Starkiller origin point is interesting. The movement of the Death Star was always pretty ambiguous (although I bet the EU explained it in great detail). What if Starkiller has light speed engines?

I don’t want to say “I have a theory” because I don’t think I really believe it, but I’ve speculated that Starkiller stays in one place and can somehow fire it’s laser through hyperspace.

The story of the KOTOR games, or at least aspects of them, might be made canonical then. Cool.

I remember hearing a rumor that KOTOR was getting a rerelease eventually with updated graphics and story tweaks to bring it in line with the new canon. I didn’t put much stock in it at the time, but this has me wondering if it’s true after all.

New 60-second spot with Snoke dialog: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihLNuE3FNn8

And here’s something really interesting. Empire Magazine gives us our first canonical map of the galaxy:

A few observations:
-Starkiller Base is indeed in the Unknown Regions
-Assuming the planets highlighted in red are all in the film, a world we’ve yet to hear anything about called Hosnian Prime will be featured. Could this be where Luke is?
-Jakku is much closer to the core than I think anyone expected
-Rakata Prime is canonical

How will you be watching the saga in preparation for Force Awakens?

TPM is clearly the best of the prequels for me. The story/acting/characterization still suck, but there’re more physical sets/locations to balance out the CGI, Anakin’s not a hateful asshole, and there’s less violation of the OT mythos.

This. TPM had some irritating characters and a lousy script, but apart from the midichlorian exchange (which would be easy enough to retcon away), it doesn’t do any real damage to anything that already existed. The other two really mess up a lot of stuff that was previously established in a way TPM doesn’t.

All of the actual meat of Palpatine’s scheming is in Clones though. That’s where he starts a war by playing both sides, that’s where he starts getting inside Anakin’s head, that’s where he begins consolidating political power. Yes, the events of Sith are more dramatic and depending on your opinion more effectively realized, but it’s all just payoff for stuff that was set up in the previous movie.

I’m honestly kind of surprised by how many people have come into this thread with guns blazing. I wasn’t aware that passions ran this hot when comparing the prequels with each other. I agree with Harmy; the bones of something more compelling than the other two are there, but the pacing is so abysmal that they’re easy to miss. The upswing of that, though, is that whenever I give it another chance and try to watch it I usually get so bored I turn it off before I can get angry at the droid factory and the Yoda fight. So that’s . . . good?

Wasn’t it the plan when they wrote the “there is another” bit that the third film wouldn’t be the end, and that the fourth would be about Luke searching for his sister, but that by the time ROTJ was underway Lucas just wanted to tie everything up because he was sick of Star Wars? That doesn’t change the fact that it’s clunky writing and it doesn’t work terribly well, but I was always under the impression that it was born of real-world pressures.

That’s interesting, I haven’t heard the four hour thing anywhere. If that’s true, they must have shown him a much, much earlier cut, because I remember reading that the picture was locked shortly after they screened it for him. There’s no way they cut an hour and a half in a matter of a few days.

Here’s the clip isolated from all the acapella and J-Lo boobs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgaE4OPKaW8

Jimmy Kimmel is doing a TFA-themed episode tonight. The thing I read yesterday listed the guests as J.J., Daisy, John Boyega and Adam Driver, but I just saw a commercial that said Carrie and Harrison will be there too. I guess we’ll find out at 11:30. I wouldn’t be surprised to see another clip.

AMAs stuff -

new TV spot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBTs9ceCqSc

Our first actual scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jWb9Z2k20M&feature=share

There’s also a painfully lame acapella tribute to John Williams, but it didn’t reveal anything new. Harrison introduces it, though, so maybe watch that bit before turning it off. The scene is obviously the most interesting bit here. It’s cool to see all these shots that have been in most of the trailers and spots the way they’ll actually be cut together in the film. It seems a lot more fun and adventurous this way.

One more weird little thing. A variation of yesterday’s Nien Nunb spot surfaced today with one difference - instead of rolling up the wall of the Falcon’s corridor and then falling back down, he now shoots out some sort of grappling device and catches himself before he hits the ground: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSOrqRr5qWU
If we didn’t know that the movie was already locked, I’d say they were trying to decide which shot to use based on the internet’s reaction.

I came across an article earlier today that doesn’t seem worth tracking down again to link to, but the gist was that we’re going to get bombarded with new spots on Thanksgiving. I have to think there was some hyperbole going on, because the article claimed we’ve only seen about “5%” of the marketing campaign, and since we’ve seen six minutes of footage, that math would suggest that they plan on releasing all but 15 minutes of the film before it’s out. Still, if we’ve been getting a couple new spots every week when nothing’s going on, I think it’s safe to assume we can expect something on that most-TV-watchingest of American holidays. I can’t help but think it’s occurred to them that it would be nice to mark the one-year anniversary of that first teaser by releasing something substantial as well.

I prefer The Motion Picture to TWOK so there you go it’s a subjective thing to a degree but I think there are measurable qualities to the first two Star Wars film that dip afterwards.

Certainly there are, especially when you get to the prequels, but I think the reaction to Jedi tends to get unduly drastic when it’s folded in with them. When you’re looking at the whole thing as a continuous chain, yes, Jedi was where the quality first declined and after that every movie was a step down. But if you take the prequels out of the equation for a second, it stops looking like the sky is falling. The first two movies are great. The third one loses some of that mojo, but it’s able to coast by because we’re all invested in the characters enough from the previous films that we keep watching, and really the movie’s enjoyable enough and it’s got some inspired set pieces. End of part one. Part two: twenty years later, George Lucas makes some more movies and they’re just awful and it’s obvious now that his approach is wrongheaded and he has terrible instincts and he was only ever as good as the people he surrounded himself with and he’s maybe a little nuts. That’s all a bummer, but it’s kind of extraneous. It really only affects part one if you let it, especially because that part two is over by now as well. 1997-2012 were indeed the dark times, and 1983 foreshadowed it, but I think it’s hyperbole to actually say it’s all the same thing.

EDIT: uuuugh I hit “quote” instead of “edit” and made a mess of things. Apologies.

ITS GETTING SMALLER AND SMALLER ALL THE TIME.

What? Did one of the two movies disappear when I wasn’t looking?

Anyway, Jedi is all right by me. Yeah, it’s kind of a letdown, but it’s not an actual terrible movie like Baby Geniuses or something. I don’t need every single entry in a series to be transcendently great to like the series, especially now that more entries are on the way. None of the other Star Trek movies live up to Wrath of Khan, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth watching or impossible to enjoy.

Famous Monsters of Filmland has a TFA cover and an interview with Mark Hamill. Is this our first official look at Luke, or did FM just go rogue and do their own illustration based on how Mark looks in that leaked photo and/or in recent interviews? Part of me thinks it has to be the latter, but then I think Lucasfilm would have shut it down if that were the case.

I now believe his TFA enthusiasm isn’t just about finally getting to die.

I do think someone’s goin’ down though. I kinda think it will be Finn… I only doubt this because killing the only black character would create a ton of harsh headlines. So maybe he won’t die, but be badly wounded.

Back a few months ago when those Episode VIII casting rumors about Gina Rodriguez and Tatiana Maslany hit, weren’t they supposed to have gone in for chemistry reads with Boyega? If that was true, it would seem like an indication that he’s sticking around. I don’t think they’ll kill anyone new, at least on the Resistance side (Hux is going to eat it, though). None of them have been around long enough for it to have enough resonance; they’re all worth more to the story alive for now.
