kk650's Regraded Man of Steel V1 (blanket yellow tint removed from blu-ray)
Time

I’ve decided to upload a rerelease of the original V1 regrade of Man of Steel to the same place as usual because I feel that, after comparing different regrade settings, I think it is still my prefered version of Man of Steel overall colourwise. All those interested in knowing where, send me a PM. Here are some screencap comparisons for those interested:

Agreed, this film is a lot better than people give it credit for. The cinematography is great, the music is great like it was with Man of Steel, it takes risks which I appreciate as well and with a little helping hand to the colours and image dynamics, it makes for a very enjoyable film IMHO.

22GB V2 is 1080p BD25 compliant, right?

From the screencaps you can see that the top and bottom bars have been cropped to maximise image quality. If you want to make this release a playable blu-ray, you would need to reintroduce the top and bottom black bar to have the 1920x1080 ratio you need.

Thanks guys, all the kind words are really appreciated! It means a lot.

I love Blade Runner, its among my top films of all time, so I put in extra effort to make this V2 release as good as possible. It took encoding this release 5 times to be 100% happy but the positive feedback I’ve received makes me feel that the extra effort was definately worth it 😃

I don’t know, I’ve got both and the 4k remastered blu-ray in motion looks much more filmlike to my eyes than the WOWOW release.

Sure, there might be some places where the 4k remastered blu-ray is softer than the WOWOW release but I’m sure there are places where the WOWOW release is softer than the 4k remastered blu-ray. In terms of how the two transfers feel when you’re watching them in motion, its night and day, the 4k remastered blu-ray feels like film while the WOWOW feels digital.

I personally dislike the colours of the WOWOW release as well, in particular the fleshtones, but of course everybody will have their own preference about that. I think warmer colours work better for this film.

In terms of which version to use as the source for a release between the WOWOW and 4k remastered blu-ray, regardless of what colour choices you plan to make, I think its a nobrainer, it has to be 4k remastered blu-ray, in motion it just looks more like film.

The picture is super sharp, what is the audio track is it master audio?, you didn’t mention any of audio tracks on your releases

btw are you doing Aliens special edition V2?

There is a place where the mediainfo of all the releases is listed. There you can see the video bitrate, type of sudio track, number of audio channels etc. If anybody wants to know where that is, send me a PM.

I will be doing an Aliens Special Edition V2 at some point but The Last Jedi is coming up so my focus will be on Star Wars releases for the next few weeks.

To me, the DrDre version more closely recreates the cinematic feeling and the kk650 is more adjusted including the extremely unneeded DNR. I really hate DNR and heavily prefer film grain all the time.

No DNR was added to my release. The main source of my regrade was the 4k remastered blu-ray of Raiders of the Lost Ark, the highest quality official release out there. The WOWOW hd transport stream doesn’t really compare IMHO, the 4k release looks like film while the WOWOW release looks very artificial/digital. The situation is very similar to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Mondo 4k remastered release that looks far more filmic and beautiful to me compared to the very digital looking Mondo release.

As for DrDre’s Raiders of the Lost Ark release, as far as i’m aware that doesn’t exist yet, all i’ve seen are screencaps for a potential future release here on originaltrilogy.com

Hey KK650, just checked out Raiders Regraded. I loved it. I was wondering have you given thought to do a regrade treatment to Temple and Crusade??? It would be cool to see. Can’t wait for your other regrades.

Very glad to hear that 😃

I have given thought to taking on Temple and Crusade. I don’t think the difference would be as dramatic as with Raiders of the Lost Ark but from the screencaps i’ve seen, the margin for improvement is definately enough to make it worthwhile IMHO.

Dude not meaning to criticize but in your spider man homecoming regrade you made the walls look purple. Same with this things that shouldn’t look purple look purple.

Thanks for the feedback. Spiderman: Homecoming is fine, what I have found from my experience regrading is that films that were shot on digital always have a colder/flatter feel than those shot on film when all the blanket tint is removed. I think this has something to do with the way digital cameras capture colours compared to actual film stock, where the colour/image dynamic tends to feel warmer and more contrasty. That’s why I much prefer working on films that have been shot on actual film because of that warmer/more contrasty asthetic that they have, not to mention all that natural organic film grain that I love 😃

I have been taking another look at the Man of Steel blu-ray and do have to agree that this V2 regrade feels colder than I would like. I’m very pleased with V1 and I can see why I left a lot more of the yellow in. I’m actually think there could be a blanket green tint instead of a blanket yellow tint on the blu-ray. I’m encoding a new ‘gold edition’ of Man of Steel where I have taken this different approach of removing the blanket green tint, then everybody will be able to choose which of the three versions they prefer, V1, V2 or the ‘gold edition’.

these will only be in 9GB release only right?

If you’re refering to the Gold Edition, I decided to scrap that release. I explain why in the post above. If you’re refering to V2, for now yes. That can change of course if the V2 release becomes more popular than it currently is right now. V1 of course already has a 22gb release on Myspleen.

Suggestion please… When time comes for the “Gold” edition, can you please post screen shots comparisons of all of the available versions together so that each person can decide for themselves?

Regardless, as always, I want to personally thank you for making moving more enjoyable.

The Gold Edition has been scrapped because after jumping to different scenes throughout the film, I felt that it was making Man of Steel look too much like 300 with its golden filter. It works in 300 because it is set in the distant past but doesn’t work as well in contemporary times IMHO. It also creates a colour continuety issue with my regraded releases of Batman V Superman and Wonder Woman, where I removed the blanket yellow tints on their respective blu-rays. The original release and V2 are the ones I will be sticking with.

If you want to see the difference between V1 and V2, you can see V1 screencaps taken from the same shots here(taken from the kk650 miscellaneous regraded films thread):

kk650's Regraded Baywatch (2017) (blanket yellow tint removed from blu-ray) (Released)
Time

Those blu-ray screencaps in the comparisons are actually not 100% accurate colourwise, there is a blanket yellow tint on the blu-ray but its not that strong. For a few of my latest regrades for new films, because I was juggling so many releases at the same time, I tried a shortcut of reversing my regrade settings on the finished regrade to get the blu-ray screencaps, allowing me to delete blu-rays immediately after finishing encodes and freeing up harddisk space for more encodes.

I thought that they would look the same as the blu-ray but Andrea let me know via PM a few days back that that is actually not the case, it makes the blanket tint look worse for some reason. You can go check out the screencaps for the Baywatch blu-ray on blu-ray.com if you want a more accurate idea of the colours. The regraded screencaps in the comparisons are 100% accurate though.

Needless to say, I’ll be taking screencaps directly from the blu-rays from now on.

kk650's Regraded Wonder Woman (blanket yellow tint removed from blu-ray) (Released)
Time

Pretty much on the same page as Ccooluke here.

That said, I have no problem letting you guys know how I choose which releases to regrade, its pretty much a combination of three factors, how popular a film was theatrically, how much I think regrading a film benefits its colours/image dynamics and of course how much I personally liked the film.

In terms of selecting which releases to create higher bitrate releases of based on imdb scores or my personal preferences, if I did that I would feel like I was being kinda snobbish and forcing my own preferences or the preferences of imdb voters onto everybody and that’s not something I want to do.

The 11gb Transformers The Last Knight regrade I did seems to be the most popular release right now in terms of number of seeds but if I was prioritising what releases get lrger versions using imdb ratings it would never have got a release larger than 3gb, yet the larger release is clearly very popular. I think using the torrent statistics to judge which releases get larger versions is the right way to go.

After tehparadox went down and all the file host links to my regrades went down with it, continuing to use file hosts was no longer an option. I will be uploading my releases only to torrents from now on and I won’t be changing my mind on that.

Be patient and give it time, I also want to be able to share my work on recent films in as high quality as possible, but the conditions have to be right and they aren’t yet.

Not being dissentive here but I question how useful 2gb and also 9gb torrents of your regrades to gauge interest in 22gb versions is. Most fans ignore lower bit uploads and the effort to seed them which muddles the results. They then become bored waiting for the ultra quality encodes since all these films have been watchable for weeks or months in various forms already.

If you check the statistics of the torrents, you’ll actually see that the vast majority of downloads are for the 2gb releases, so actually more fans are ignoring the larger 9gb releases than vise versa. The smaller 2gb releases are much more popular than the 9gb releases, that is an undeniable fact.

Watching the seed/peer/number of downloads stats of the 2gb and 9gb releases is the only way to get a good idea of which releases are more popular and decide which releases should get higher bitrate releases. Its not a perfect system but its the best I can think of.

My advice to you is don’t wait, watch the actual blu-ray when it comes out and then wait patiently for a possible 22-23gb release.
