 1979. (Not to mention being totally freaky.) There has to be a easier way to dispatch Ripley than shove a magazine down her throat. And it sure isn't going to look like an accident, or the Alien. Was this supposed to emphasize Ash's major malfunction?

Pretty much. Either in the commentary or the making of Scott mentions that he was going for freaky and sexual (the magazine bit) with the scene. The malfunctioning android's idea of sexual intercourse, or something to that effect.
