Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

http://www.standard.co.uk/showbiz/celebrity-news/star-wars-producer-kathleen-kennedy-confirms-that-entire-cast-will-return-for-eighth-film-a3139911.html

Kathleen Kennedy confirmed at the European TFA premiere that “all the cast members you see here tonight” will be back for Episode VIII. Present at the event? Harrison Ford. Now, KK could very well have been bending the truth to avoid spoiling TFA, but if she wasn’t, what do we think this means? Personally, my money is on Kylo having an hallucination of the old man.

Rate 'The Last Jedi' (NO SPOILERS) (was: Rate TFA (NO SPOILERS))
Time

I haven’t seen TFA nearly enough times to integrate it with my overall ranking in any meaningful way, but my early impression is that its across-the-board sense of enthusiasm might give it a slight edge over ROTJ, where everyone but Mark Hamill and Ian McDiarmid seemed to be going through the motions. Again, it’s way too early to make that call, but that’s how I’m feeling right this moment.

I’m going to go ahead and bump this to the front page now that TFA is out of the bag. That film left me confident enough in the series’s trajectory that I’m going to try to avoid devouring leaked info for this one like I did for the last, but since there isn’t really any of that to speak of yet and since TFA ended on such a tease for the next film, I’m getting to be ready for some Episode VIII speculation.

Info Wanted: The best audio, and differences between the many audio tracks available?
Time

I have no answers for you, but rather another related question that I’ve been wondering about for a while. Where do the lossless audio files for the OOT that we have access to come from in the first place? Surely lossless audio wasn’t a home video priority before 1997, and theatrical DTS wasn’t around during the original run.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

I’m on the record as liking the “Burning Homestead” quote already, but I feel like saying a few words in its defense. If it had been any longer than the fifteen seconds or so that it lasted, I wouldn’t have been on board, but that snippet was just the right amount. I thought the soundtrack was pretty light on old themes; there were a couple hits of the Rebel fanfare in the Jakku Millennium Falcon chase, a single bar of the Imperial March when Kylo’s having his moment with Vader’s helmet, some “Princess Leia’s Theme” and “Han Solo and the Princess” after Leia showed up, a little bit of the main theme in “Scherzo for X-Wings”, and half a dozen Force themes sprinkled throughout, and that’s all I can remember. the “Burning Homestead” excerpt was the most intensely visceral, hair-on-the-back-of-your-neck-standing-up OT reference in the whole thing for me, without overstaying its welcome and without actually repeating anything in the narrative. I don’t think it was overdone when it could have been, and it was kind of a big moment for me.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

No idea yet when Luke goes off the grid, but in Aftermath there’s talk of Mon Mothma wanting to demilitarize the New Republic, and at the end of Lost Stars the Imperial Remnant withdraws to the Unknown Regions to regroup and rebuild. Both of those are set decades before The Force Awakens, but they point towards the Resistance being a proxy force and the First Order not yet being well established like a lot of folks here have conjectured. The movie could have done a better job of explaining it, but the nuEU has set it up reasonably well.

Peter only played Chewbacca in the seated parts because of his health problems. The rest of the time he was played by a Finnish actor:

I’m just glad they got Peter in there at all, if I remember correctly he had a double knee replacement a few months before shooting started.

The finished version of 2.0 will almost certainly be out in a few weeks, so the new DVD will be available soon enough. There’s not much point in converting the workprint.

Didn’t realize it was coming so soon, I kind of checked out of this thread after the workprint hit and focused completely on TFA. If that’s the case, I’ll give him the other two and get the proper 2.0 to him later.

Don’t feel like sifting out the relevant quotes, but RE: Leia - she wasn’t given anything to do, but once the decision was made to make Kylo her son, there was no way to not have her there. Hopefully Johnson finds a better way to integrate the character, because unless they kill her off as well, we’re going to have to at least check in with her as Kylo’s arc progresses.

I don’t get why so many people are being so hard on Carrie Fisher. Her performance wasn’t anything special, but it didn’t stick out to me as being particularly bad either. The biggest problem I had with Leia was some clunky dialog, which is much more JJ’s and Larry’s problem than it is Carrie’s (unless she did punch ups for this).

I’m going again tomorrow with my mom and aunt, who she took to the original in '77, and two of my cousins, who came along with my family when I went in '97. I don’t usually get sentimental about this kind of thing, but this is pretty cool. There’s a bunch of stuff I want to look for, but really I’m hoping I can turn off the analytical part of my brain and just enjoy the ride now that I know it’s good.

I’m an enormous fan of Rey’s theme. Kylo’s worked well but there wasn’t much to it. The rest was serviceable. I’m just happy there weren’t huge swaths of score copy-and-pasted from earlier scenes/movies like there were in the prequels. That said, my biggest lump-in-the-throat, goosebumps moment was the note-for-note Force theme arrangement from when Luke finds Owen and Beru dead in Star Wars when Rey pulls the saber out of the snow.

You’re right. Someone who was present for all of the Freighter/Falcon stuff was a major leak.

The shot of Maz handing someone (previously presumed Leia) the lightsaber wasn’t in the film, was it? They used a different shot, and it was Rey. Makes sense as I’m sure they were no where near finished with Maz and needed something that obscured her. Still, why show it during ‘my sister has it’?

I remember some versions of the leaked outline had Maz accompanying Han, Chewie and Finn to the Resistance base. It’s possible she was supposed to give the lightsaber to Leia at some point.

This is more of an in-universe question than an examination of the movie, but I’m seeing it in comments sections on a few different sites that Hosnian Prime was the current seat of the New Republic and that the government moved to a different planet every several years like the Olympics. Where is that info coming from? Was there a line in the movie I didn’t catch? I read all the Journey to TFA books from Force Friday and it wasn’t in any of those. Is it in that Before the Awakening one that came out today?

I think the ANH similarities are just something you’ll either be bothered by or you won’t. I thought Starkiller Base took it a bit too far, but other than that I had no qualms. I think the people throwing around the term “remake” are mischaracterizing it. Many of the beats were the same, but the movie had its own vibe that no one’s going to mistake for Episode IV. Of course, originality wasn’t at the top of my list for what I wanted for this movie, so I may have gone in predisposed to be more accepting than some others. I think the main thing this first film of the Disney era needed to do was to get the tone back on track, and I think it did that wonderfully. I’ll be disappointed if further entries play it this safe, but as far as TFA is concerned, I’m just happy and relieved that Star Wars feels like Star Wars again.

Also, this is neither here nor there, but I got serious chills when Rey pulled the Skywalker saber out of the snow and the Force theme kicked in with that exact arrangement from the burning homestead scene.
